Marinello Schools Beauty Scholarship Winner Helps Others Instead

Posted on: September 29th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-school-marinello-scholarship-winnerJessica Wylie, 18, the first-place winner of the second annual Marinello Raw Talent High School Scholarship contest, wants to use her $10,000 scholarship to help abused women feel “loved, important and beautiful.”  Her remarkable story has since been published in Redding’s own Record Searchlight.

“I have been living with and mentoring girls who have been abused or victimized in some way throughout their entire lives,” Wylie wrote in her winning essay titled Beauty from Ashes. “One of the many ways they have inspired me is by giving me the dream to help their outer beauty match their inner beauty.”

Wylie, who recently started classes at the Marinello Schools of Beauty’s Redding, Calif. campus, wrote in her essay of her desire to start a program on campus where abused women could get their hair, make-up and nails done by Marinello students for free. In addition to helping the women feel better about themselves, Wylie hopes that such a program would allow her fellow students to “leave with a sense of fulfillment such as I have experienced just by being around the girls I have mentored.”

“Jessica Wylie is the kind of student we want the Marinello Raw Talent Scholarship program to benefit,” says Dr. Rashed Elyas, CEO of Marinello Schools of Beauty. “Her personal ambition goes beyond herself to consider the impact her work can have on other people. Marinello Schools of Beauty is proud to have her as a student.”

“It is my time to give back and make a difference in the lives of others,” Wylie wrote.

The exclusive Raw Talent High School Scholarship program allows students to express their desires for a rewarding career in the Beauty Industry, offering $30,000 between five fortunate seniors each year. Scholarship candidates were required to submit an essay describing how they plan to make a difference as a professional in the Beauty Industry. Upon review, selected finalists from each category of Cosmetology and Esthetics are then challenged to showcase their creativity and talent for the skills portion of the competition. In addition to the $10,000 scholarship awarded Wylie, Marinello Schools of Beauty handed out four scholarships of $5,000 each.

Top Five, Never-To-Do Facial Hair Trends Of All Time

Posted on: September 28th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

There’s a lot of controversy when it comes to a man and his facial hair. Most of the time the fashionable trend for men is to sport that clean shaven mug and avoid crossing that very thin line of actually achieving good-looking, fashionable facial hair. Recently, in Hollywood anyways, the woolly look is the hot new trend. Many famous celebrity male actors like Robert Downey Jr., Brad Pitt and George Clooney have turned in their pure, pretty boy faces for that newly in Sasquatch look. Whether the beard is making a comeback or not, there are certain facial hair don’ts that one should never fall victim to.

Here is a list of the 5 worst facial hair trends of all time. If you catch yourself either having one of these or possessing one of these, here’s a little advice for you – DON’T!

*Note: This list is not in any particular order.

5.  Soul Patch
The soul patch is a little cluster of facial hair that resides directly under a man’s lower lip. It acts a parasite as it leeches to the lip refusing to ever let go. The soul patch looks as if it is the soul survivor of a once prominent and possibly respectable beard. Hmm, maybe that’s where it got its name. It’s as if the owner once had a full beard, but during the shaving process simply forgot about the little blip under his chin. At one time, this patch de soul was worn by early jazz trumpet players, as it was a nice cushion for the trumpet to rest on as they tooted their horns. Now, it has simply become a fashion trend and an unfortunate one at that. Soul patch? More like a convenient soup catcher. Hey, look there, it still does serve a purpose.

4. The Handle Bar Mustache
Where to begin with this one? There are so many wrong things about this awful piece of face-wear that there isn’t really a good starting point. How the concept of growing out your mustache to unwieldy lengths ever became a fashion staple is the main question at hand. If you have to use similar wax-like products on your facial hair as you do on your actual hairdo then that should be a giant red sign saying STOP. However, there is one person who has rocked the handle bar mustache for decades without a drop in popularity. Who? None other than the chubby mushroom-munching, high-jumping, princess-saving plumber himself – Mario! But hey, if you want to fashion your style after a video game character then go right ahead. I’m sure someone out there will think you look good? Then again, probably not.

3. Civil War Chops
What seemed like a status statement during the time, Civil War chops were huge among officers and soldiers during the war between the states. On par with the ridiculousness of old English wigs during the colonel times, the Civil War chops were reminiscent of a great mountaineer beard that had somehow lost its pants. Everything was there – the mustache, the sideburn attachment, the thick, desired length, but there was just one crucial part missing – the entire bottom half. As a result, its place in history can be seen more as an offspring to the mustache than the beard. The Civil War chop was like seeing a gorilla shaved from the waist down – pretty strange and very disturbing. Regardless of how this awfully incredible style came into play, we can at least rest assured that it has lost its popularity throughout the times.

2. The Neck Beard
The neck beard isn’t necessarily an attempt at facial hair fashion; rather, it’s the laziness of the wearer or the complete unawareness that your beard shouldn’t leave you looking like a Chewbacca impersonator. A well-kept beard should embrace the neckline, never exceed it. Let’s put it this way. If your neck beard connects to your chest hair then, Houston, we have a problem. There is no clearance for takeoff here, just horrible beard-wearing fashion.

1.  The Mustache
The most controversial form of facial hair expression lies within the confines of the simple mustache. The mustache has been a part of worldly culture for centuries. The beloved flavor savor has seen many variations throughout its long standing years with a couple making this very list. The lip warmer has never seemed to find a proper place in fashion, mainly because of its principle. The idea of shaving your entire face but leaving a thin strip of hair above the lip has never been very settling. When accompanied by a surrounding beard, the moustache can be presentable, but left on its own, it stands no chance of fashion survival. Unless your name is Tom Sellock, you can kiss any hope of successfully pulling off the mustache a long and sweet goodbye.

10 Tips for Maintaining Beautiful Skin Beyond Summer

Posted on: September 21st, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-schools-directory-fall-beauty-tipsAlthough fall brings beautiful weather, vibrant colors and a sense of coziness, it also brings the winter cold and dryness which can stimulate destruction to your beautiful summer skin. Luckily, there are ways to combat the cold and rid your skin of the seemingly inevitable dryness. Here is a list of 10 tips for maintaining beautiful skin beyond summer and long into the harsh winter.

#10 – Don’t let your sunscreen go into hibernation.

It might be below freezing outside, but that doesn’t mean that the sun’s harmful UV rays aren’t hard at work on your skin. Don’t pack up that sunscreen for next summer. Keep it handy this winter. Before going outside apply some moisturizing, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to all exposed areas of your body. That should help keep the sun at bay and your skin healthy.

#9 – Meet your new best friend this winter: Lip protection
Your lips are like sitting ducks on your face. The cold unleashes its worst upon your lips and because they contain no oil glands, they lose moisture and begin to chap and crack. The good news is there are things you can do to treat this. Staying hydrated, breathing through your nose (as much as possible) and wearing lip protection – balms, waxes and gloss are all effective ways of maintaining healthy, happy lips.

#8 – Crank that thermostat…down?
You know that your first impulse when it’s cold outside is to jack your thermostat up to get warm, right? Well, central heat can add to a dry house and even drier skin. This winter, set the thermostat at a cool yet comfy 68 – 72 degrees. The cooler the air – the healthier the skin. Just don’t make it freezing. You still want to be able to have control over all your limbs and fingers.

#7 – A hot shower is your enemy.
During the winter we all love hot showers. No matter how cold your house is, a hot shower can give you the warmth you’re looking for. Trouble is, hot water further adds to the drying effect of your skin by stripping it of its natural oils. Instead, try to take lukewarm showers. They’ll give you the clean feeling you need with the luxury of keeping your skin relatively moisturized.

#6 – Go ahead, drop that bar soap.
Regular bar soaps contain irritating ingredients and fragrances that can leave residue on the skin causing further dryness. Try washing with fragrance-free bottle soap and using less of it.

#5 – Shed those wet clothes quickly.
This may seem like a logical proposition, but if you’re clothes are wet – pants, shirt, gloves, socks, etc. – make sure you’re out of them quickly. Wet clothing can cause the skin great irritation, not to mention potential hypothermia.

#4 – It’s all in the diet and hydration.
Eating and drinking right during the winter can help your skin hold its moisture. Consuming foods abundant in oils and fatty acids are great and drinking plenty of fluids will also significantly help. However, don’t get the word fluids confused with your favorite guilty pleasure drinks like coffee, soda or alcohol. These three liquids may be your drink of choice, but consuming them in mass quantities during the winter will only dry out your skin if not consumed with proportionate amounts of water.

#3 – You wash your hands then you moisturize. Wash your hands then moisturize.
Probably the most basic fundamental in maintaining healthy, moisturized skin. After you bathe or wash your hands, you want to ensure that the water is sealed in the skin – moisturize. Make sure you are using the right type of moisturizer as well. Creams or ointments are better in the winter, whereas lotions are more suited for warmer, humid climates. Also, during the winter your hands take an incredibly harsh beating from the climate. It’s like they’re in a tussle with a prime Muhammad Ali, and that’s not good for anyone. Make sure you use proper moisturizing techniques for them as well.

#2 – Humidify
Running a humidifier in your home, especially at night while you’re asleep, will help moisturize the dry winter air and keep your skin smooth and hydrated.

#1 – Adapt your facial cleansing routine.
Having dry skin is irritating, uncomfortable, itchy and sometimes flat-out painful, especially when what’s dry is your face. That’s why during the winter months you should choose cream-based cleansers and sparingly apply toners and astringents, as many contain alcohol which further dries the skin.

Cosmetology Students Anticipate New Fall Hair Trends

Posted on: September 9th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

EATON TB 01.JPG
Fall is approaching which means two things – new fashion trends and new hair trends. Snagging ideas from TV, magazines and of course, our hairstylists, we set out for a new hairstyle to celebrate a new season. Enrolled in cosmetology school during the fall season is especially stimulating for cosmetology students, who look forward to the changing season and predicting (not to mention learning!) the upcoming trends.

“There is a lot going on this year that differs from previous years as far as hairstyles go,” said Tom Poloncic, owner of Black Hills Beauty College, a leading South Dakota cosmetology school. “We train our students to accommodate the changing trends and remain up-to-date with the hottest looks. Our students become so excited when it is time to learn new trends.”

And what are the upcoming styles we can anticipate for?

1. The Ponytail – Always a top hairstyle, the ponytail never goes away, rather it keeps changing year after year. This year ponies will be paired with bright colored headbands and messy bangs.

2. Bob – The bob made an entrance last year and continues to dominate in popularity.

3. Rich Solids – Highlights are fun to add a little excitement to your locks, but this year’s radical blonde tones go to the warm side. Deep reds and chocolate brown steaks will pump up your prestige. Nothing says look at me like Earthy hues at their finest.

4. Waves – If a short bob is not your style, then long layered waves are for you. They’re becoming the new sophisticated chic.

5. Layers – Look for short layers and long layers to frame the face accompanied with bangs. “This year we are seeing a lot of requests for solid, warm colors close to a chocolate brown color. We are also seeing a lot of fun happening with layers and different versions of the bob, both of which are classic hair trends but always change year to year,” Poloncic said. The South Dakota cosmetology school owner explains that people are turning back to natural color tones in hopes to achieve a more classic, down-to-earth look.

7 Styling Activities to Avoid on Your Hair

Posted on: September 2nd, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-schools-activities-to-avoid-on-your-hairHighlights. Lowlights.  Blow-drying.  High-heat straighteners.   Bleaching. Chemical treatments. Metal bobby pins.  Let’s face it.  We’re not very kind to our hair, and yet each day we expect it to look perfect and give us the good hair day we want oh-so-badly.

As many hairstylists will tell you, sometimes less really is more when wanting to get healthy, better looking tresses.  Isn’t it odd that all that we do to our hair to make it beautiful often makes it just the opposite?

Since many of us may not be scientists or cosmetologists, let’s start with the basics.  Hair is fiber made up of three layers: the medulla, the cortex and then the outer cuticle.  Hair grows at an average of 1/4 an inch every month.  People have different natural hair life cycles—some may have a hair life cycle of up to six years, others may have a two year hair cycle.  However, the life cycle of your hair depends a lot on its health, too.

Over-styling, especially heat-styling can really wreak havoc on your hair’s cuticle, causing your hair to become dry, damaged, and lacking shine and luster.  What part of your beauty routine is damaging your hair?  Probably a lot of things you do regularly.  To keep your hair healthy, try to avoid or limit these activities:

  1. Bleaching
  2. Perming
  3. Highlights and colors
  4. Using a flat iron
  5. Blow-drying
  6. Wearing tight ponytails and braids
  7. Extensions

We understand you can’t just give up styling your hair every day.  So, besides limiting the use of these styling products and routines, here are a three healthy hair tips from hairstylists:

•    Use a product made for heat styling.  Luckily there are now products that help protect hair from the high temperatures of the curling iron and straightener—use it every time you heat-style your hair!
•    Eat healthy foods and drink water! Crazy diets aren’t going to boost your hair health.  Eat a balanced diet of lean proteins, fruits, veggies, whole grains and yes, some healthy fats!
•    Know when to cut your hair.  Sure, you may want to grow out your hair, but you have to know when it’s best just to trim off the unhealthy ends.  Trimming your hair when it needs it will help it grow.

Here’s to your hair’s health!
