Top Movie Stars Who Have Played Barbers in Hollywood’s Blockbusters

Posted on: June 1st, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

Ever thought about your favorite actor or actress to play the role of a barber or hair stylist in a Hollywood Blockbuster? Chances are you probably haven’t. So that’s why we’ve already thought about them for you. Some are funny, some are creepy and some have played the role on more than one occasion – really? Yep. Check out this list comprising several of Hollywood’s best…and maybe worst barbers and hair stylists to grace or disgrace the screen.

barbers

The Zohan (2008)
Adam Sandler stars as Zohan, an Israeli Special Forces Soldier who fakes his death? Why – so he can reemerge in New York City as a sexually revved hair stylist saving the world. Not your everyday plot but hey, that’s okay. Along the way you’ll laugh as Sandler struts around kicking you know what and taking names in cut off short shorts, a sleeveless t-shirt and a feathered hairdo that makes Fabio look like just got arrested by the fashion police.

barbers-2

Edward Scissor Hands (1990)
This cult hit helped spark the dynamic duo of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, as it pit Depp into the role of his career (next to Jack Sparrow) – an artificial man named Edward, who literally has scissors for hands. Although this movie is as weird as it is funny and heart-felt, it lands on our list because after Edward is taken in by a suburban family, he learns that maybe his scissor hands aren’t the worst thing after all. In fact, he starts putting them to use and becomes the most popular kid on the block – sculpting shrubbery and, yep you got it, cutting hair for the neighborhood’s house wives.

barbers-3

Barbershop (2002)
Although Barbershop has a well-known cast (Ice Cube, Eve… well, just read the movie poster below), none of the barbers stick out as much as Eddie (Cedrick the Entertainer). Why? Because the movie is obviously about a barber shop (couldn’t have guessed that right?) but throughout the whole movie he never so much cuts a single piece of hair. He plays a 60-plus-year-old barber who has paid his dues and doesn’t feel the need to cut, snip or shave any more hair in his lifetime. Did we mention that he’s constantly causing the majority of the laughs, too?

barbers-4

Coming to America (1988)
A classic comedy starring Eddie Murphy in several comedic roles including one scene where he plays two roles simultaneously – one as a scamming barber and one as Akim (the protagonist) as he seemingly gives himself a haircut. It’s a funny scene and Murphy really tries to encapsulate the over-the-top antics that would ensue at a local barber shop in New York City.

barbers-5

Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
Well, Johnny Depp makes his second appearance on this list as he personifies the infamous barber/murderer, Sweeny Todd. Depp must just love incorporating sharp hair cutting utensils on set or maybe he’s contemplating opening his own barber shop on the side to go with his acting career. Anyways, Sweeny Todd finds itself in a paradox of cheery musical numbers contrasted by the gruesome plotline of this age old urban tale. Regardless, Depp plays a demon barber and hence he lands on the list…again.

barbers-6

The Barber (2001)
Following closely in the same sadistic sense of Sweeny Todd, Malcolm McDowell, like Depp, plays the role of a local barber and serial killer. Set in Alaska, the movie brings forth the concept of psychological darkness as it shows the interaction and relation between the mind of a psychopath and those of ordinary people.

What’s your favorite blockbuster barber movies?

Paul Mitchell Schools Donate $106,250 to No Limits

Posted on: May 18th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

At their biannual owners Summit on May 1 in Newport Beach, CA, the nationwide network of Paul Mitchell cosmetology schools raised $106,250 for No Limits, the country’s only theater group for deaf and hard-of-hearing children. They raised the money in one day, through a silent auction in which numerous school owners and educators donated a day (or more) of education, and renowned artist Vladimir Prodanovich donated a painting valued at over $7,000.

Appearing at the Summit on behalf of No Limits, deaf comedian and motivational speaker Kathy Buckley showed a clip from the wildly popular TV show Glee, in which deaf singer and No Limits alumnus John Autry II performs a solo of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” In the program, his classmates accompany him through sign language, and the Glee choir joins in for a memorable performance between both schools.

As the clip ended, the real-life John Autry joined Kathy on stage and performed the song again, to the delight and surprise of the assembled Paul Mitchell school owners.

John is the reason we have No Limits today,” Kathy explained. At the age of seven, John began working with Michelle Christie-Adams, a highly qualified teacher dedicated to bringing speech to deaf and hearing-impaired children. When she discovered how much John loved music and performing, Michelle started the No Limits theater group especially for him.

Since then, the children of No Limits have performed in more than 60 productions in over 10 states, reaching an audience of over 30,000 people. No Limits has been featured in the New York Times, Newsday, Oprah, and other media outlets. Michelle has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the Top 100 Heroes award from Volvo for Life and the George Washington Medal of Honor from the Freedom Foundation.

Easter and Other Holiday Hairstyles Gone Wrong

Posted on: April 6th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

With the holidays just around the corner, it’s important that you look your best. Whether you’re going to a party – looking to make an impression or opting for the more casual experience, one thing is for certain – you don’t want your holiday hair to resemble the holiday you’re celebrating – or do you? So without any delay, here is a list of holiday hairstyles not to rock during your happy holidays!

holiday-hairstyles-easter

Easter Hairstyles

Easter is great and all but talk about taking your love for bunnies to the extreme – WOW! Granted this woman is part of an animal hair fashion show (yes, there were in fact other women with animal woven locks), but it doesn’t stray far from the fact that you should never attempt this rabbit inspired ‘do on your own free time.

holiday-hairstyles-fourth-of-july

Fourth of July Hairstyles

Lady Liberty is a beautiful sight to behold, whether you live in New York or are simply visiting. It’s especially breathtaking on our nation’s day of Independence – a beautiful scene of freedom. However, what’s not so beautiful is a real-life Statue of Liberty hair impersonator. That’s not freeing, it’s just embarrassing.

holiday-hairstyles-halloween

Halloween Hairstyles

Unless you want to look like a gruesomely vengeful, little girl out to kill everyone and everything – or Cousin It from The Adams Family, then it’s strongly encouraged to avoid the whole hair covering your entire face look. We’ll just say it like it is – straight up creepy!

holiday-hairstyles-thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Hairstyles

Since Thanksgiving is the closest holiday, we’ll kick off the list with this Turkey hungry festivity. On a day where overeating is celebrated as a national holiday, one thing you don’t want to do is look like any of the food items or décor associated with it. The turkey may be an essential icon for Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t mean you should recreate it as a hairstyle.

holiday-hairstyles-christmas

Christmas Hairstyles

The most popular season of the year – a time of joy, cheer, crowded parking lots and millions of people teetering on the edge of breaking. Christmas is a time of celebration with friends and family, so the last thing you want to do is look like the big man in red himself. Word of advice: if you’re an older man with a white beard, you might consider shaving – at least until the season is over.

holiday-hairstyles-new-years

New Year’s Hairstyles

Because New Years doesn’t officially have any associated icons or symbols, there isn’t really any specific hairstyle to avoid. Just make sure you don’t look ridiculous. Like…well, this lady – taking the midnight kiss to a whole new level.

holiday-hairstyles-st-patricks-day

Saint Patrick’s Day Hairstyles

The holiday that encourages drinking and wearing green is a happily celebrated holiday, typically featuring large parades of green masses. It’s a fun time for everyone to show off the little bit of Irish in them. But, one thing you don’t want to do – other than not wear green because pinching hurts – is base your hairstyle on St. Paddy’s little green-plaided mascot – the leprechaun. That’s right; there isn’t anything cool or sexy about looking like a ridiculous-bearded leprechaun.

North Carolina Cosmetology State Board Under Inspection

Posted on: March 30th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

north-carolina-state-board-of-cosmetology1Cosmetology state boards are being evaluated, which could result in big changes for the cosmetology industry. The Food and Drug Administration is limited when it comes to regulating certain cosmetics. Often time state boards will aid in inspecting these products, making sure they are following safety guidelines, but now certain state boards are being inspected as well including North Carolina State Board of Cosmetology. The NC State Board licenses roughly 85,000 cosmetologists and beauty experts throughout its 78 years of operation. But currently, North Carolina is under review.

With licensing, styling and salon fees being high, especially during these currently times of a recession, some supervisors feel getting rid of these fees would bring a sigh of relieve for the beauty industry. If this were to happen, the Cosmetology Board’s services will not be as needed, which would bring a restricting or elimination of the state board all together. The board’s mission is to protect the public from using unsafe beauty products. Some fear that North Carolina could become a less quality environment if safety checks were no longer in place. If licensing was no longer required for cosmetologists to practice, this could potentially result in more harm than good, especially when it comes to sanitary regulations!
