Coffee lovers rejoice!

February 6th, 2008 by Shana

There’s another reason to fly by Starbuck’s (as though deliciousness wasn’t
enough….) - caffeine is good for your skin!

Caffeines’ s ability to restrict blood vessels makes it a key ingredient in topical products that estheticians use to help with rosacea and facial flushing. Technically, drinking the caffeine doesn’t have quite the same effect, but I figure I spill enough coffee on myself that I should have Halle Barry’s complextion soon enough!

Making the world a prettier place

The best thing about running a site that helps people find a cosmetology school is helping people make their dreams a reality. By helping people go to school, we’re giving people a road to a new life, but it’s up to them to take it.

Imagine how thrilled we were to learn about Kiva.org. This website works with microlending organizations in poor nations to help people who normally couldn’t apply for credit get loans to start or expand their businesses. The loans give them an opportunity to improve their lives, but rely on the hardwork of the entrepreneurs to make it a reality.

We feel that they are kindred spirits, so we’re pitching in to help. We’ve found some entrepreneurs who are working on their own beauty businesses and helped fund their efforts. Check out all our sponsored businesses. Or lend to your own.

The best part of the site is that it isn’t charity, it’s a loan. That means that the person will pay it back, and we can then loan it to another person!

Tanning a Tattoo

January 28th, 2008 by Shana

As a kid, I’d drawn on myself with sunscreen so that after a day outside, I’d have white stars and hearts in the middle of my bright red sunburn. I might have been onto something more than melanoma.

Taiwanese designer Yu-Chiao Wang created a robe that allows sun (or, better yet, sunless tanning spray) to get through in a pattern, resulting in a temporary, full-body design. It’d definately be a unique addition to an open back dress.

Forty and Fabulous

As most of us do, I went home for the holidays to visit my family. I was lucky enough to have my 19 year old step-daughter Jordan with me. While home we were looking at some old photos my mother has hanging on her paneled wall.

Jordan was like, “Is that you?”

“Yes dear, that’s me.”

And then it hit me, my hair still looks exactly the same as it did 22 years ago when I graduated from high school. Of course, I color lovely grey, in addition to the mousy brown; with the help of Garnier #80. I had to break-up with my stylist, whom I loved, since it cost me a weeks worth of daycare just to get my hair dyed.

In high school my love affair was with the product Sun In. I would actually spray this stuff on my roots when they grew out and sleep in it. Yes, you read it right, sleep in it … and my hair didn’t fall out. Maybe we should name it Moon In! Did you know that they still make that stuff? I checked.

So, this goes out to all the 40-something women out there who are subconsciously trying to hold onto their youth. If you’ve found a way to update your look, without looking frumpy and forty, but forty and fabulous please let me know. Or if there is a stylist in KC who wants to do a make-over and be on this site, let me know. I’m game!
