How To Get Clearer Skin

Posted on: December 14th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-schools-clear-skinWe’re all guilty of doing it.  Late night studying, girls’ nights out and even a long stressful day at work can all cause us to blow off washing our face to opt for passing out in bed instead.  Sometimes when we can hardly keep our eyes open, we don’t prioritize washing our face before bed.  But how essential is this nightly ritual? Can’t your skin wait a few hours until morning?

Well, if you want to avoid pimples, getting sick, looking older than you are and dull skin tone, you better march yourself to your bathroom sink each night.

Laurie Polis, MD, of WebMD magazine explains that night is a time of replenishment for your skin.  Polis says at night there’s an increased amount of blood flow to your skin and many metabolic processes going on.  Polis says you should consider all the gross stuff that has settled on your face throughout the day—makeup, bacteria, sweat, pollution, dirt—just to name a few. It’s extremely important for your skin’s health to wash off the environmental debris of the day and give it a rest from possible irritants.

It may seem commonsense, but washing your face is the best way to keep you skin fresh, clear and glowing.  By not washing your face each night you can increase your chances of acne.  During the night, the skin produces oil.  If your face is covered with dirt, grime and makeup, there’s no way for the oil to escape which causes clogged pores.  Also, nighttime is important for your skin’s rejuvenation.  Skin needs time to breathe and soak in moisturizer and anti-aging products for it to look bright and youthful.

If you want to stay healthy you should be motivated to wash you face every night.  With a day of sweat and grime on your face, your skin is playing host to a plethora of bacteria waiting to make its move at night.   Wash your face can get rid of potential cold or flu germs.  Also, leaving on makeup can cause major damage and infection to your eyes.  All the eye shadow and sparkly eyeliner you forget to wash off will move into your eye at night creating a perfect storm for irritations and infections such as pink eye.

So, no matter how exhausted you are at night, remember how important it is to take an extra five minutes to wash your face. A great way to guarantee you’ll at least do something, is to invest in a box of face wipes, which although not ideal, is better than nothing.   You’ll be happy you avoided pimples and pink eye, and your 15-years-from-now -self will thank you for the youthful looking skin!  If you are really excited about skin, consider a career as an esthetician. Soak-off Gel Polish, the No Chip Polish That Lasts

Posted on: November 30th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 3 Comments

nail-school-soak-off-gel-polishNo chipped nail polish for two whole weeks? Sign me up! That’s the claim that soak-off gel polish is making.  Soak-off gel polish is becoming the hot trend in nail salons everywhere—but how much do you know about it?

Soak-off gel polish is painted on with a brush by a nail technician who has graduated from nail technology school. Each layer of nail polish is then hardened by UV light.  The UV light dries the nail polish in minutes.   Soak-off gel polish comes in wide range of colors and can be mixed to create new colors.  This technique must be done in a salon by a nail technician and is supposed to last two to three weeks with no chipping.

Positives of soak-off gel polish:
•    Quick dry time –UV light will dry polish in minutes!
•    Long-lasting—no chips for weeks
•    Little damage to your nail—doesn’t use files or drills
•    You can layer polish—if you’re tired of the color, simply paint over it!

Drawbacks of soak-off gel polish:
•    Cost—more expensive than a traditional manicure, but you do have to factor in how long it lasts!
•    Nail growth shows—because the polish lasts so long eventually your nail growth will poke through
•    Time—getting this done will take longer than a traditional manicure.

If you’re tired of repainting your nails every few days, you should give soak-off gel polish a shot.  While it does require a little more time and money, it should save you some time and money by lasting for two to three weeks.

Brands that make soak-off gel polish include Akzentz, Bio Sculpture Color Gel, CalGel, Dashing Diva Gelife, IBD, and OPI Axxium.

Have any of you tried out this new nail polish trend?  Leave a comment below.  Let us know what you think!

Part 2: More Odd Celebrity Beauty Routines (including Sandra Bullock’s beauty tip for hemorrhoid cream)

Posted on: November 25th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

beauty-schools-odd-beauty-secretsReaders loved our list of Odd Celebrity Beauty Routines (including one to get rid of cellulite) so much; we decided to do it again with more bizarre secrets celebrities do behind closed doors to maintain their glam status.

Brush those choppers and… your face? Wait, what?
So you’ve probably heard the slogan, “You don’t have to brush all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep?” Well, Jennifer Love Hewitt has taken that saying to a whole new level. Allegedly, JLH uses toothpaste to dry up pimples.

Surprisingly, this old beauty method isn’t really a surprise at all. Certain models, celebrities and high school classmates have tried this old wives’ remedy. Although, there’s no scientific reasoning to support the tooth paste claim, it does seem to work to an extent. Something about the ingredients in the toothpaste: baking soda, enzymes and zinc chloride among others can help calm the skin, alleviating irritation.

So the next time you’re checking yourself out in the mirror while brushing your teeth at night, don’t be ashamed if you feel like dabbing a little cavity fighter paste onto that unsightly zit.

Giving a whole new meaning to the insult of “butt face!”
We all know the use behind (pun definitely intended) hemorrhoid cream. But, have you ever heard of its other use?

Apparently Sandra Bullock, during her filming of Miss Congeniality 2, learned that hemorrhoid cream can help reduce wrinkles and puffiness if applied under the eyes. It makes sense when you think about hemorrhoid cream’s traditional use. The active ingredients in the cream help to temporarily tighten the skin under the eye in the areas applied. The result is a reduction in puffiness and a decrease in the appearance of wrinkles – those unwanted age tellers.

You cook with it, you pop popcorn with it and you can soften and you can also smooth your hands with it. And no, it’s not a microwave…
It’s olive oil – a very versatile cooking ingredient. We all know this. It’s used to help prepare and flavor many diverse dishes. However, what you might not know is the little beauty secret associated with it.

Supposedly, Julia Roberts soaks her hands and nails into olive oil to keep them soft, smooth and healthy. Because olive oil is rich in fatty acids – particularly Omega-9 and Vitamin E and K, these ingredients work together nourishing the skin and nails, as well as protecting them. If you’re really into the whole oil on skin treatment then olive oil is also great for treating the hair.

Paul Mitchell Crowns America’s “Next Top Photo Stylists”

Posted on: November 18th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

paul-mitchell-beauty-schoolsThree talented future professionals from the nationwide network of Paul Mitchell Schools have been named “Next Top Photo Stylist” by Paul Mitchell Editorial Director Lucie Doughty and a panel of distinguished judges.

Elizabeth Ankenman from Paul Mitchell The School – St. George, Erik McEwen from Paul Mitchell The School – Sherman Oaks, and Heather Burnworth of Paul Mitchell The School – Salt Lake City were named winners in the recent competition, which drew over 130 entries. The three winners will travel to Los Angeles in January for a two-day photo shoot with Paul Mitchell Editorial Director Lucie Doughty. Each winner will shoot one model with three separate style looks.

All of the hopeful contestants set up their own photo shoots, which included selecting models and photographers and designing and executing the wardrobe, hair, and makeup. Each contestant submitted photos for five out of seven categories, including texture, avante garde, contemporary classic, color, cutting, male, and long hair upstyle.

“The entries were such a high standard,” Lucie said, “I was just amazed by the creativity and technical ability. The quality of the styling and their ability to do color and translate trends and techniques were really fantastic. It was tough picking the winners because so many were good. They all should be really proud of what they submitted.”

Lucie, who has put together countless winning photo shoots for the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) and numerous other competitions said, “Competing gets you thinking about your craft, how you can perfect your work and put your inspirations and ideas together as a story. Whether you’re doing a fashion show or photo shoot, or putting together a portfolio, it’s a demonstration of your work and creativity. There’s a lot of value in entering a contest like this one, and it’s something that all future and salon professionals should do an ongoing basis. It keeps you inspired and pushing for the next level.”

Lawsuits Against Accutane for its Acne Treatment

Posted on: November 16th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-schools-accutaneIf you were like the average teenager then you probably had some troubles with acne during high school, right? You might have gone to the dermatologist and gotten some ointment or maybe you just bought acne soaps like the Neutrogena products at your local grocer.

Well, for those of you who weren’t the average teen, you might have had a case of severe acne. Waking up every morning hoping that when you’d looked in the mirror it would all just be gone, but it never was. If you suffered from disfiguring or scarring acne you probably tried everything and talked with everyone to find a way to help alleviate the breakouts. Ultimately, you probably tried Accutane.

Accutane was the last resort against the pimple plagued army. It was the last straw, an effort to bring out the big guns, the heavy hitter. Accutane’s effectiveness worked by reducing the amount of oil released by the oil glands in your skin – helping your skin renew itself as a quicker rate. It was like a miracle drug – suppressing you’re acne but causing potential side effects. For starters it severely dried your skin out and left your face with an unappealing red glow to it. More severe side effects included child birth defects during pregnancy and possible depression.

But those were just possibilities and at the time all you cared about was that your skin was clearing up. Accutane worked and despite all its side effects, you couldn’t have been happier, right?

Well, fast-forward to recent news and Accutane is back in the headlines making noise despite being taken off the market in 2009, but this time with even more serious side effects that weren’t addressed the first time you took it. The latest stir has linked Accutane with several cases of bowel risks including Inflammatory Bowel Disease like Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease include:
• Vomiting
• Abdominal cramping and pain
• Diarrhea
• Weight loss
• Bleeding of your intestines
• Rectal bleeding
• Ulcers

If you or someone you know has taken Accutane and is currently suffering or has suffered from any of the above bowel diseases or if you think you might have similar symptoms then you might have a law suit on your hands. Contact your local doctor for any further questions regarding Inflammatory Bowel Disease and your local lawyer if you think you may have a case on your hands.

5 Ways Not To Do Your Makeup Blog

Posted on: November 9th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

Beauty blogs are always posting about the newest products and the best beauty tips. To go away from the norm, here are the top five tips to NOT follow in your makeup blog with the ONLY exception being Halloween. But if you choose to partake in one of these beauty no-no’s on any other day of the year, prepare yourself for public gawking. beautyschoolsdirectory-clown

5: Makeup OVERloaddddd Killer Klowns from Outer Space was indeed the name of a 1988 cult horror movie. However, you weren’t in it, nor should you dress like you were. Women who cake on the makeup need to realize that less is actually more. It’s the way you apply it and the tricks of application that help you achieve that desired chic look. Do not, and I repeat do not apply makeup that mimics a clown. They are creepy, and you will be too if you wear enough makeup in one day to last an average human being one month.

beautyschoolsdirectory-snooki4: The fake baked orange-tainted look So summer is officially over and that means that we’re going to be seeing a lot more pale bodies surfacing over the months. It’s okay that is what we like to call natural. However, some people like to stay tanned and there’s nothing wrong with that – as long as it’s done in moderation. In the middle of December you should not look like you just got back from the beach…unless in fact you really did just get back from a vacation at the beach. Self-tanning spray or lotion and bronzer are other things you need to be wary about. If you don’t apply it correctly you can be left with that dirt in-between your fingers look. You know what it looks like. The tanning lotion settles for too long in places you wouldn’t expect and as a result it looks like you’ve just finished digging a hole to nowhere during your recess break in grade school –the webbing of your fingers is significantly darker than any other part of your skin. Not so good-looking to say the least unless you just happen to love Snookie’s copper look.

beautyschoolsdirectory-doll 3: We blush when we’re embarrassed; Lets keep it at that . Blush can be a very trivial thing, but if done correctly it can turn even the dullest appearance into a beaming beauty. The proper use of blush can help liven up an ordinary face and bring out the radiance of an unusual one. How one applies blush determines whether they can bring out the structural beauty of a face. You can add shape and dimension, refine a slightly plump one by narrowing it down or simply give your complexion the warm glow of youth. Just don’t overdo it and end up looking like Raggedy Anne or Strawberry Shortcake. Blush overload should only be allowed when doing the makeup on dolls.

beautyschoolsdirectory-blue-eyeshadow2: Easy on the blue – emulating Mimi from The Drew Carey Show isn’t in style…and never will be. Where to begin here? Blue eyeshadow, like most makeup, can be done correctly as long as the ultimate outcome blends in with the whole picture. You don’t want it to draw attention to your face like a car wreck. You want the whole package to shine. The 1960’s “straight out there for everyone to see” blue eyeshadow died off for a reason. It did however make its reappearance in the 1990’s when Mimi from The Drew Carey Show abruptly and horrifyingly brought it back. Between her and a clown…I couldn’t tell you which one is scarier.

beautyschoolsdirectory-scary 1. The “Are you tired” or “You don’t look so well” look There’s not much worse than when someone asks you if you’re tired or not feeling well when in fact you feel perfectly fine. It’s like a slap to the face and potentially to your makeup style or maybe lack thereof. Incorrect make-up color choices can actually make your skin appear tired. You’re thinking how, right? Easy – by unintentionally wearing colors with gray in them. A grayish pink blush, a grayish mauve lipstick, a grayish eyeshadow – even your foundation could be gray. So take these tips and stay away from that gray, drab look because you don’t want to wander around your work looking like a want-to-be, flesh-eating zombie do you (look at the picture below)? Yep, didn’t think so.

Keratin: The Life Changing Hair Treatment

Posted on: November 2nd, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 3 Comments

kertain-treatmentPeople all over the country are raving about the new “miracle” in hair care—keratin treatments.  Have you heard of it?  For people with unruly, frizzy, or curly hair, or hair that’s easily affected by rain and humidity, this treatment promises to smooth hair; leaving it sleek, shiny and weatherproof.  Although this sounds like an easy way to a good hair day, this treatment does cost a pretty penny.  A treatment that lasts about 2 ½ months will cost you about $300 if not more, depending on where you live.

So what is a Keratin treatment?

Keratin, a protein that is found naturally in your hair, is used to fill in dry, cracked hair cuticles in a Keratin treatment.  The treatment is mixed with small amounts of formaldehyde, applied to the hair and then the hair is sealed with a flat iron.  After the treatment, individuals are instructed to not wash their hair for three to four days to allow the solution to set in.  The result is smooth, shiny hair—even for people with naturally course, curly tresses!

Although some have raised questions about how safe formaldehyde is, most companies say they put in only trace amounts of the chemical in their solutions.  Formaldehyde is a chemical with a strong, irritating odor that is believed to be carcinogenic.  Be sure to ask your cosmetologist about the amount of formaldehyde in your Keratin treatment.  High levels are dangerous and should be avoided. Any treatment with less than two percent of the chemical, however, won’t be effective and isn’t worth your money.

So who is a good candidate for a Keratin treatment? Many people with course, frizzy hair that is difficult to work with in humid climates find the treatment highly effective, but cosmetologists say the treatment is beneficial for almost anyone.  Even if you already have straight hair, Keratin is able to be a strengthening and restorative treatment.

People continue to praise this “life-changing” hair treatment.  But the cost and safety of the product is important to consider.  Have any of you tried a Keratin treatment?  Leave us some feedback about the results—good or bad!

Dolly Parton and Betty White Partner with Paul Mitchell Schools

Posted on: October 28th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

betty-white-and-dolly-partonFor the eighth consecutive year, the nationwide network of Paul Mitchell beauty schools will spend the months of February through April raising money for charitable organizations. In 2010, the schools raised an all-time high of $1.2 million, bringing their seven-year total to over $4.6 million.

This year they plan to raise $1.5 million for six organizations: Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation, Children’s Miracle Network, Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation, Food 4 Africa, and newcomers Morris Animal Foundation, represented by Betty White, and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

“We’re so excited to welcome Betty White and Dolly Parton this year,” said Paul Mitchell Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh. “Both of these incredible women will play an active role in motivating and encouraging our 12,000 future professionals as they take part in thousands of grassroots ‘FUNraisers,’ from cut-a-thons and car washes to fashion shows and charity balls. They’ve also joined an elite group of wonderful celebrities who’ve supported us in the past, including Larry King, Fran Drescher, and Vidal Sassoon.”

Country music superstar Dolly Parton founded the Imagination Library in 1996, to benefit the children of her home county in east Tennessee. She wanted to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families, and she wanted to ensure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income. “All of the wonderful folks at Paul Mitchell Schools love kids as much as I do, so it is an honor to work with them to bring the joy of books to kids all over America,” she said.

Emmy-award winning TV star and animal activist Betty White has served on the Morris Animal Foundation board of trustees since 1971. Since its inception in 1948, the foundation has funded more than 1,600 humane animal health studies. Today, its funding supports more than 200 animal health and welfare research studies each year at the world’s most respected research institutions, colleges of veterinary medicine, and zoos. Betty is the organization’s president emeritus and she has sponsored nearly 30 health studies for the foundation. “Partnering with Paul Mitchell Schools is such a wonderful opportunity to help advance the health and well-being of our animal friends,” she said. “On behalf of Morris Animal Foundation, thank you.”

Returning to the campaign for the second year, Children’s Miracle Network founders Donny and Marie Osmond said, “In our family, we were raised to believe we all have a responsibility to give back and help others. We feel like we’ve found an extended family in Paul Mitchell Schools. From last year’s generous donation (twice the amount they originally promised) to the way they’ve reached out locally to the 170-plus Children’s Miracle Network hospitals with their love, service, and passion, Paul Mitchell Schools have shown that giving back is not just about raising money.”

Death from Pedicures, Brazilian Bikini Wax Burns and Other Beauty Dangers

Posted on: October 5th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-schools-beauty-dangersWe’ve all experienced beauty disasters—bad hair days and makeup mishaps but what about beauty emergencies?  Have you ever injured yourself thanks to your beauty routine?  Actually painful and severe injuries can occur from our everyday beauty routines.

Burns from curling irons and flat irons are probably the most common injury.  Curling irons and flat irons get up to dangerous temperatures.  It’s important to remember to turn off your iron when you’re done and keep them away from children.  According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 7,700 injuries were caused to children under 5 years old were from touching a hot curling iron.  Another 5,400 aged 15 – 24 experienced ER- treated burns from curling irons.

Pedicures can also be a health risk.  People have actually died and had amputations caused from pedicure medical problems.  Pedicure tools that aren’t properly cleaned can be a serious threat to your health.  Also, tubs you soak your feet in need to be cleaned well or they can turn into a hot bed for bacteria.  MRSA, or staph infections, that is resistant to antibiotics can also be contracted through tubs.  The best thing you can do to protect yourself is to make sure your salon disinfects well.  Also, make sure you don’t have any open cuts on your feet or legs, and as gross as it seems, don’t shave your legs before you go—less chance for bacteria to get into open pores.

Here are some less common beauty-related injuries. Don’t let these beauty emergencies happen to you! Ouch!

•    Cat Attack: One woman describes when she was using an eyelash curler and her cat jumped up on her bathroom counter at her.  She was startled and ended up pulling out ALL her eyelashes.  Although her eyelashes grew back, she had to have mix-matched eyes for awhile.

•    Shards Glass Real Life: Think skin cancer is your only risk with tanning? Think again! One woman was using a stand up tanning bed and a UV bulb burst sending shards of glass all over her body.  The woman suffered only minor cuts, but still that can’t feel good!

•    Burns in Unexpected Places: One woman in Connecticut experienced a Brazilian gone bad.  When she went for a Brazilian wax the salon technician let the hot wax drip to places it shouldn’t. Yikes! The incident resulted in severe burns that not only caused intense pain for the woman but gave her a hospital bill of $750.  Needless to say, the woman won a lawsuit of $100,000 against the salon.

So, be careful with your daily beauty routine! Even the things that make you feel great about the way you look, can also hand your some painful injuries.
