Marinello Schools Beauty Scholarship Winner Helps Others Instead

Posted on: September 29th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-school-marinello-scholarship-winnerJessica Wylie, 18, the first-place winner of the second annual Marinello Raw Talent High School Scholarship contest, wants to use her $10,000 scholarship to help abused women feel “loved, important and beautiful.”  Her remarkable story has since been published in Redding’s own Record Searchlight.

“I have been living with and mentoring girls who have been abused or victimized in some way throughout their entire lives,” Wylie wrote in her winning essay titled Beauty from Ashes. “One of the many ways they have inspired me is by giving me the dream to help their outer beauty match their inner beauty.”

Wylie, who recently started classes at the Marinello Schools of Beauty’s Redding, Calif. campus, wrote in her essay of her desire to start a program on campus where abused women could get their hair, make-up and nails done by Marinello students for free. In addition to helping the women feel better about themselves, Wylie hopes that such a program would allow her fellow students to “leave with a sense of fulfillment such as I have experienced just by being around the girls I have mentored.”

“Jessica Wylie is the kind of student we want the Marinello Raw Talent Scholarship program to benefit,” says Dr. Rashed Elyas, CEO of Marinello Schools of Beauty. “Her personal ambition goes beyond herself to consider the impact her work can have on other people. Marinello Schools of Beauty is proud to have her as a student.”

“It is my time to give back and make a difference in the lives of others,” Wylie wrote.

The exclusive Raw Talent High School Scholarship program allows students to express their desires for a rewarding career in the Beauty Industry, offering $30,000 between five fortunate seniors each year. Scholarship candidates were required to submit an essay describing how they plan to make a difference as a professional in the Beauty Industry. Upon review, selected finalists from each category of Cosmetology and Esthetics are then challenged to showcase their creativity and talent for the skills portion of the competition. In addition to the $10,000 scholarship awarded Wylie, Marinello Schools of Beauty handed out four scholarships of $5,000 each.

Want Big Doll-like Beauty Contact Lenses like Lady Gaga? You can get them… at a price.

Posted on: August 19th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 2 Comments

beauty-schools-lady-gaga-beauty-contact-lenses

Based on the history of beauty, bigger and wider-looking eyes have traditionally been considered more attractive in our society. Japan embraced this big-eyed notion as depicted in their anime cartoons and fashion, and now it’s making a strong movement in America right now.

Big circle, beauty contact lenses are the rage today among younger girls across the country wanting to be part of the latest fashion trends. Current music sensation Lady Gaga released her music video “Bad Romance,” donning a digitally created big-eyed appearance causing the beauty contact lenses trend to reach an all time high. Beauty contact lenses themselves give the wearer doll-like eyes, presenting a unique look. However, as this trend grows larger, the price for wearing beauty contacts lenses also increases and we’re not talking about dollar signs.

There are certain dangers associated with wearing these big-eye creators. What are they?

For starters, circle beauty contacts lenses aren’t FDA approved; hence, they’re illegal. You can’t get them from your local eye doctor. United States law requires contacts to be prescribed. So how are people in America getting these over sized beauty contact lenses? The same way Americans seemingly get other “illegal or pirated things” – the internet of course. For around $20-30 a pair you too can have this doll-like eye craze, but buying illegal contacts is the least of your concerns.

You could get serious eye infections.
With all contacts you have the risk of eye infections and the scary possibility of losing your sight within 24 hours if not careful. But with circle beauty contact lenses the risk is much more severe. This leads us to the next point.

Contacts need to fit properly.
Contacts are personalized for the individual wearing them. That’s why you go to the eye doctor – to get your correct eyesight diagnosed and proper contact fitting. Not one person has the same eye shape and as a result these big-eyed, one size fits all contacts may improperly fit, potentially scratching the cornea, triggering infection and causing irreparable blindness.

Consult a doctor.
If you absolutely want to be part of this big-eyed fashion craze then do it the smart way. Consult your local eye doctor and ask what kind of various contact alternatives he/she can prescribe you. At the end of the day fashions come and go, but you wouldn’t want to say the same about your eyesight.

Five Tips to Great Looking, Healthy Skin

Posted on: July 27th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-school-directory-healthy-skinWe all know that summer is one of the most enjoyable times of the year. The sun is shining, the weather is warm, pools are open and you get to bust out those summer clothes. However, amidst all of the fun and enjoyment there are risks to your skin! Here are five tips to help you keep your skin looking healthy and phenomenal all summer:

1) SPF is your BFF. Anytime you’re outside for extended periods of time make sure you put sunscreen on every exposed area. Yes that includes your ears, hands and toes. Depending on how dark your skin is use a sunscreen with an appropriate SPF number. SPF 15 is pretty weak and most likely will not help at all in the summer. Make sure to reapply and check to see if it’s waterproof!

2)  Accessorize for the sun. It’s pretty clear that the more clothes you are wearing the less your skin is exposed to the sun. Remember that cotton prevents sunburn unless it is a white fabric. Accessories can help too! Hats are back in style and are great for sun protection, as are sunglasses and sun umbrellas. The bigger the better.

3)  Stay moisturized. There’s nothing like lying in the sun to remove the moisture from your skin, therefore it’s very important to stay moisturized! Using salt scrubs and moisturizing body washes will be a great help for dry or peeling skin. Applying lotions, especially ones containing Aloe Vera, on a daily basis will keep your skin moist and feeling silky smooth.

4)  Water, water everywhere. Your skin reflects what you drink and eat. Drinking lots of water and eating healthy will definitely show in your skin. Stay hydrated and eat foods rich in vitamin D to hydrate your skin through the heat spells.

5)  Hide ‘n Seek. The sun’s rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day. It is important to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun at this time by either staying inside or finding areas with shade. Even on cloudy overcast day, the sun could be damaging your skin if you are exposed. Try your best to hide out and avoid the direct sunlight, especially when the sun is at its strongest.

Five Beauty Tips To Bring Out Your Guy’s Robert Pattinson Side

Posted on: July 23rd, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

beauty-schools-directory-robert-pattinsonIf Rob Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are at one end of the hunk scale, there’s no reason why your guy has to be at the other end. Here are five beauty care tips just for men.

MANicure, not manicure
You know how a manicure makes you feel and look. The stars know it too. How can you convince your guy to get one? Emphasize the man in manicure. Try easing him into the idea with a couple’s massage. They are fun for you and him, plus will help get him into the salon.

Eyebrow waxing
Sway your guy to get an eyebrow waxing. Tell him it’s a lot like a bikini waxing. Say whatever after this. You had him at bikini.

Sunscreen everyday
Sun isn’t just harmful to vampires. The sun’s harmful rays damage all skin. Whether he works indoors or out, your guy should apply a daily facial sunscreen. Make it part of his daily habit. Cleverly position it next to his razor and shaving cream. It will become second nature much like his aftershave.

Trips to the Barber
Turn your guy into a leading man with regular trips to the barber. Maintaining his manly locks will allow him to look clean-cut on all occasions, or he can take a tip from Rob and go for the organized shaggy do.

Wardrobe Update
Hey, it’s all how you package it. Get your guy out of his man cave and into the store. Updating his look won’t give him six pack abs, but a new look will definitely move him up on the hunk scale.

Four Odd Celebrity Beauty Routines (including one to rid cellulite)

Posted on: July 20th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-schools-directory-cindy-crawfordBelow are a few of the bizarre things that certain celebrities do to maintain that glamorous look. Who said Hollywood and showbiz are nothing but glam? Sometimes you have to get dirty to look magnificent.

1. You’ve heard of pearly whites. What about Strawberry whites?
Strawberries have always been known for their deliciously sweet taste and nutritious value. But would you believe it if someone told you that they can help whiten your teeth?

That’s right. Katherine Zeta-Jones uses strawberries to help whiten her teeth. The juice in strawberries contains malic acid which serves as an astringent and can help cleanse and lighten surface stains. Other fruits like apples and pineapples work similarly. Just don’t go on thinking you can eat a strawberry every time you need to brush your teeth. It may help whiten those choppers, but it won’t help clean them.

2. Milk…it really does do the body good, honestly.
We’ve all heard the slogan “milk, it does the body good,” right? Well, did you ever actually believe it? If you answered no, then you’re obviously not familiar with Cindy Crawford’s beauty tip on maintaining healthy skin.

Crawford actually uses milk as a face moisturizer by adding it to the water that she spritzes on her face during the day. Milk, which is rich in vitamins, amino acids and minerals, has a protein property that uniquely helps to soothe, hydrate and calm the skin.

3. Snake venom…umm, how and why is this a beauty secret?
As far as you can remember you’ve been told that anything with the word venom in it is extremely bad and to keep away entirely, let alone rub it on your face! So then why is one celebrity using snake venom as a beauty product?

You heard it correctly. Debra Messing uses a Kate Summerville eye cream that actually contains a certain type of snake’s venom to help keep her skin surrounding the eyes firm and radiant. The venom ingredient actually helps slow the muscle response in the eye, lessening tension and relaxing the area around the eye.

4. We all know coffee is an energy perk, but did you know it could perk up your caboose?
As you know millions of people drink coffee for that much needed wake-me-up in the morning and throughout the tiring work day. But, did you know that coffee may actually perk up more than just your energy level? Apparently Halle Berry believes it does.

Allegedly, Halle Berry mixes in coffee grinds with her body wash to help keep her rear firm and smooth, alleviating any potential attacking cellulite. Since coffee has caffeine, which is a stimulant and a diuretic, it increases blood flow in the applied area of the skin helping to detoxify and breakup cellulite causing toxins and fat deposits.

Just don’t try pouring coffee directly on yourself unless you feel like telling the doctor how and why you burned your bum.

Well, there you have it. Celeb life isn’t always all bliss. Sometimes you have to get creative and in some circumstances interesting, to say the least, in order to maintain that Hollywood appearance. Personally, however, I think I’ll keep my milk in my cereal bowl, my coffee grinds in my coffee pot and any hint of snake venom as far away from myself as possible, but hey, to each their own. No one ever said beauty was easy.

Three Things You Should Know About Sunless Tanning Lotions

Posted on: July 16th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 4 Comments

beautyschoolsdirectory-sunless-tanningNow that we’re well into summer, I’m definitely feeling that tug of longing to have beautifully bronzed skin.

But since I don’t feel like turning into a toasty lobster, I’ve been lathering on the sunscreen and staying in the shade a little bit more this year. Does this mean I’ll have to sacrifice that bronze glow for my skin? According to the sunless tanning lotion industry, the answer is… Absolutely not!

But before I go running for the lotion bottles, let’s clear up some sunless tanning lotion myths.

1. Newly-developed ingredients can change the effectiveness of sunless tanners.

Nope. Almost all sunless tanners out there today contain the same two active ingredients that they have for years: DHA (or dihydroxyacetone) and erythrulose. Almost all other ingredients are considered moisturizers, fragrances or just plain marketing gimmicks.

2. Strategically layering and shading sunless tanners can have a slimming effect.

Hmm. This one is tricky. If you’re strictly going for a slimming effect in photographs and you have very advanced airbrushing skills, go for it! But in real life? If you saw a lady walking down the street with dark streaks on the outside of her thighs, chances are you would notice that, and not necessarily in a good way. For the real world, you’ll probably want to stick to one shade of bronze only.

3. Religiously exfoliating your skin makes your bronze glow last and last.

That depends on who you ask. Many skin experts say exfoliating probably helps your tan-from-a-bottle look better and last longer. However, some sunless tanner manufacturers are perpetuating the myth that a sunless tan will last a week or longer. Unfortunately, all the exfoliating in the world won’t make that a reality. At most, sunless tans will last between five and seven days. Then, you’ll have to reapply.

Now, it’s time to go forth and look like a bronze beauty! Have any sunless tanner stories to share (good or bad)? We would love to hear them!

How To Make Brittle Hair Stronger

Posted on: July 13th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

Few people seem tobeauty-school-directory-brittle-hair know this but your thyroid’s health directly affects your hair. If you have a sluggish thyroid then your hair will ultimately suffer. It will become brittle, dry and slow in regards to normal growth cycles.

Solving this issue isn’t as easy as it may look on the outside. Having a healthy thyroid is also key not only to having beautiful, healthy hair, but for overall bodily functions. Thyroid health is directly affected by your fluoride intake. Fluoride poisoning will cause the previously mentioned nasty effects on your locks.

So how do you avoid it, especially when the majority of cities in the United States now have municipal codes that require that city water has a small amount of fluoride added to it? Don’t drink that water and don’t make tea that uses tea leaves.

Tea leaves contain almost four times the fluoride of fluoride-enhanced city water. There was a thought floating around that stated fluoride could completely prevent cavities. As of today, studies are inconclusive. So how do you drink the tea you love without risking your hair?

Switch to herbal teas that contain dried herbs, spices and fruits, but no tea leaves. Some toothpastes and mouthwashes also contain a decent amount of fluoride that could cause some hair damage.

So take a stand, help your thyroid and it will help you in return by making your hair absolutely stunning!

Should Cosmetology Students Be Required to Wear Makeup to School?

Posted on: June 28th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 5 Comments

beautyschoolsdirectory-makeup-requirements1Many professionals in a niche industry require a certain standard of clothing in the workplace, not only to adhere to protocol but also as a way to get the full experience and become apart of the team. This is especially so for medical, service and beauty professionals. If a student is enrolled in cosmetology school, it only seems appropriate for their dress code to adhere to the latest makeup trends and represent the beauty industry. Wearing makeup should be a part of uniform dress code policy, just how hostesses have to wear black, doctors have to wear scrubs and lab techs have to wear white coats. It is not common for beauty schools to have a “mandatory makeup” policy or else you can be sent home due to not obeying dress code standards.

Although they work under these policies, some staff members of beauty schools that enforce a makeup dress code policy feel it should not be enforced, rather a freedom of expression if the student chooses to. They find it absurd and “could never enforce such a requirement.” I can’t help but ask the question, “Why study beauty if you have no interest in practicing the concepts on yourself?” Where is the passion if you aren’t even passionate enough to perform on yourself?

But here is a kicker! What if you are one of those individuals (displaying vampire-like qualities like the Cullens) and are just naturally beautiful? You so are blessed that you don’t need to dab your nose with one ounce of makeup, pout your lips with one drop of lip gloss and sweep your eyes with one glaze of eye shadow. Can you force an already non-makeup wearing person to compile with the rules? Well, rules are rules. It can only make them more beautiful I suppose.

Three Easy Alcohol Spa Treatments To Try At Home

Posted on: June 17th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-school-directory-alcohol-spa-treatmetnsEver thought about mixing alcohol in a mani and pedi treatement? Many big city salons offer alcohol in their spa services as a way to actually exfoliate dead skin. We thought this could be a clever way to practice our knowledge learned in nail tech school with a little summer R&R. Digging to find the best ones out there, we’ve gathered three do it yourself treatments from health.com to try at home.

1. The Martini Manicure
How it works: The alcohol acts as an antiseptic, and the citrus from the lime contains alpha hydroxy acids to exfoliate dead skin.

Directions: Combine ½ cup sugar, ½ cup olive oil, 2 tablespoons of Bacardi Grand Melon or Bacardi Limón, 1/4 cup shredded coconut, and 2 tablespoons of mashed cantaloupe into a bowl. Mix well and apply to hands (or feet) and massage into skin 2 – 3 minutes before rinsing.

2. Margarita Salt Scrub
How it works: The salt acts as an exfoliator, and the alcohol in the tequila cleanses skin.

Directions: Combine 1 cup of fine sea salt, 2 ounces of olive oil, the juice of 1 lime, and ½ shot of white tequila in a cup or bowl until blended. Slather the mixture onto damp skin in gentle circular motions. (You can do this while taking a shower or bath). Let sit for a few minutes then rinse.

3. The Beer Pedicure
How it works: The yeast in the beer softens the bottoms of feet, and the alcohol is antibacterial and works as a natural antiseptic.

Directions: Fill a bowl or basin with enough warm water to cover your ankles. Add ½ bottle of your favorite beer, and stir. Keep your feet in the mixture for 10 –15 minutes, then cover with lotion.
