Take a Summer Vacation From Your Usual Workplace Makeup

Posted on: June 10th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-school-summer-makeup

This summer’s makeup is all about—well summer.  Pool blue eye shadows and bright strawberry margarita lips are showing up throughout magazines and on makeup counters.  Most of us can’t wait to wear these cheerful, eye-popping shades, but pulling it off in a 9 a.m. office meeting isn’t the easiest task.

Can you appropriately rock these bright colors that scream “beach party!” while working on your Monday morning memo?  Sure you can, and we’ll tell you how.

Choose one area to highlight
The key to wearing summer makeup to work is highlighting just one facial feature.  Going overboard on bright colors will not only make you look clown-like, but it will be way too much under the fluorescent lights of the office. Wearing too many colors can also seem unprofessional when meeting with your managers or clients.  However, a bright, shimmery blush or intense, teal eyeliner can make a classy statement and give you a smart, seasonal flair.

More summer makeup suggestions to brighten your workday

•    Soak up the sun. You may not be getting a tan in front of your computer screen, but you can sure fake it! Bronzers and shimmery golden eyeshadows can give you a sun-kissed look.
•   Be inspired by your favorite drink. Margarita green eyeshadow, daiquiri-colored lip gloss or a pale lemonade yellow on your nails can all give you a “delicious” and refreshing color scheme.
•   Look around you. Summer can be one of the most beautiful times of the year.  You can find make-up ideas in the many colors around you: the aquamarine ocean, glistening sand, cherry pie on Independence Day or swimsuit patterns you see at the pool.
•    Don’t mix and match too many brights. Take a tip from makeup artist Deborah Grayson. If you’re uneasy about going too bright during the day, use a light touch of color instead. “It’s all about modifying with layers,” she says. “If you want to wear a dense or vivid tone, apply a sheer layer for work; then after-hours, you can layer on more of the same.”

So go ahead. Don’t be afraid to give yourself a summer vacation with your makeup at the office!

Dermalogica Opens Skin Care Academy in NYC

Posted on: April 13th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

dermalogica-academy1Skin care giant Dermalogica is no stranger to beauty schools around the world. A  long time favorite of esthetic programs and skin care experts, the brand recently opened a new undergraduate skin therapy academy in New York City.

After founding nearly forty of their postgraduate International Dermal Institutes around the world, opening an undergraduate facility was the next logical step. The 6,000 square foot space is state-of-the-art and is the only LEED-certified trade school in Manhattan. Students will learn using popular Apple products, including the iPod Touch, iPhone and the new iPad device. The academy building includes a classroom, lab, MicroZone stations that offer 20-minute express treatments, a Skin Bar for skin analysis and a Treatment Room. According to Dermalogica founder Jane Wurwand, the academy will offer a skin therapy education unlike that found at most cosmetology schools:

“In most states, undergraduate skin therapy programs are offered by cosmetology schools — typically run by hair care companies and hairdressers — where hairdressing is the focus. There is a need for schools that are solely focused on skin and the business of skin, which requires an entirely different business model than hair.”

Spa fans can visit the 10-bed treatment room to receive a discounted facial — $50 as opposed to $110 at the dermalogica-academy-1nearby Dermalogica retail-spa outpost  — by a student eight weeks into training, under the direction of a licensed skin care therapist. Dermalogica-trained skin therapists do extractions gently by hand, rather than use the metal comedone tool to remove clogged pores, which Frost said can damage skin and break capillaries.

Interested in enrolling? Classes begin May 18th and after completing 600 hours of training in less than 18 weeks, the licensing requirements of New York State, the academy will help assist you in job placement across the 7,500 salons and spas that carry the Dermalogica line. Visit dermalogicaacademy.com to enroll or for more information. Don’t live in New York? No problem! Find an esthestics program near you!

Banish Acne with High-Tech Beauty Gadgets

Tria Clarifying Blue Light Starter Kit

There’s a new wave of beauty tools promising to clear blemished skin and they’re decidedly high-tech. While the use of lasers and LED lights to cure acne isn’t new, using such technology at home definitely is!

Over the last few years several manufacturers have released anti-aging LED systems for use at home. Now these companies are moving into the next frontier in problematic skin care: Acne.

Two new gadgets promising to rid skin of blemishes have hit the beauty scene in the last few weeks from spa giant, Bliss, and Tria Beauty, one of the originators of home LED systems.

Tria Clarifying Blue Light ($395) promises to clear acne in 8 weeks by destroying pimple-causing bacteria with its blue light technology.

Bliss

Bliss Pore'fector Gadget Kit

Basically, the idea is to kill bacteria before it has a chance to reek havoc in your pores.

Also new to the beauty scene is Bliss Pore’fector Gadget ($185). Seemingly made for the habitual pimple-picker, the Pore’fector Gadget claims to be a more sanitary way to purge pores. Bliss claims this tool will generate “sonic vibrations” that extract impurities from clogged pores.

While these beauty tools sound great, there are a couple of things the many consumers will consider before rushing out to purchase. First, these items cost a lot more than the usual tube of pimple cream most reach for to zap a zit. Secondly, and probably most importantly, are the matters of efficacy and safety. These tools have been approved for safe use by the FDA, which makes this beauty blogger wonder how effective they really are. If I have to see a dermatologist for serious LED skin-care, are these at-home tools really going to make a difference in someone’s skin?

Time will tell if these high-tech acne-fighters will take off. In the meantime let us know if you would buy one of these products!

Don’t Forget the Sunscreen!

Posted on: March 30th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

shutterstock_49236946Spring has finally sprung! It time to get outdoors and enjoy nature. But as you leave your home, there’s one beauty must you mustn’t forget – sunscreen!

When searching for sunscreen, it’s important purchase one with both UVA and UVB ray protection. Many reports claim that UVA radiation is more harmful the UVB. According to the Environmental Working Group, in 2008 only 29% of sunscreens on the market contained FDA approved UVA filters. The good news is, by the summer of 2009 that number had increased by 70%.

Here are some sunscreens for you to try this spring and summer that provide both UVA and UVB protection:

La Roche-Posay is known for their innovative sun protection products, and their Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizer SPF 15 is no exception. This is a great option for protecting and moisturizing facial skin at the same time, with one simple product.

Neutrogena is a major heavyweight in the skincare market and they continue to outdo themselves when their new products hit store shelves. Neutrogena® Spectrum+ Advanced Sunblock Lotion SPF 55, 70, & 100 is their latest product, and features their Helioplex360Technology, which protects skin from UVA rays, UVB rays and oxidative damage.

For those who prefer natural skin care products, you needn’t go without protection from the sun! Check out Jason Natural Sunbrella Chemical Free Sunscreen collection. The line included sunscreen products for the face, lips and body, that are PABA-free, Alcohol-free, and water resistant.

What sunscreens do you use to protect your skin? Have you tried any of these products out? Let us know!

Jessica Simpson Discovers “The Price of Beauty”

Last night, VH1 aired “The Price of Beauty”, a new reality TV show featuring Jessica Simpson touring the world and visiting different cultures – and discovering that while beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the love of beauty is universal.

Simpson, accompanied by her best friends CaCee Cobb and celeb hairstylist Ken Paves, will spend time with women from a variety of different backgrounds, visiting seven different countries and learning about and participating in beauty rituals around the world.

The first stop was Thailand and Simpson and friends traveled to Bangkok to learn about their beauty culture and regiments. The trip started with Thai massages, which looked more painful than relaxing but the benefits include increased circulation and posture correction. They went on to learn that in Thailand, the paler the skin the more beautiful you are – which is a complete opposite as Simpson pointed out in American beauty culture. They ended the trip in the northern part of Thailand where women stretch their necks with gold rings. It’s a symbol of beauty and wealth and helps the women of the Karen tribe attract spouses.

As Simpson says, “I’m interested in learning more about myself and what I value in myself and letting that be the beautiful part of me, rather than putting on the makeup or wearing the right designer.  It really is about the heart of a woman that makes her beautiful.”

So, did you catch “The Price of Beauty”? What did you think? What are your thoughts on beauty practices in other cultures? Share!

Tennis Star Serena Williams Goes to Beauty School!

Posted on: February 18th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

serena-1-croppedTennis super star Serena Williams has accomplished pretty much every thing a tennis player dreams of. She’s won over $30 Million in prize money, Olympic Gold Medals and more titles than I can count! And let’s not forget her partnership with Mission Skincare, and  her uber-popular line of handbags, jewelry and clothing sold on HSN. Once a girl has accomplished all that, what’s left for her to do? Go to beauty school, that’s what!

Serena recently posted an entry on her blog sharing that she’s enrolled in a Florida nail tech school near her home. What made her decide to enroll? Her love of a good mani/pedi!

“No one likes getting their nails done more than I do.  As a matter of fact I go every 4 days to get a manicure and every 7 days for a pedicure. So, I had a brilliant idea to get certified to be a nail tech. Besides the fact that I am coming out with a nail collection from a company called HairTech, I thought “Serena this is a no brainer.”  Immediately after I came home from the Australian Open I researched some schools and enrolled in a course that allowed me to complete 240 hours (that’s what u have to do to get certified at least in Fla.) at my own pace. 240 hours may seem like a lot, but I intend on completing it within the year.”

Serena snapped some pics of herself and her classmates on their first day at nail tech school. Take a look!

“Today was my first day and boy was I excited! When I got there, they immediately had us do pedicures on each other. I wanted to make sure I did it just the way the real salons do it, so I began with asking the girl if she wanted any water to drink. I was so relieved when she said no, because honestly, I didn’t have any to give her. Then I asked her to pick a color and she said French!! I’ve never done french, but I was determined to not butcher it.  Luckily, thanks to my weekly pedicures I took my time and it came out great. I know it wasn’t just me thinking I did good because all of the other girls kept asking if I had done this before. They thought I was on that show called “I get that a lot!”

“My next class is in a few days, but I’ll keep you guys posted on my progress. Don’t be surprised if you hear about a part time job I’ve picked up at a local nail salon.”

How awesome is that?! What do you think about Serena’s decision to go to beauty school? How would you react if a celeb turned up in your cosmetology school class? Let’s hear it!

Valentine’s Day Beauty – Countdown to a Night on the Town

Posted on: February 11th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

valentines-post-image

Valentine’s Day is just a few days away! Got big plans? Here are 5 steps for an easy beauty prep!

3 Days Away – Wax Poetic

Give yourself enough time to bounce back from bikini clean up. You don’t want to get caught with swelling, redness, and tenderness, but not too far ahead because annoying new hairs can pop up quick.

Not sure you’re up for a wax? Why not try a great alternative?

2 Days Away – Faux Glow Spray

As any esthetician will tell you, avoid the tanning beds. If you want a faux glow, try a spray tan booth. Two days should be enough for it to soak in so you can rinse the excess off. You want to look hot, not look like you’re auditioning for Jersey Shore.

Day Before – Eyebrow Wax

Give your brow a little time to heal after the treatment creates some redness. You want him to gaze into your eyes, not get distracted by what’s going on between them.

Morning Of – Get Ready with a ManiPedi

The big day means a Sunday morning nail session is in order. A neutral shade is always chic, but don’t be afraid to experiment for a seductive result.

Just Hours to Go – Care for Hair

This is where you can really shine and be noticed. Try something different, like loose waves for the big night, or boost the body and control with a little bit of salt water treatment. Have a look at these professional styles so you can make it sexy and unexpected!

Ready to go? Apply your favorite lip gloss to your kissable pout and have fun this Sunday night!

Grammy Beauty 2010

Posted on: February 2nd, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

Grammy night 2010 was full of hot music performances and high fashion that kept everyone talking well into the next day. But let’s not overlook the beauty! Take a look at some of our favorite beauty looks of the 2010 Grammys and the products you can use to recreate them at home or on your clients.

carrie-underwood

Carrie Underwood’s look was all glamour for the Grammys! She went for the smokey eye and nude lip combo, which is a modern classic. Try Lauren Luke My Smokey Classics and My Glossy Lips Complete Makeup Palette to recreate Carrie’s look with just one set of products!

Carrie’s shoulder length bob was incredibly shiny and featured a sultry side-swept bang. To get locks that shine like the American Idol star’s, smooth on a dime sized amount of CHI Silk Infusion before styling hair with a flat iron.

taylor-swiftTaylor Swift channeled old Hollywood for her big night at the Grammys. Her wavy ‘do, kohl rimmed eyes and sheer red lip color was a blast from the beauty past! Even the straightest hair can mimic Taylor’s sexy waves with the Rsession Tools Nalu Waver.

To get Taylor’s makeup look, line the upper and lower eyelid with Make Up For Ever Kohl Pencil for dramatic effect, and finish the look with Lipstick Queen Medieval Lipstick for a sheer burst of crimson color, and a healthy dose of Vitamin E.

lady-gagaLady Gaga not only turns heads with her performances, but with her show-stopping beauty looks. While this look in its entirety is not for every day wear (or the faint of heart) there are some great things to be pulled from this look.

For starters, Lady Gaga’s eye makeup application was impeccable! The strong brow, metallic eye color and lush lashes made for a bold and dramatic eye look. Create a bold, but natural, eye brow with MAC Eye Brows pencil. Turn to MAC Eye Shadow in Electra and MAC 6 Lash false lashes for perfect duplicates of the products used on Lady Gaga.

For a mod look, recreate Lady Gaga’s pastel pink pout with Lime Crime Candyfuture Lipstick in Great Pink Planet. If you really want to take a walk on the wild side, clip in a few Yellow Clip On Hair Extensions to bring out your inner Lady Gaga!

So, what do you think of these beauty looks? Will you be trying any of them? What celeb had your favorite look on Grammy night? Let us hear it!
