Barber School vs. Cosmetology School – What’s the difference?

If you are considering becoming a hairstylist, then there are two types of schools from which you can learn your trade – cosmetology school and barber school. Barber school will teach you how to properly cut, style and color (primarily) men’s hair and facial hair. In comparison, a cosmetology program will provide you with a more varied education that includes hair, nails, makeup and skin care, and you will serve both male and female clients.

Barber School

People who wish to specialize in facial hair along with cutting and styling men’s hair should consider attending barber school. Your services will geared towards men with the occasional short hair cut for a woman. Certification for becoming a barber is completed on average in 9 to 12 months. You start with the basics, theory, and safety and sanitation, then later move onto more advanced techniques of shaving, hair coloring and cutting as you progress through the barbering program.

Once you have finished your schooling then you will be able to work as a professional once you have passed your licensing exam. States vary on the number of hours you need to have before crossing this line. Also, keep in mind that some states only allow barbers to handle razors and shaving. If you wish to open a full service barber shop in a state with these restrictions, then attending a barber school over a cosmetology school might be the best choice for you.

Cosmetology School

The decision of attending a cosmetology school might be a better choice if you wish to offer more services than just shaving and cutting hair for men. This means that as a hairstylist, you will need a well-rounded education that can cater to both men and women. Most of the time you will attend a program and graduate in the same amount of time it takes to complete barber school, approximately 9 to 12 months. Again, training hours will vary, but training hours required are almost always the same as barber license requirements. The difference with cosmetology school is that you will learn about nail technology, some makeup artistry, and some esthetics and skin care in addition to learning hairstyling.

Cosmetology school offers you the foundation you need to work as a hairstylist or other beauty professional to men and women. You will be able to work with a variety of clients and offer a full salon service from nails to facials. You will also need to pass a cosmetology licensing exam once you finish your program. In fact, many states wish for you to continue training throughout your career to ensure that you are up to standard on all of the latest techniques and health codes.

No matter where you decide to attend school, it is important that you have a passion for what you do. Barbering and cosmetology are both social jobs; they will require you to be outgoing and understanding when you consult with your clients. Your final decision really depends on your dream job, the different services that you hope to provide in your job, the clientele you want, and the regulations of the state you live in.

Rumble in the Jungle Barber Contest

This year’s winner of the Rumble in the Jungle Barber Contest oozed energy, literally. With red horns, feathers, and a red bull can to top it off, Shermel Meekes showed off the youthful energy of this year’s contest. Her stylist of this look was David Hemphill of Top of the Line Salon on Dave Lyle Boulevard.

The Rumble in the Jungle barber contest takes place every year in North Carolina. The founder, Karen Shabazz, created this barber and stylist competition to commemorate Black History Month. This was the first year stylists were allowed to participate in the competition, in addition to barbers.

Over 300 people attended the Rumble in the Jungle and rumble they did. Intensely, viewers watched hair experts do everything from giving hair cuts to literally molding hair into sculptures. Stylists like Hemphill sought to recreate objects of pop culture, such as the red bull can. This made viewing fun for the audience, as they felt more connected to the stylist and barber world.

Stylists and barbers were then judged based on their hair creations and could receive cash prizes. Tresse Smith created a hairstyle for those with a sweet tooth and won a cash prize. Entitled “Tresse’s Candy Fantasy,” the hair style featured hair sculpted in the shape of a candy box and overflowed with candy jewels. Curls of hair spilled out of the black candy box, featuring pink, green, purple, and white specks of confectionary genius. Smith is owner of her own shop called Tresse’s House of Mo’ Hair in Rock Hill, North Carolina.

Hair experts were given two periods of 45 minutes to whip up their most fabulous hair creations. During this time, audience members were treated to live entertainment, interpretive dancing, and high fashion shows. Creative poetry readings also filled the space from when hair experts began their creations to the end time.

Judges used three criteria to pick the winners of the day. The criteria combined professionalism, creativity, and blend. Jamal Shabazz was one of the other winners of the day. His creativity sparked some laughs in the audience and judge panel. Perhaps it was the spunk of his design, or the immaculate shaving of the model’s head. As Shabazz turned his model around in the swivel chair, audience members caught a glimpse of a first place ribbon shaved in the model’s hair. Needless to say, judges awarded Shabazz the first place ribbon in the barber category.

The barbering contest was a huge hit and also shed light on the important role barbering played in Black History Month. The contest gave barbers a chance to hone in on their skills and ultimately become better barbers. Karen Shabazz plans on hosting the event once again next year and hopes for an even larger turnout.

The Fine Art of Shaving the Old-Fashioned Way

art-of-shaving-ts57304415It’s a secret that licensed barbers and those attending barbering school already know: If you want your beard and mustache area to feel completely smooth, you should put down the disposable razor and back away quickly. Instead, take a moment to think about how your grandfather shaved – his techniques might provide you with a better shave. Take a look at the tips below and give some old-fashioned shaving methods a shot. We think that, once you try them, you won’t go back.

Razors and Soaps
Stop buying the disposable razors, and start using a double-edged safety razor. Typically, you can buy a brand-new one for about $30 or $40 made by a manufacturer like Merkur or Edwin Jagger; however, some of the pricier brands will run you up to $100. You could always opt for a used one that you can obtain from Ebay or an antique shop. You might want to ask your grandfather if he still has his.

Use a soap or shaving cream that is more traditional. These lather better and smell better. They’re made of all natural ingredients, so you’ll actually know what you’re putting on your skin.

Blades and Brushes
When you choose a blade, there’s no right or wrong one. You have to evaluate each blade for yourself until you find the best one for you, since blades vary in sharpness and shape.

For those who are unfamiliar with using a brush to shave, you’re really missing out. Brushes provide you with extra hydration, resulting in a thicker lather. The brush reaches areas around your whiskers that you won’t be able to get with your hand. Ultimately, this makes for a closer, smoother shave. You’ll have the option of either a badger or a boar bristle brush. You should expect to pay a little more for a badger brush, but the money will be worth it because this soft-bristled brush lathers more and feel better on your skin.

Technique Tips
Soften your bread or mustache prior to shaving. Take a hot shower or place a damp, hot rag on your face to moisten it before you shave. Place some shaving cream or soap on your hand. Use only about a dab of cream about the size of nickel. Apply the cream with your hand, and the use your brush in a circular motion to spread it around. After you have a nice lather, go over all of it with a brush once or twice.

Apply as little pressure as possible when you’re shaving, and make sure hold the blade at an angle of about 30 or 45 degrees. Always remember, shave with the hairs, not against them. Finally, take the hair off in layers, rather than trying to take off your entire beard with a few swipes of the razor.

Always splash some cold water on your face when you’re done to close your pores. Additionally, you want to choose a nice aftershave as a complement.

Benefits
Not only will you receive a closer shave, but you’ll also reduce your chances of ingrown hairs, redness and even razor rash. You’ll spend less money and have a lower negative impact on the environment, since the blades and other equipment end up costing less and are recyclable.

The Zohan (2008)
Adam Sandler stars as Zohan, an Israeli Special Forces Soldier who fakes his death? Why – so he can reemerge in New York City as a sexually revved hair stylist saving the world. Not your everyday plot but hey, that’s okay. Along the way you’ll laugh as Sandler struts around kicking you know what and taking names in cut off short shorts, a sleeveless t-shirt and a feathered hairdo that makes Fabio look like just got arrested by the fashion police.

Edward Scissor Hands (1990)
This cult hit helped spark the dynamic duo of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, as it pit Depp into the role of his career (next to Jack Sparrow) – an artificial man named Edward, who literally has scissors for hands. Although this movie is as weird as it is funny and heart-felt, it lands on our list because after Edward is taken in by a suburban family, he learns that maybe his scissor hands aren’t the worst thing after all. In fact, he starts putting them to use and becomes the most popular kid on the block – sculpting shrubbery and, yep you got it, cutting hair for the neighborhood’s house wives.

Barbershop (2002)
Although Barbershop has a well-known cast (Ice Cube, Eve… well, just read the movie poster below), none of the barbers stick out as much as Eddie (Cedrick the Entertainer). Why? Because the movie is obviously about a barber shop (couldn’t have guessed that right?) but throughout the whole movie he never so much cuts a single piece of hair. He plays a 60-plus-year-old barber who has paid his dues and doesn’t feel the need to cut, snip or shave any more hair in his lifetime. Did we mention that he’s constantly causing the majority of the laughs, too?

Coming to America (1988)
A classic comedy starring Eddie Murphy in several comedic roles including one scene where he plays two roles simultaneously – one as a scamming barber and one as Akim (the protagonist) as he seemingly gives himself a haircut. It’s a funny scene and Murphy really tries to encapsulate the over-the-top antics that would ensue at a local barber shop in New York City.

Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
Well, Johnny Depp makes his second appearance on this list as he personifies the infamous barber/murderer, Sweeny Todd. Depp must just love incorporating sharp hair cutting utensils on set or maybe he’s contemplating opening his own barber shop on the side to go with his acting career. Anyways, Sweeny Todd finds itself in a paradox of cheery musical numbers contrasted by the gruesome plotline of this age old urban tale. Regardless, Depp plays a demon barber and hence he lands on the list…again.

The Barber (2001)
Following closely in the same sadistic sense of Sweeny Todd, Malcolm McDowell, like Depp, plays the role of a local barber and serial killer. Set in Alaska, the movie brings forth the concept of psychological darkness as it shows the interaction and relation between the mind of a psychopath and those of ordinary people.
