4 Books Every Serious Cosmetologist Should Read

Posted on: July 27th, 2012 by Heather No Comments

We put together a list of four books that every serious cosmetologist should have on their shelves. Not only can these books be page after page of beneficial information, they can be used as a reference guide for both beginners and experts or provide inspiration when you need it most. In the world of cosmetology, these 4 cosmetology books stand out as must-reads.

The first cosmetology book is Milady’s latest textbook. Ok, obvious, I know. But hear me out. Since 1938, the Milady textbook has been one of the leading resources for cosmetology schools. Throughout the years, the Milady textbook has updated and reinvented itself with information regarding the latest trends in the industry. But the book also still includes timeless information regarding makeup application and other basic procedures. As of 2012, the book has updated the infection control section, as well as new procedures and a step-by-step guide for left-handed individuals. It’s so thorough and up-to-date, you really should try to always have the latest edition on-hand.

Start Your Own Hair Salon and Day Spa is another book that every cosmetologist should read. Whether you are looking into opening your own spa, or you are interested in advancing your salon and spa management skills, this book covers it all – from choosing a venue to open your salon to planning for the future growth of your business. Even if you don’t have the entrepreneurial spirit and you just are or want to be a leading stylist at your salon, this cosmetology book is a must-read. The book features information regarding prices, marketing and establishing and maintaining a strong relationship with vendors, and so much more.

It’s not all manuals when it comes to books about cosmetology. If you are interested in an inspirational story about the amazing adventure of a woman who went to Afghanistan shortly after the fall of the Taliban in 2001 to teach women cosmetology, check out Kabul Beauty School. She was there with a group offering humanitarian aid. Unlike many of the doctors and nurses she was participating with, Deborah did not have nearly as much to offer, or so she thought. However, this mother and hairdresser learned that she had a talent for befriending individuals throughout the community. It was not long until she started showing off her talents, and the citizens became interested in her craft. Two years later in 2003, she opened up the Kabul Beauty School, which empowered women to take charge and thought them how to do makeup and hair. The story even included how the Afghan women in troubled marriages inspired her to leave her own unhealthy marriage.

Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual: For Everyone from Beginner to Pro is an excellent book for cosmetologists. Bobbi Brown, (no, not Whitney Houston’s daughter), has 25 years experience in the field, and she is dishing out the information. She provides an informative guide that includes information on makeup techniques like eyeliner, blush and bronzer and other special techniques to create a flawless makeup look. She also supplies readers with bonus information regarding skin care and foot care. There is even a special section dedicated to breaking into the industry and how to work with celebrities!

So whether you’re looking for a graduation gift for your favorite cosmetology school graduate, or you’re just not sure what to buy your cosmetologist friend who has everything, or if you’re a cosmetologist yourself who wants to be the absolute best in the business – pick up these 4 books today!

Plum Perfect Detects Your Color Profile and Recommends Makeup

Posted on: June 1st, 2012 by Heather No Comments

There’s a new website we just found that you makeup artists and makeup enthusiasts might enjoy called Plum Perfect. The service seems totally free right now, as far as I can tell. You simply upload a photo of yourself from a phone, computer or web URL – or you can choose from the site’s pool of models – and it detects your hair, skin, eyes and lip color. If it doesn’t quite nab it the first time, you can drag a box to specify which color is matches. Here’s what my colors came out to:

Plum Perfect - Photo Upload Color Selection

After that, it uses the photo to custom tailor makeup recommendations for you. From base products like foundation, concealers and powders to lip products like lipstick, lip gloss, lip liner and lip stain. Then, of course, there’s my favorite area to dabble creatively… eye makeup! Here are the initial recommendations it made for me:

Plum Perfect - Makeup Recommendations

They have a pretty solid selection of eye shadows and eyeliners so far from brands like Lancome, Smashbox, Urban Decay, Bare Escentuals and several more. You can sort, narrow and filter by a number of different criteria – color family, brand, price, coverage, formulation, lifestyle, texture and look.  I still wished for more, though. I did like that Plum Perfect allows you to create a “Wish List.” I don’t like to buy one product at a time online and make a bunch of small purchases on my card, so I’d rather make a list of things I love and buy them at once from time to time.

This seems a lot like ShoeDazzle, the Kim Kardashian enterprise that asks you several questions about your tastes in fashion and where you wear your clothes, and then each month the ShoeDazzle expert stylists customize a “Show Room” of shoes they think you’ll like. You can “heart” shoes you love, or make a purchase right away… and they also expanded to include jewelry, purses and other miscellaneous fashion items. I’m not going to lie… the price is right and some of those shoes are so funky that I’ve spent a paycheck or two on them. I can see myself getting sucked into doing that on Plum Perfect too.

Plum Perfect is still brand new, so right now the selection seems fairly limited, but the idea behind this site is incredibly cool and I can’t wait to see what comes of it. I think we all need an inspired splurge from time to time, and I think Plum Perfect has a lot of potential to be a springboard for makeup enthusiasts everywhere.

5 Ways to Turn Your Bathroom into a Personal Spa

Posted on: May 29th, 2012 by Sasha 2 Comments

At-Home Spa PamperingAhhhhhh… A day at the spa can be so relaxing and energizing.  The soft music, the lighting, and the pampering!  However, a couple hours spent at the spa can ring up a very un-zen-like price tag for the frugal at heart.  How can have the stress-relieving benefits in between full-fledged spa appointments without bringing the stress right back with a huge bill? Simple, create a spa at home. You’ll save time, money, gas, and you can enjoy being in the comfort of your own house.

Here are five great ways to achieve the spa-like experience in your own bathroom:

1)  Clear the clutter—To truly get away you must clear the clutter of your daily life.  How can you feel relaxed if your bathroom is a mess?  Take the time to put up bottles, makeup, and toothbrushes lying on the counter.  Give everything a good cleaning.  It won’t be your spa until you’ve got a clean, fresh appearance!

2) Love some lavender—Aromatherapy can have amazing benefits.  In fact, studies show that breathing in naturally sweet smells can lift your spirits.  Lavender is one of the most popular soothing scents because of its stress and anxiety relieving powers.  Lavender home sprays, soaps, shower gels, and oil diffusers are simple to find and won’t stress out your pocketbook.

3) Set the mood—Think about what you love most about the spa. Is it the soft lighting?  The relaxing music? The glow of candles?  Bring those into your own space!  Set up your iPod to play soft, easy-listening music.  Clean, white votive candles can be a super inexpensive purchase at your local craft store as well.

4) Set up spa stations—Whatever you usually go to the spa for is probably what you’ll want handy in your own homemade spa.  Is it a manicure? Do you go for a facial?  Make sure you have the products and tools ready to go in organized kits.  This way, when you’re ready to relax and give yourself a manicure you won’t spend 10 minutes gathering the things you need and stay in the relax zone!

5) Make it your sanctuary—What will truly make your bathroom feel more like a spa and not just your regular old bathroom are the little details.  The jar of bath salts, the fluffy robe hanging on the back of your door, soft rugs on the floor, etc.  Add these small but comforting touches to your bathroom to help bring the spa experience home sweet home.

I think we all know a day at the spa with trained beauty professionals pampering you is unbeatable, but you can get awfully close in-between salon and spa visits with these at-home spa and pampering tips. You deserve it. :)

5 Hair Treatments You Can Find in Your Fridge

Posted on: March 21st, 2012 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

Avocado Hair CareYour hair needs some serious help, but you don’t want to spend the money or don’t have the time to run to your salon for your favorite product. What do you do? Run to the kitchen! You can be pleasantly surprised by the beauty treatments that you can discover in your own trusty refrigerator. Check out these five affordable hair products from your fridge:

1. Eggs. No matter your hair type, an egg’s fats and proteins can do wonders! Massage an egg into your hair and let sit for about 20 minutes. Be sure to wash your hair with cool water. No one wants scrambled eggs in their hair!

2. Dairy Products. The lactic acid in dairy products such as sour cream, yogurt or milk can strip away dirt, grime, and air pollution that has built up on your locks. Try massaging sour cream or yogurt into you damp hair and let it sit for half an hour. Wash your hair thoroughly to see increased moisture and shine

3. Beer. Have fine, limp hair? Crack open a cold one. The yeast in the beer works to give your hair a little boost. Try pouring a flat beer into a spray bottle and spraying dry hair. The malty protein residue will give your hair extra volume as you style.

4. Honey. Have you abused your hair with the flat iron? Spent too much time in the summer sun? Reach for the honey. A humectant—something that retains moisture—honey can help you hair stay moisturized. We recommend mixing honey with a little olive oil to make it less difficult to wash out of your hair. Pure honey can put you in a sticky situation!

5. Avocados. It’s no wonder some of our favorite beauty products contain avocado. The fruit is packed with oils that smooth our hair. If you have naturally frizzy hair, or are dealing with high humidity, avocados can help! Mash one up, massage into your hair, and then rinse.

Who says you have to always use expensive, salon products? Sometimes the best treatment can be found in your fridge!

Vintage Meets Modern: Bridal Hair and Makeup Trends for 2012

Posted on: February 6th, 2012 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

2012-bridal-trends-ts88936774
If there’s a catchphrase that hairstylists and makeup artists could use to describe the trends they’re seeing in the brides of 2012, it would probably be “simple elegance.” This spring, romance is in the air, and vintage and modern are meshing, resulting in softer, more natural hairstyles, clean lines, and makeup looks inspired by the ’40s and ’50s.

Trendy Style Suggestions for Brides with Short Hair
The look of romance is still possible for brides who don’t want to go through the trouble of growing their hair out months before the big deal. A short style works fantastically with the elegant wedding hair accessories that are currently making big waves in bridal fashion. Experiment with a cage veil, headband or feathers for a chic look.

An updo is not out of the question for brides with short hair either. Hairstylists can add extensions to help you create the look you want.

Classic Style Trends for Brides with Long Hair
Look for styles that have been influenced by retro-vintage looks like the beehive. If you choose to wear your hair down, consider pin curls or loose waves. The formed, tightly quaffed princess bun is out, replaced by looser, less formal updos gathered lower down on the head or at the base of the neck.

Braids are also an updo to consider. They’re a great way to construct your hair’s shape and add unique twists on classic styles. Even the typical ponytail can be glamorous, wear it on one side using pretty hair clasps.

Trends in Bridal Accessories and Makeup
Hair accessories, hair accessories, hair accessories. We can’t say it enough – they’re kind of a big deal. In for bridal 2012 are bows, flowers (usually synthetic) in delicate pastel shades or ivory/white, and slides/hair bands, especially with pearl and crystal embellishments. Tiaras aren’t ranking so high this year, although veils are still popular. Consider pair one of the hot bridal hair accessories with a less elaborate veil to give layers to your look.

Bridal makeup for 2012 is featuring the traditional balance of emphasize eyes vs. emphasize mouth. There’s definitely demand for the Kim Kardashian-style look of smoky eyes, glowing skin and lush, nude lipgloss. On the flipside, you may want to go light and shimmery on the eyes and pair it with bold lips. Hot spring lip colors include berries, fuschia and reds while the trendy colors for fall and winter lip colors look to be earthier like wines and deeper berry tones.

Wedding Preparation Advice for the Bride-To-Be

  • Schedule the hair and makeup appointments for you as well as the wedding party well in advance.
  • Because your dress will significantly influence your hair and makeup choices, bring a picture of it with you to the stylist. This will assist you in creating the perfect look.
  • Do a trial run of your makeup and hairstyle for your wedding day no less than a week prior to your big day, that way if there is a problem you will have time to make different style decisions.

Wedding Day Beauty Tips

  • Have false eyelashes applied by your makeup artist. The lashes add fullness and make your eyes look bigger. However, be sure whoever applies your lashes has experience doing so otherwise this could be a difficult task. The last thing you want is for your eyes to be bloodshot because of false eyelash mishaps.
  • Having the ability to touch up your makeup on your wedding day is essential. Make sure you bring powder, mascara, lipstick and blush with you in the colors your artist used.
  • It is also a good idea to have a miniature package of tissues available, just in case your eyes start to water.
  • Remember to use waterproof mascara – even if you’re not a crier, just in case.
  • Carry a can of hairspray in your bag. Stay away from the pump sprays for your wedding day as they generally wet your hair, weighing it down. Aerosol hairspray does not have this characteristic.
  • If you are wearing an updo that uses bobby pins, be sure to bring a few extra in your bag. A comb would also be beneficial.

When all is said and done, you need to remember to choose a look you feel comfortable with, regardless of current trends. Don’t cave to pressure about “how a bride is supposed to look” – all that really matters is you feel happy and relaxed on your big day.

Winterize Your Skin, Hair and Nails

Posted on: January 5th, 2012 by Becca No Comments

People winterize their decks, right? They winterize their flower beds and tie sacks over their rose bushes. So why not take steps to protect your own body from the elements. The harsh winter weather can wreak havoc on your skin, hair, and nails. Don’t just sit back and suffer until spring. Try these tips and tricks for maximum protection this winter.

Turn Down the Temperature

  • Though a steamy shower helps to eliminate the bitter chill, the high temperatures will dry out your skin. The air already lacks moisture during the winter months, so your skin is thirsting for water.

Go Dirty

  • Cutting back on the number of showers as well as the amount of soap that you use will help your skin and hair stay soft and moisturized. Avoid soaps with sodium lauryl sulfate, which can strip away natural oils.

Rub it in

  • It is essential to moisturize your skin even more than usual during the dry winter months. Look for lotions with shea butter, botanical extracts and essential oils. Avoid synthetic fragrances, which can disrupt your hormone balance and do damage to your endocrine system. Keep travel sized bottles in your purse and gym bag.
  • For extremely dry or chaffed skin, try petroleum jelly, commonly known as Vaseline. Rub on a thick layer just before bed and throw some gloves on your hands to help seal in the moisture for overnight healing.
  • A nutritive cuticle cream can strengthen and protect cuticles from becoming overly dry.

Stay Hydrated

  • Dehydration is skin’s biggest enemy. Skin that is dry and thirsty is more prone to wrinkle and crack. Avoid dehydrating beverages, including caffeine and alcohol. If you must consume them, limit your intake and drink water in between. Try switching to hot tea instead of coffee to get a caffeine pick-me-up with less of the diuretic effect.

Swap Out Summertime Products

  • The shampoo, conditioner and styling products that you used during the warm, summer months were likely designed to remove chlorine and preventing humidity-induced frizz. Ideal for summer, these products can strip your hair, leaving it prone to breakage when the temperature drops.
  • Likewise, you should trade in your lightweight lotions, which do not offer adequate protection during the winter. Be sure to use hand soaps with conditioning and protecting agents that kill dangerous germs while preserving good bacteria.
  • Cut back on harsh exfoliating cleansers, as these can lead to dryness.

Invest in a Humidifier

  • Adding water back into the air can help your skin stay hydrated. Try
  • running a humidifier
  • at night in your bedroom to allow for healing while you sleep.

Slather on Sunscreen

  • Though the winter months are often overcast, the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays can still slip through the clouds. Without protective sunscreen, these ultraviolet rays penetrate the skin, causing damage and premature aging.

Take Your Vitamins

  • Provitamins B6 and B12 help your skin to stay soft and smooth. Calcium, which requires Vitamin D for absorption, strengthens your hair and nails.
  • Try to get the bulk of your vitamins through a nutrient-dense diet of whole, unprocessed food. However, with less exposure to sunlight and less fresh produce available, it may be necessary to supplement. Looks for an organic, whole food-based vitamin with high bioavailability.

Beauty Don’ts That Have Become Beauty Dos

Posted on: December 29th, 2011 by Becca No Comments

Don’t wear white after Labor Day. Always match your shoe and handbag color. Choose one or the other: a dramatic eye or dramatic lip. We’ve all heard these types of fashion rules and have added many of them to our own sense of style. But, while these fashion myths are widely practiced and stringently followed by many women, stylists are urging women to break free from the rules. If you’ve been letting outdated fashion and beauty rules hold you back, in 2012, redefine your style and break free from the mold to update your look for the new year.

Cosmetics
Perhaps one of the most widely followed beauty rules is the idea that women must choose between a dramatic eye or dramatic lip. One of the biggest trends for 2012 is a return to the Old Hollywood glamour of stars like Rita Hayworth and Veronica Lake. Modern-day starlets like Taylor Swift and Kristen Stewart have each been spotted pairing smokey eyes with bold, red lip color. Stylists recommend that ladies opt for a creamy and dewy complexion – sans bronzer or heavy blush – that will allow the lips and eyes to shine.

The smoky eye is being redefined with color – blue to be exact. While shades of blue may summon flashbacks from the ’80s, blue is certainly en vogue again. Navy, gray-blue and silvery blue tones can create an attention-catching eye that is great for an evening out on the town or for the office.

Other makeup don’ts that are becoming do’s? Things like, always wear lip liner with lipstick (pro makeup artists say just use a good lip brush to apply it instead); avoid red lipstick if you’re rocking red hair (it’s skin tone, not hair color, that makes all the difference); don’t put eyeliner underneath the eye (it’s been rumored to make eyes look smaller, but it can actually enhance the eye if you apply carefully and use a brown or taupe shade); and only apply blush to the apples of your cheeks (keeping the blush higher up can help contour and enhance your cheekbones).

Skin and Nails
If you are one of those women who likes to have a matching mani/pedi, break free from the mold and try mixing up the routine. If you’d like to become more creative with your nail color, try mixing colors but opt for the same finish. Or, try choosing from a blend of metallic colors.

And just because you’ve already got tan skin doesn’t mean you can’t get some mileage out of a good bronzer; you just have to be strategic about it. If you want to add a little more sun-kissed warmth to an olive complexion, apply bronzer to the hollows of your cheekbones or at the temples.

Hair
Even though most women wash their hair every day, they may be doing more harm than good. Over-washing your hair can cause the scalp to procedure excess oil and can subject your tress to the harsh sulfates in many shampoos. Break the once-a-day rule and trying washing your hair every other day, and you’ll increase your number of good hair days each week.

Delaying coloring your hair because you don’t want to start the endless cycle of root upkeep? The good news is that we’re past the point of pretending that we’ve all just got naturally gorgeous red or brown or blonde hair, and thanks to the ombre trend, it’s okay to show a little root these days. Using a mix of high- and lowlight shades will help add depth and avoid the “color line” when hair starts to grow out.

Beauty trends come in and out of style, but what we love about the industry these days is that the strict rules of yore are giving way to more flexible individuality. And beauty specialists are using their creative skills to turn so many “do nots” into fabulous “dos”.

Hot Hair Trend: The Best of Braids

Posted on: December 19th, 2011 by Becca No Comments

braid-hair-trend-ts82153398We touched on this in our holiday hair trends post, but it deserves a closer look: 2011 has been the boom year for the braid. Formerly regulated to the pigtails territory, the braid has bounced back and been integrated into a number of timeless, classy looks that look chic and effortless.

The Messy Bun-Braid
Taylor Swift wowed the crowd with her messy yet sophisticated bun-braid at the New York launch of her latest fragrance, Wonderstruck. This classy look is so easy that anyone can master it.

To pull off the bun-braid, begin by dividing your hair into three sections, with the outer side sections being smaller than the center section. Next, secure the middle and left sections into ponytails. Braid the right section, and wrap a band around the bottom. Repeat on the left side. You should now have two side braids with a ponytail in the middle.

At this point, you have several options for the center ponytail. You can opt for one loose braid or several smaller braids. Be sure to secure them at the bottom. Twist this center section of braided hair into a low bun. Allow it to be loose and slightly messy. Don’t worry about making it super tight. This helps to create a more romantic look. Finally, take the right braid and wrap it loosely around the messy bun. Do the same thing with the left braid. Secure your hair with bobby pins and spray as needed.

It is best to use clear, elastic bands at the bottom of the braids, as they blend in perfectly with your hair. You have a big more wiggle room with the bobby pins. Choose pins that match your hair color or add some flair with jeweled bobby pins that sparkle and shine.

Fish Ponytail Braid
This braid looks complicated but is actually quite simple. Start by securing your hair in a high ponytail. Next, divide your locks into two sections. Then take a small bundle of hair from the right, and pull it across to the middle. Do the same thing on the left side. Repeat this process all the way down the length of your ponytail.

The biggest challenge with this style is splitting the halves into smaller strands for braiding. Use a smoothing gel or paste to aid with this step.

Wraparound Headband Braid
This whimsical braid brings out your inner princess. You will need to separate your hair at your ear and running across the top of your head, brushing the top half toward your face and over to the side. This section is used to create the wraparound braid.

Braid your hair starting from your ear around the front of your head. Make sure that the braid is tight and close to your scalp. Using smaller strands of hair will help here. Once the braid reaches the opposite ear, secure it with bobby pins.

Bohemian Side Braid
Chic defines this versatile braid. Simply pull your locks to one side and braid away. You can use a fishtail or regular braid. Get fancy with multiple braids. The point is not to braid to tightly to maintain the “I didn’t spend much time getting ready” look.

Hot Hair Trend: Rockabilly and Victory Rolls

It’s the holiday season, which means a lot of people are looking for hairstyling ideas for Christmas parties, Hanukkah parties, New Year’s Eve parties…you get the idea. If you’re looking for a new way to do your hair for the holidays, it may be the perfect time to embrace the resurgence of rockabilly.

Rockabilly stems from the birth of rock n’ roll as it began to emerge from bluegrass and country music. Nowadays the term covers a whole subculture that takes its cues from the fashion and style and trends of the rebellious, edgy rockabilly era of the 40s and 50s. (That’s right: the 50s weren’t all June-Cleaver-pearls.) What does this mean for you? It means amazing vintage, pin-up style hair trends that you can make your own.

If you want to go all out rockabilly, overhaul your look with elements like short cropped bangs ala Bettie Page and either going root-to-tip black or adding bright colors to your hair like cherry red, either all over or in strategic places.

If, however, you just want to go rockabilly or vintage for an evening, try rocking victory rolls. rockabillie on YouTube has a great tutorial on how to achieve this look:

We have to say that this is we love about beauty and fashion and this whole industry. Fantastic trends come back into fashion, evolve with modern twists, and instead of forgetting all about our past, we build it on to develop future creativity.
