Vintage Meets Modern: Bridal Hair and Makeup Trends for 2012

Posted on: February 6th, 2012 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

2012-bridal-trends-ts88936774
If there’s a catchphrase that hairstylists and makeup artists could use to describe the trends they’re seeing in the brides of 2012, it would probably be “simple elegance.” This spring, romance is in the air, and vintage and modern are meshing, resulting in softer, more natural hairstyles, clean lines, and makeup looks inspired by the ’40s and ’50s.

Trendy Style Suggestions for Brides with Short Hair
The look of romance is still possible for brides who don’t want to go through the trouble of growing their hair out months before the big deal. A short style works fantastically with the elegant wedding hair accessories that are currently making big waves in bridal fashion. Experiment with a cage veil, headband or feathers for a chic look.

An updo is not out of the question for brides with short hair either. Hairstylists can add extensions to help you create the look you want.

Classic Style Trends for Brides with Long Hair
Look for styles that have been influenced by retro-vintage looks like the beehive. If you choose to wear your hair down, consider pin curls or loose waves. The formed, tightly quaffed princess bun is out, replaced by looser, less formal updos gathered lower down on the head or at the base of the neck.

Braids are also an updo to consider. They’re a great way to construct your hair’s shape and add unique twists on classic styles. Even the typical ponytail can be glamorous, wear it on one side using pretty hair clasps.

Trends in Bridal Accessories and Makeup
Hair accessories, hair accessories, hair accessories. We can’t say it enough – they’re kind of a big deal. In for bridal 2012 are bows, flowers (usually synthetic) in delicate pastel shades or ivory/white, and slides/hair bands, especially with pearl and crystal embellishments. Tiaras aren’t ranking so high this year, although veils are still popular. Consider pair one of the hot bridal hair accessories with a less elaborate veil to give layers to your look.

Bridal makeup for 2012 is featuring the traditional balance of emphasize eyes vs. emphasize mouth. There’s definitely demand for the Kim Kardashian-style look of smoky eyes, glowing skin and lush, nude lipgloss. On the flipside, you may want to go light and shimmery on the eyes and pair it with bold lips. Hot spring lip colors include berries, fuschia and reds while the trendy colors for fall and winter lip colors look to be earthier like wines and deeper berry tones.

Wedding Preparation Advice for the Bride-To-Be

  • Schedule the hair and makeup appointments for you as well as the wedding party well in advance.
  • Because your dress will significantly influence your hair and makeup choices, bring a picture of it with you to the stylist. This will assist you in creating the perfect look.
  • Do a trial run of your makeup and hairstyle for your wedding day no less than a week prior to your big day, that way if there is a problem you will have time to make different style decisions.

Wedding Day Beauty Tips

  • Have false eyelashes applied by your makeup artist. The lashes add fullness and make your eyes look bigger. However, be sure whoever applies your lashes has experience doing so otherwise this could be a difficult task. The last thing you want is for your eyes to be bloodshot because of false eyelash mishaps.
  • Having the ability to touch up your makeup on your wedding day is essential. Make sure you bring powder, mascara, lipstick and blush with you in the colors your artist used.
  • It is also a good idea to have a miniature package of tissues available, just in case your eyes start to water.
  • Remember to use waterproof mascara – even if you’re not a crier, just in case.
  • Carry a can of hairspray in your bag. Stay away from the pump sprays for your wedding day as they generally wet your hair, weighing it down. Aerosol hairspray does not have this characteristic.
  • If you are wearing an updo that uses bobby pins, be sure to bring a few extra in your bag. A comb would also be beneficial.

When all is said and done, you need to remember to choose a look you feel comfortable with, regardless of current trends. Don’t cave to pressure about “how a bride is supposed to look” – all that really matters is you feel happy and relaxed on your big day.

Winterize Your Skin, Hair and Nails

Posted on: January 5th, 2012 by Becca No Comments

People winterize their decks, right? They winterize their flower beds and tie sacks over their rose bushes. So why not take steps to protect your own body from the elements. The harsh winter weather can wreak havoc on your skin, hair, and nails. Don’t just sit back and suffer until spring. Try these tips and tricks for maximum protection this winter.

Turn Down the Temperature

  • Though a steamy shower helps to eliminate the bitter chill, the high temperatures will dry out your skin. The air already lacks moisture during the winter months, so your skin is thirsting for water.

Go Dirty

  • Cutting back on the number of showers as well as the amount of soap that you use will help your skin and hair stay soft and moisturized. Avoid soaps with sodium lauryl sulfate, which can strip away natural oils.

Rub it in

  • It is essential to moisturize your skin even more than usual during the dry winter months. Look for lotions with shea butter, botanical extracts and essential oils. Avoid synthetic fragrances, which can disrupt your hormone balance and do damage to your endocrine system. Keep travel sized bottles in your purse and gym bag.
  • For extremely dry or chaffed skin, try petroleum jelly, commonly known as Vaseline. Rub on a thick layer just before bed and throw some gloves on your hands to help seal in the moisture for overnight healing.
  • A nutritive cuticle cream can strengthen and protect cuticles from becoming overly dry.

Stay Hydrated

  • Dehydration is skin’s biggest enemy. Skin that is dry and thirsty is more prone to wrinkle and crack. Avoid dehydrating beverages, including caffeine and alcohol. If you must consume them, limit your intake and drink water in between. Try switching to hot tea instead of coffee to get a caffeine pick-me-up with less of the diuretic effect.

Swap Out Summertime Products

  • The shampoo, conditioner and styling products that you used during the warm, summer months were likely designed to remove chlorine and preventing humidity-induced frizz. Ideal for summer, these products can strip your hair, leaving it prone to breakage when the temperature drops.
  • Likewise, you should trade in your lightweight lotions, which do not offer adequate protection during the winter. Be sure to use hand soaps with conditioning and protecting agents that kill dangerous germs while preserving good bacteria.
  • Cut back on harsh exfoliating cleansers, as these can lead to dryness.

Invest in a Humidifier

  • Adding water back into the air can help your skin stay hydrated. Try
  • running a humidifier
  • at night in your bedroom to allow for healing while you sleep.

Slather on Sunscreen

  • Though the winter months are often overcast, the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays can still slip through the clouds. Without protective sunscreen, these ultraviolet rays penetrate the skin, causing damage and premature aging.

Take Your Vitamins

  • Provitamins B6 and B12 help your skin to stay soft and smooth. Calcium, which requires Vitamin D for absorption, strengthens your hair and nails.
  • Try to get the bulk of your vitamins through a nutrient-dense diet of whole, unprocessed food. However, with less exposure to sunlight and less fresh produce available, it may be necessary to supplement. Looks for an organic, whole food-based vitamin with high bioavailability.

Beauty Don’ts That Have Become Beauty Dos

Posted on: December 29th, 2011 by Becca No Comments

Don’t wear white after Labor Day. Always match your shoe and handbag color. Choose one or the other: a dramatic eye or dramatic lip. We’ve all heard these types of fashion rules and have added many of them to our own sense of style. But, while these fashion myths are widely practiced and stringently followed by many women, stylists are urging women to break free from the rules. If you’ve been letting outdated fashion and beauty rules hold you back, in 2012, redefine your style and break free from the mold to update your look for the new year.

Cosmetics
Perhaps one of the most widely followed beauty rules is the idea that women must choose between a dramatic eye or dramatic lip. One of the biggest trends for 2012 is a return to the Old Hollywood glamour of stars like Rita Hayworth and Veronica Lake. Modern-day starlets like Taylor Swift and Kristen Stewart have each been spotted pairing smokey eyes with bold, red lip color. Stylists recommend that ladies opt for a creamy and dewy complexion – sans bronzer or heavy blush – that will allow the lips and eyes to shine.

The smoky eye is being redefined with color – blue to be exact. While shades of blue may summon flashbacks from the ’80s, blue is certainly en vogue again. Navy, gray-blue and silvery blue tones can create an attention-catching eye that is great for an evening out on the town or for the office.

Other makeup don’ts that are becoming do’s? Things like, always wear lip liner with lipstick (pro makeup artists say just use a good lip brush to apply it instead); avoid red lipstick if you’re rocking red hair (it’s skin tone, not hair color, that makes all the difference); don’t put eyeliner underneath the eye (it’s been rumored to make eyes look smaller, but it can actually enhance the eye if you apply carefully and use a brown or taupe shade); and only apply blush to the apples of your cheeks (keeping the blush higher up can help contour and enhance your cheekbones).

Skin and Nails
If you are one of those women who likes to have a matching mani/pedi, break free from the mold and try mixing up the routine. If you’d like to become more creative with your nail color, try mixing colors but opt for the same finish. Or, try choosing from a blend of metallic colors.

And just because you’ve already got tan skin doesn’t mean you can’t get some mileage out of a good bronzer; you just have to be strategic about it. If you want to add a little more sun-kissed warmth to an olive complexion, apply bronzer to the hollows of your cheekbones or at the temples.

Hair
Even though most women wash their hair every day, they may be doing more harm than good. Over-washing your hair can cause the scalp to procedure excess oil and can subject your tress to the harsh sulfates in many shampoos. Break the once-a-day rule and trying washing your hair every other day, and you’ll increase your number of good hair days each week.

Delaying coloring your hair because you don’t want to start the endless cycle of root upkeep? The good news is that we’re past the point of pretending that we’ve all just got naturally gorgeous red or brown or blonde hair, and thanks to the ombre trend, it’s okay to show a little root these days. Using a mix of high- and lowlight shades will help add depth and avoid the “color line” when hair starts to grow out.

Beauty trends come in and out of style, but what we love about the industry these days is that the strict rules of yore are giving way to more flexible individuality. And beauty specialists are using their creative skills to turn so many “do nots” into fabulous “dos”.

Hot Hair Trend: The Best of Braids

Posted on: December 19th, 2011 by Becca No Comments

braid-hair-trend-ts82153398We touched on this in our holiday hair trends post, but it deserves a closer look: 2011 has been the boom year for the braid. Formerly regulated to the pigtails territory, the braid has bounced back and been integrated into a number of timeless, classy looks that look chic and effortless.

The Messy Bun-Braid
Taylor Swift wowed the crowd with her messy yet sophisticated bun-braid at the New York launch of her latest fragrance, Wonderstruck. This classy look is so easy that anyone can master it.

To pull off the bun-braid, begin by dividing your hair into three sections, with the outer side sections being smaller than the center section. Next, secure the middle and left sections into ponytails. Braid the right section, and wrap a band around the bottom. Repeat on the left side. You should now have two side braids with a ponytail in the middle.

At this point, you have several options for the center ponytail. You can opt for one loose braid or several smaller braids. Be sure to secure them at the bottom. Twist this center section of braided hair into a low bun. Allow it to be loose and slightly messy. Don’t worry about making it super tight. This helps to create a more romantic look. Finally, take the right braid and wrap it loosely around the messy bun. Do the same thing with the left braid. Secure your hair with bobby pins and spray as needed.

It is best to use clear, elastic bands at the bottom of the braids, as they blend in perfectly with your hair. You have a big more wiggle room with the bobby pins. Choose pins that match your hair color or add some flair with jeweled bobby pins that sparkle and shine.

Fish Ponytail Braid
This braid looks complicated but is actually quite simple. Start by securing your hair in a high ponytail. Next, divide your locks into two sections. Then take a small bundle of hair from the right, and pull it across to the middle. Do the same thing on the left side. Repeat this process all the way down the length of your ponytail.

The biggest challenge with this style is splitting the halves into smaller strands for braiding. Use a smoothing gel or paste to aid with this step.

Wraparound Headband Braid
This whimsical braid brings out your inner princess. You will need to separate your hair at your ear and running across the top of your head, brushing the top half toward your face and over to the side. This section is used to create the wraparound braid.

Braid your hair starting from your ear around the front of your head. Make sure that the braid is tight and close to your scalp. Using smaller strands of hair will help here. Once the braid reaches the opposite ear, secure it with bobby pins.

Bohemian Side Braid
Chic defines this versatile braid. Simply pull your locks to one side and braid away. You can use a fishtail or regular braid. Get fancy with multiple braids. The point is not to braid to tightly to maintain the “I didn’t spend much time getting ready” look.

Facial Masks

Strawberry Oat Supreme
Mash or purée about seven large strawberries. Add two teaspoons of honey, one tablespoon of whole oats, and one tablespoon of plain yogurt. Mix and apply to your face for about twenty minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Egg White Delight
Mix two egg whites with two tablespoons of plain yogurt. Apply the mixture to your face and leave on for five to ten minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Oily skin will benefit from two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar or cranberry juice. Mix ingredients and apply to your face, leaving the mask on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water to tighten your pores.

Hair Treatments

Avocado Authority
Combine one mashed avocado with half a cup of coconut milk and three teaspoons of olive oil. Warm the mixture on the stove. Be sure to massage it on your scalp as you apply it from root to end. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes and then shampoo as usual.

Cider Silky Shine

Beer Banana Booster
Boost your hair’s volume with a mashed banana blended with an egg, a tablespoon of honey, and half a cup of beer. You’ll want to soak in the tub for this one, as it requires at least an hour.

Skin Enhancers

Shea Sugar Scrub
Mix two to three cups of raw sugar with half a cup of jojoba oil, one tablespoon of shea butter, and four tablespoons of honey. Massage all over you body and rinse for an exfoliating and moisturizing experience.

Citrus Corn Refresher
Squeeze every drop of juice from an orange, and mix it with four tablespoons of cornmeal. Mix it into a paste and apply after cleansing your skin for an invigorating burst of refreshment.

Honey Lavender Milk Bath
Place three tablespoons of dried lavender flowers in a blender, and process until the leaves become powdery. Whisk one to two cups of whole milk cream with half a cup of honey, and then add the lavender powder. Pour half of the mixture under warm running water in the tub to soak away your stress. Cover and store the remaining mix in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Hot Hair Trend: Rockabilly and Victory Rolls

It’s the holiday season, which means a lot of people are looking for hairstyling ideas for Christmas parties, Hanukkah parties, New Year’s Eve parties…you get the idea. If you’re looking for a new way to do your hair for the holidays, it may be the perfect time to embrace the resurgence of rockabilly.

Rockabilly stems from the birth of rock n’ roll as it began to emerge from bluegrass and country music. Nowadays the term covers a whole subculture that takes its cues from the fashion and style and trends of the rebellious, edgy rockabilly era of the 40s and 50s. (That’s right: the 50s weren’t all June-Cleaver-pearls.) What does this mean for you? It means amazing vintage, pin-up style hair trends that you can make your own.

If you want to go all out rockabilly, overhaul your look with elements like short cropped bangs ala Bettie Page and either going root-to-tip black or adding bright colors to your hair like cherry red, either all over or in strategic places.

If, however, you just want to go rockabilly or vintage for an evening, try rocking victory rolls. rockabillie on YouTube has a great tutorial on how to achieve this look:

We have to say that this is we love about beauty and fashion and this whole industry. Fantastic trends come back into fashion, evolve with modern twists, and instead of forgetting all about our past, we build it on to develop future creativity.

Four Holiday Hairstyles to Make You Dazzle This Holiday Season

Posted on: December 7th, 2011 by Becca No Comments

holiday-hairstyles-ts200266068-001The holiday season is now in full swing, but is your hair ready for it? If you have a Palm Pilot full of winter festivities, start planning now for the holiday hairdo of your dreams. Whether you have been invited to a gala at the office, a charity fundraiser or an intimate party among friends, you want your hairstyle to send the message that you think the function is important. You can do that by taking the time to consider a unique style that will complement your dress, jewelery and all the rest of you.

Pretend You’re Madame de Pompadour
Have you ever been accused of thinking you’re Madame de Pompadour? With a holiday hairstyle highlighting sleek sides, you can show embrace the name. If you have thin hair, apply a lightweight gel to your hair, brush back several strands at a time and allow the air to dry it. For thicker manes, you may have to use molding paste to do the trick. Either way, you should brush through your full head of hair after it has dried and then use enough hairspray to keep the style in place.

Just Braid It
The time-honored braid can be a real lifesaver when you receive an invitation with little notice to plan something fancier. However, with the right type of braid, it doesn’t have to look like you got ready in a hurry. If you have a hair diffuser available, use it to dry your hair and give it a loosened look. To get the braid in place, grab hold of a chunk of hair to the left or right of your part and twist it into a braid. Once formed, pull your braid into a bun that is loose and fun in appearance, not like what your school librarian used to wear. You can also allow a few loose strands of hair to fall on either side if you want it to frame your face.

Bring Back the Bangs

holiday-hairstyles-ts82153262If you haven’t worn bangs in years, the holiday parties may be a good time to return to them. For the best bang results, go to your usual hairstylist and ask him or her to shape the hair above your eyebrows until it best conforms to your face. To accentuate your temporary bangs, have your stylist make them as straight as possible and then pull back the rest of your hair into a tight ponytail.

An Updo with a Twist

If you love the style of an updo but have already seen too many of them this season, don’t despair. There is always the alternative of having an updo on the side. To get this style started, pull your hair into a ponytail and separate it into two different sections. Next, take one section and wrap it around your ponytail’s base. You can move one section of hair clockwise while moving the other counter-clockwise at the same time. Use small bobby pins to keep the hair up and tucked in for the evening.

Unique Halloween Costumes for 2011

Posted on: October 21st, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

By Rebecca Coffindaffer

We kind of had to point out the extremely unique Halloween costumes in the video above because we’re kind of in awe of their creativity. Everyone wants to have that ingenious, eye-catching Halloween costume to wear to the party or out and about around town, right?

If you – like us – are feeling not up to the challenge of creating 4-legged stilt spirits, we have some other unique Halloween costume ideas for you to rock out this year.

A lot of the 2011 trends are coming from hot pop culture topics, like Charlie Sheen, vampires from Twilight, zombies from The Walking Dead… But we thought, why not get original by looking forward instead of back?

unique-snow-white-halloween-costume

Courtesy ewen and donabel via Flickr.

Snow White – Hollywood studios have not one, not two, but three Snow White movies planned for the next year. And they’re doing some different spins on the old fairytale, so you can choose to go classic like the Lily Collins/Julie Robert film or more Snow-White-Meets-Joan-of-Arc like the Kristen Stewart/Charlize Theron film.

Katniss Everdeen– Haven’t read The Hunger Games yet? It might be time to look it up. It’s the new Twilight when it comes to break out books, and the March movie adaptation is building up a lot of buzz. The sneak preview on this year’s MTV Movie Awards drew thousands of viewers alone, so don’t wait to catch up on this trend next year. Need a bonus? Katniss is a pretty easy look to pull off – some dark greens and browns, long braided hair, and a (fake) bow and arrow set. Done and done.

Fallen Angel – Angels are pretty standard, but you can put a different twist on the standard costume by going dark instead of heavenly. Fallen angels aren’t quite the new vampires just yet, but they’re picking up some pop culture steam, so get in on the trend now before it’s old hat.

Black Widow – Let the other gals go with Catwoman; break away from the ever popular Batman universe by grabbing a red wig and a black jumpsuit and becoming Black Widow from The Avengers. The big movie adaptation is out next summer, and everyone’s going to wish they had done the costume first.

Marilyn Monroe – Michele Williams is set to star in a new biopic about the Hollywood icon called My Week with

unique-marilyn-monroe-costume

Marilyn, and if it causes the kind of stir we think it will, expect a surge in Marilyn-mania. Some short blond curls, red lipstick and a vintage dress can put you ahead of the curb so when they’re all trying to be Marilyn next year, you’re ahead of the curve.

Keeping Up with the Kardashians – We couldn’t help ourselves with this one. Yeah, a Kim Kardashian costume isn’t that original, but we just love the idea of a whole crew of people joining forces and showing up as the whole Kardashians cast. Kim, Khloe, Kourtney – add Kris and Bruce Jenner. Heck, you can even throw in a Scott with his suit and slicked-back hair or Kris and Lamar in basketball jerseys. Extra points if you stage it as Kim’s over-the-top wedding or if you can act the parts and stage ridiculous reality TV show fights.

It can be tough to think up unique Halloween costume ideas that stand out from the old favorites or the current overhyped trends. We hope that we’ve given you some fresh new concepts to break out at the costume parties.

What about you? What are your favorite Halloween costume ideas?

Beauty picks for fall

Posted on: September 13th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-ts200266549Times change, seasons change and fashion does, too! (Thankfully – the ’90s can keep their neon mascara.) So, switching out your beauty regimen should coincide pretty easily with switching out your seasonal wardrobes. But how do you know how to make it work? We’ll tell you!

One thing that’s in style every season is a clear complexion and a good foundation. Keep moisturizing, exfoliating and fighting blemishes. And make sure you’re not using the same shade of foundation year-round. It can either make you look too pale in the summer or too dark in the winter. Not good! Once you’ve got the facial basics down, dive into the details:

Animal Prints
To go along with those fabulous leopard-print heels you’re wearing, try neutrals and browns on your eyes, lips and cheeks. The prints are bold and so should you be. You can also take a walk on the wild side with hand-painted or transfer prints for your nails. Rawr!

The Blues
For once, they’re a good thing. Cobalt blue is especially hot – think bright, bold true blue, almost like a sapphire. For a dramatic eye, try an opaque shade on your lids with some black mascara. Or, if you’re not quite that daring, mix it into your nail polish collection.

Heavy Metal
Step into the spotlight with metallic shades this fall. Sparkle with silver, glimmer with gold and be brilliant in bronze. Whether you go for a light layer or serious shimmer, these hues work perfectly on your eyes and nails.

Lash Attack
Eyelashes: the only facial hair a girl wants. And right now, the more and the bigger, the better. Mascara is no longer a one-size-fits-all product. Whether you need to lengthen, curl or thicken your lashes, there’s a tube out there for you. Take it one step further with some false lashes for an extra bold look.

Hair Beware
Volume is the name of the game when it comes to hairstyles this fall. Get pumped with volumizing shampoos, conditioners and styling products that will give you a lot of lift. And if your style starts to sag, bulk it back up with a dry shampoo.

Nail It
The fashion industry has brought back the ’30s with the appearance of half-moon manicures on the runway. Think either an unpainted or different-colored semicircle right above your cuticle. Perfect for two-tone animal prints, no?

There you have it – fall fashion for your face and nails! Day or night, simple or dramatic, these trends can put you on the cutting edge of seasonal beauty.
