Six Salon Red Flags

Posted on: March 24th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

salon1.    Not Having a License: All salons must have a license in order to practice and the license is usually posted on each hairstylists or esthetician’s desk. Not having a license or expired licenses is a big no-no. The salon is basically telling you their health standards are not up-to-date or their skills are not top-notch. Make sure a license is present!
2.    The Presence of Pets: Pets are cute but they bring up a flag for sanitary conditions. Pets should be kept at home not in a place of work.
3.    Un-kept Bathroom: We clean our own bathrooms frequently, salons should as well. Just like your sink at home may have dirt and hair clippings, scummy sinks can give you a strong vibe of how the salon views cleanliness. Unfilled paper towels and toilet paper are also huge signs of a low quality salon.
4.    Dirty Tools: The sanitation liquid is there on the salon desk for a reason! If all tools aren’t completely submerged in the cleansing liquid, speak up or rethink revisiting!
5.    Washing Your Hands: This one may be harder to catch but each specialist should wash their hands before working on their next client to prevent spreading of germs.
6.    The White Towel: Each client should get one towel during their visit, not to be used on any other client. Shared towels are not only disgusting but can spread unwanted bacteria.

Tickled Pink: Pantone declares ‘honeysuckle’ color of 2011

Posted on: February 8th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

visions_in_honeysuckle_pantone_color_of_the_year“Courageous.  Confident.  Vital. A brave new color, for a brave new world.  Let the bold spirit of Honeysuckle infuse you, lift you and carry you through the year.  It’s a color for every day—with nothing “everyday” about it.”  -Pantone’s website

Ready to jump on the Honeysuckle bandwagon after reading that?   Yep, we are, too.  Pantone, “the world’s authority on color,” announced last month that this lively reddish-pink hue was the 2011 color of the year, and we are ready to bring it to bloom this spring.

Honeysuckle, which some may at first think is yellow, is a bright pink that the company says is “encouraging and uplifting,” which seems appropriate amidst our country’s economic and political turmoil this year.

“In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits.  Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going—perfect to ward off the blues,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

Last year’s color, turquoise, is so 2010.  Update your beauty and fashion routine with some Honeysuckle!

1)    On your nails— Wearing honeysuckle on your nails is a simple and temporary way to try out the trend.  Use Sinful Colors’ Cream Pink.

How To Get Clearer Skin

Posted on: December 14th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-schools-clear-skinWe’re all guilty of doing it.  Late night studying, girls’ nights out and even a long stressful day at work can all cause us to blow off washing our face to opt for passing out in bed instead.  Sometimes when we can hardly keep our eyes open, we don’t prioritize washing our face before bed.  But how essential is this nightly ritual? Can’t your skin wait a few hours until morning?

Well, if you want to avoid pimples, getting sick, looking older than you are and dull skin tone, you better march yourself to your bathroom sink each night.

Laurie Polis, MD, of WebMD magazine explains that night is a time of replenishment for your skin.  Polis says at night there’s an increased amount of blood flow to your skin and many metabolic processes going on.  Polis says you should consider all the gross stuff that has settled on your face throughout the day—makeup, bacteria, sweat, pollution, dirt—just to name a few. It’s extremely important for your skin’s health to wash off the environmental debris of the day and give it a rest from possible irritants.

It may seem commonsense, but washing your face is the best way to keep you skin fresh, clear and glowing.  By not washing your face each night you can increase your chances of acne.  During the night, the skin produces oil.  If your face is covered with dirt, grime and makeup, there’s no way for the oil to escape which causes clogged pores.  Also, nighttime is important for your skin’s rejuvenation.  Skin needs time to breathe and soak in moisturizer and anti-aging products for it to look bright and youthful.

If you want to stay healthy you should be motivated to wash you face every night.  With a day of sweat and grime on your face, your skin is playing host to a plethora of bacteria waiting to make its move at night.   Wash your face can get rid of potential cold or flu germs.  Also, leaving on makeup can cause major damage and infection to your eyes.  All the eye shadow and sparkly eyeliner you forget to wash off will move into your eye at night creating a perfect storm for irritations and infections such as pink eye.

So, no matter how exhausted you are at night, remember how important it is to take an extra five minutes to wash your face. A great way to guarantee you’ll at least do something, is to invest in a box of face wipes, which although not ideal, is better than nothing.   You’ll be happy you avoided pimples and pink eye, and your 15-years-from-now -self will thank you for the youthful looking skin!  If you are really excited about skin, consider a career as an esthetician. Lawsuits Against Accutane for its Acne Treatment

Posted on: November 16th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-schools-accutaneIf you were like the average teenager then you probably had some troubles with acne during high school, right? You might have gone to the dermatologist and gotten some ointment or maybe you just bought acne soaps like the Neutrogena products at your local grocer.

Well, for those of you who weren’t the average teen, you might have had a case of severe acne. Waking up every morning hoping that when you’d looked in the mirror it would all just be gone, but it never was. If you suffered from disfiguring or scarring acne you probably tried everything and talked with everyone to find a way to help alleviate the breakouts. Ultimately, you probably tried Accutane.

Accutane was the last resort against the pimple plagued army. It was the last straw, an effort to bring out the big guns, the heavy hitter. Accutane’s effectiveness worked by reducing the amount of oil released by the oil glands in your skin – helping your skin renew itself as a quicker rate. It was like a miracle drug – suppressing you’re acne but causing potential side effects. For starters it severely dried your skin out and left your face with an unappealing red glow to it. More severe side effects included child birth defects during pregnancy and possible depression.

But those were just possibilities and at the time all you cared about was that your skin was clearing up. Accutane worked and despite all its side effects, you couldn’t have been happier, right?

Well, fast-forward to recent news and Accutane is back in the headlines making noise despite being taken off the market in 2009, but this time with even more serious side effects that weren’t addressed the first time you took it. The latest stir has linked Accutane with several cases of bowel risks including Inflammatory Bowel Disease like Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease include:
• Vomiting
• Abdominal cramping and pain
• Diarrhea
• Weight loss
• Bleeding of your intestines
• Rectal bleeding
• Ulcers

If you or someone you know has taken Accutane and is currently suffering or has suffered from any of the above bowel diseases or if you think you might have similar symptoms then you might have a law suit on your hands. Contact your local doctor for any further questions regarding Inflammatory Bowel Disease and your local lawyer if you think you may have a case on your hands.

Three Great Pumpkin Facial Recipes for Radiant Skin

Posted on: October 14th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

4060748237_aaa529b3acIt seems like every fall more and more uses for pumpkins come into play. If it’s not something new you can eat, it’s something you can drink or in this case something you can apply on your face!

Pumpkins can in fact be used in several natural beauty remedies as skin treatments. As it turns out, pumpkins, whether you want to classify them as fruits (they have seeds) or vegetables (they are a member of the squash family) are full of vitamin C and caroteniods, such as beta carotene which are powerful anti-oxidants that help neutralized skin damage.

Here are some great pumpkin recipes, including a pumpkin face mask, that Narine Nikogosian, author of the book Return to Beauty: Old-World Recipes for Great Radiant Skin provides for healthy looking skin:

Harvest Cleanser
Good for: Normal-to-oily skin
Ingredients: 1 pumpkin slice, 1/4 cup milk
Preparation: Remove the skin and seeds from the pumpkin, then slice and cut it into cubes. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat the pumpkin cubes until they are soft. In a small bowl, mash the pumpkin. In a second small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the mashed pumpkin with the milk. Add 1/4 cup of water and mix well.
Application: Pour a small amount of the mixture onto a clean wet washcloth or sponge. Gently wash your face with this in the morning and evening. Rinse with warm water.

Pumpkin Happy Face Mask
Good for: Dry skin
Ingredients: 1 pumpkin wedge, 1 tablespoon olive oil
Preparation: Remove the rind and chop up the pumpkin into 10 cubes. Boil the pumpkin cubes in water for 10 minutes, drain, then mash them and let cool. Combine 2 tablespoons of mashed pumpkin with the oil and mix well.
Application: Gently apply this to your face and neck and relax for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water, then apply your moisturizer.

Pumpkin Eye Mask
Good for: Anyone
Ingredients: 1 pumpkin slice, 1 teaspoon honey
Preparation: Peel and seed a slice of pumpkin. Cook it in 2 cups of water until soft, then mash it and add 1 teaspoon of honey.
Application: Put the mixture inside clean gauze, then place over your eyes and relax for 20 minutes.

The 5 Most Popular Esthetic Myths Debunked

Posted on: July 8th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 2 Comments

beauty-school-directory-skin-myths3It takes a lot to understand the human skin and its complexities. Because appearance is such a staple in society, many people always seemingly claim to have “the know” when it comes to skin and its care. From this idea, many myths have blanketed the realities of esthetically ideal skin, and it’s the time that the record is set straight. For instance, how bad really is fast food and sunshine for your face? Below is a list of five popular myths about esthetics, followed by the facts! Here we go:

Myth 1: Eating greasy foods will cause acne breakouts.
This is more of a motherly tale used by moms across the world to try to prevent their children from eating badly. There is no scientific evidence that consuming greasy foods cause or worsen acne; however, working in a greasy environment, such as a fast food restaurant, may worsen acne because the skin is exposed to airborne fried grease.

Myth 2: The sun doesn’t alleviate acne and redness.
The sun’s ultraviolet rays do, in fact, kill acne bacteria and help dry up acne breakouts. Furthermore, redness of acne can be alleviated or hidden by tanning; however, these same sun rays that help tan and hide acne are also responsible for long-term skin damage. So the sun is really your best friend and worst enemy. Tan and have good-looking skin now, but pay the price later with possible skin cancer and premature aging down the line. There are far better – and much safer – ways of dealing with acne breakouts than using the sun’s rays for help.

Myth 3: Natural beauty products are less prone to create skin breakouts than artificial products.
No scientific proof has been shown regarding natural beauty products having a lesser chance to cause breakouts than synthetic products. In reality, lots of natural skin care products possess natural oils that may be broken down in the follicle upon application, resulting in fatty acids, many which are known to cause breakouts.

Myth 4: Primary causes of wrinkles are attributed to skin dryness and dehydration.
Although skin dryness and dehydration certainly can worsen the appearance of wrinkles and aged skin, they aren’t the primary causes. Rather, wrinkles main contributors are caused by facial expressions and cumulative sun exposure.

Application of a daily hydrating-agent moisturizer that also contains broad-spectrum sunscreen is a terrific method to alleviate the appearance of wrinkles and the daily exposure that causes wrinkle formation.

Myth 5: Allergic reactions are the leading type of reaction caused by skin care products.
Actually, the number one type of reaction from skin care products are irritant reactions, commonly caused by over-exfoliation – damaging the top of the skin creating inflammation and dehydration. Overusing foaming-type cleansers are primary catalysts of irritant reactions.

Allergic reactions typically occur only when the user has a strong immune reaction to the product and/or a certain ingredient in the product.

Setting the record straight is difficult when everyone supposedly knows what’s best. Hopefully now, you’ll be the one who truly knows the difference between myth and reality. Make it your duty – spread the word to keeping elegant skin.
