Make Makeup Work with the New Hair Hue

Posted on: January 14th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

So, it’s the start of a new year. A new decade, even! And you or your clients may be feeling a little complacent with the same old style. That means it’s time to shake things up!

As I’ve learned over the years, changing my hair color every once in a while can be a fun, relatively easy way to get a new look and to get un-bored with my current hair situation. But some stylists recommend that if you’re making a fairly drastic color change, you’ll need to adjust your makeup routine as well.

As any redhead, blonde or brunette will tell you, make up that works on one girl is not guaranteed to look awesome on everyone. So, here’s a quick guide that you can either use for yourself, or pass on to your clients, that can offer some good makeup and hair matching advice:

For going from blond to brunette: Darker locks change the contrast between the skin and hair and can make the skin look more easily washed out. To keep your face looking vibrant next to your darkened locks, look for products with light-reflecting elements. Peach and coral colors on your skin can be a great way to make your face look warmer.

For going from brunette to blond: Not all blondes can handle the heavier, darker makeup looks that brunettes can get away with. Anything too bold or intense might look harsher on a blonde. Instead, try soft muted colors like pale pinks, mauve-y browns, or nudes.

For going to red or reddish brown: Our eyes are trained to associate harmony and similarity in colors with beauty, so when switching to a hair color in the auburn family, look for makeup products with similar hues. Avoid cool colors like blues and purples, and stick with warm shades like champagne, tawny or even soft grays.

On the Hunt for the Best Mascara

Posted on: February 4th, 2009 by Beauty Schools Directory 2 Comments

Like most women, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect mascara since I was, oh, about 13 years old. And, man, have I run the gamut! From drug store finds promising big bang for my bucks to the more expensive over-the-makeup-counter stuff, I think I’ve tried it all to get those luscious lashes I crave. Maybe some of you aspiring makeup artists attending makeup artist classes know the answer?

I’ve talked to my girlfriends about the latest products and I’ve talked to mom’s friends about the brands with staying power – still, this holy grail of makeup products has managed to elude me!

So, I recently decided to hit up the wonderful Web for more info. According to my research (which consisted of quite a fair amount of Googling) it seems that Lancome DEFINCILS is the celebrated champion. The overwhelming majority of sites lauded this mascara for having the best lengthening, volumizing and staying power around.

It comes in 4 shades: black; brown; deep brown and navy. And, it’s available at most makeup retail stores. The price of this perfection? A whopping $24. It seems a little pricey for something I have to restock every 3 months, but I’m thinking it could be worth it since mascara is my one must-wear product (if I don’t wear it, people ask me whether I’m tired or sick all day.)

When it came to less expensive mascaras, my research didn’t come up with an obvious winner. However, Maybelline Great Lash (the one that comes in the hot pink and neon green tube) and Cover Girl LashBlast both came up a bit more often than others.

So, it seems that the hunt for the perfect bargain mascara continues. In the meantime, I’m going to try Lancome DEFINCILS out. I’ll let you know how it goes.

How to Keep Your Up Do From Becoming an Uh Oh

Posted on: January 28th, 2009 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

What do most women want when it comes to big events? From homecoming, to prom to their wedding day, the inevitable answer is: FABULOUS hair. Of course, we usually want pretty dresses, amazing shoes and flawless makeup, too. But, without the perfect hair style to tie it all together, a great look can easily become a great big flop.

Want to know the secret to an amazing up do? You may be shocked at the answer. The key to creating a gorgeous up do is dirty hair. It may seem counter-intuitive, but the grubbier your hair is, the better it will hold in place. Ask the professionals who have attended hair design school! They’ll tell you.

Clean hair can actually be incredibly difficult to work with and usually requires the addition of LOADS of product. So, if you’re about to get your hair swept up and pinned down, make sure to stay clear of shampoo for at least 2 days before the big event to give your natural oils some time to build up.

Straight Hair in 6 Easy Steps

Posted on: January 9th, 2009 by Beauty Schools Directory 2 Comments

If you’ve been blessed with naturally straight hair, consider yourself lucky. In fact, you can kick your curling iron to the curb, because long, straight locks are in. But, if your hair is of the wavy, curly or frizzy variety, don’t fret.

You can still get this hot look by following these 6 steps:

1. Wash it. Make sure your hair is clean when you start the straightening process, or you could end up with oily, stringy looking hair instead of the voluminous shiny tresses you’re trying to achieve.

2. Partially dry it. Instead of completely drying your hair, use a wide toothed comb and get rid of the excess water.

3. Add volumizer. When hair is still slightly damp, add mouse or another volumizer to give your hair more body. Apply from root to tip of hair.

4. Blow dry. Using a large round brush, blow dry your hair from root to tip. Don’t tug on your hair, but try to keep a bit of tension with your brush. Follow the motion of your brush with the dryer until your hair is completely dry.

5. Flat iron. Section your hair and flat iron your hair from root to tip.

6. Finish your look. Use a dime-sized amount of gloss to de-frizz your hair. This step will help manage any unruly fly aways and give your hair a pretty shine.

Fight Dry Skin with Natural Remedies

Posted on: December 29th, 2008 by Beauty Schools Directory 4 Comments

Now that winter has settled into most of the United States the way my younger sister settles in for America’s Next Top Model marathons, many of us are facing a common problem: dry skin. And, if you’re like me, you’ve tried every intense hand lotion, body lotion and Vaseline-like remedy on the market to try and combat it. So, this year I decided to research some alternative winter skin care regimens.

Here are a few natural steps you can take toward maintaining healthy, glowing skin – even during January.

Drink plenty of water. Staying well-hydrated will help keep your skin looking fresh and feeling healthy.

Exfoliate. Getting rid of the layers of old, dead skin cells can help reveal the brand new, healthy skin underneath. To make a natural exfoliant, just mix some sugar with honey and water (or sea salt and olive oil) and rub into skin using small circles.

Eat fatty acids. Foods like avocado, nuts and olives contain omega 3’s which promote cell growth, keeping skin healthy and younger looking.

Topical treatments. Omega 3’s can also work when rubbed onto the skin. Make a face mask out of mashed avocado and let some fatty acids sink into your skin.

Honey treatments. Combine a small dollop of honey and water and cover your face. A small amount of honey won’t make your face sticky, but its natural antioxidants and moisturizers will keep your face free from patches of dry skin.

I know there are plenty of others – these are just the ones I’ve tried so far. Do you have any natural home remedies for dry skin? Right now, I’m looking for something that works specifically for dry, cracked hands. I’ll keep you posted on any great discoveries.

Train for cosmetology in the school of hard knocks

Posted on: December 8th, 2008 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

I’ll be honest. I don’t go to salons. It’s not that I don’t have the money. I just spend it on things like beer, video games, motorcycles and …literature. I’m a guy, but, my girlfriend is a veteran merchandiser in an upscale salon. She knows beauty. She talks about her work all the time, and (more specifically) gabs about her co-workers. “This girl said that to this girl who did that who you would not believe went out with that girl’s man,” and so on. More plots and characters inhabit her work day than the entire cast and catalog of The Sopranos.

Like any normal guy who has to listen to his girl blabber on and on, I began to wonder, “When will she ever tell me an interesting story?” So, I decided to ask female friends of my own about their uncomfortable, gasp-inducing or awful experiences in today’s modern salon. Some are customers and some are professionals with full cosmetology licenses.

Attention to detail is important
A lady came into the salon and sat at this station next to me while I was getting a cut. She requested that 1/2″ be taken off her hair all the way around. The stylist cut her hair and the lady left seemingly happy. Twenty minutes later she marched right back into the salon, walked past me to the next stylist’s station, screamed at her, picked her shears up with just the blades sticking out and attempted to stab the stylist in the head. By the time we had her subdued, the stylist had gashes on her chest and some on her neck. The manager who broke up the altercation needed stitches in both hands.

My stylist told me the result of the court trial. Even with a verdict for assault with a deadly weapon, she was only given 50 hours of community service.

The “butch look” is in, trust me.
A woman came into my salon and requested a perm. But she had bleached every last pigment out of her hair, which was damaged beyond belief. I advised her that if I were to perm her hair, each and every strand of hair would come out with the rod, right down to the root. She got defensive and said that what I described wouldn’t happen. She “knows her hair” better than me. “Fine,” I think. The customer is always right and she gets what she wants.

Just to cover my butt, I wrote into the services receipt stating that I advised against a perm for this client and any and all damage resulting is her responsibility. She inspected it, signed it and we proceeded. One hour later, she had a crispy butch blonde cut and I had a very unhappy customer. She left without paying, threatening to sue. We never heard from her again.

Bag of tricks
I worked in the tanning area of a day spa for a few years. One of my new male customers came up to the desk a bit tipsy, and carrying a Crown Royal brand whiskey bag. I thought, “Did he finish that whole thing in the car?” but went ahead and put him in a tanning room. So 30 minutes pass, but he’s still locked in his room. At 45 minutes, I’m knocking loudly on the door, but still nothing. I open the door, and there he is, passed out on the tanning bed with headphones on. Then I notice why he brought the Crown Royal bag with him. I guess you could say he liked the “tan line-free” look.

Belts and Buckles: Bling for Your Waistline

Posted on: December 1st, 2008 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

These days, it seems like belts are doing a whole lot more than holding up pants. Whether they’re chunky chains slung around the hips or basic black with a fabulous buckle worn inches above the waistline, belts are everywhere. And, they’re certainly more about fashion than function.

From the red carpet to your local super market, belts are back with a bang. Here are a few reasons why they’re everywhere:

Instant Figure. Wearing a belt with a dress, over a sweater or with a skirt can help you create the illusion of an hour glass figure by drawing attention to the smallest part of your body.

Great Curves. Wearing a simple, thin belt directly below the bust can give you a stylish empire waistline and give you instant curves.

Fashion that Pops. Not feeling your plain Jane outfit? Just add a brightly colored or metallic belt and transform your look with a splash of fashion-forward pizzazz.

Why not? Belts are a fun, easy way to amp up your wardrobe. Instead of dropping bundles of cash on a new outfit, get a great new belt and transform your look instantly.

I found this video on you tube that might give you a couple of cute ways to wear belts. They drop a few designers names as examples, but you certainly don’t have to spend tons of money to create the looks they suggest.

Step this way

As the temperature drops, it seems like the number of invites to parties goes up… well, at least for the holiday season it seems that way. The mixers, cocktail parties and holiday shindigs seem endless and if you want to look your best, put your best foot forward – literally.

If your feet are already looking tired and tried then this blog is just for you! I found a great blog that offers advice to help spruce up your feet just in time for the holidays! Try these little nuggets and not only will your feet thank you, people will want to know how you keep your toes looking their best.

Wear the right shoes. Take the time to pick out shoes or heels that are comfortable and properly fit your foot. It never hurts to ask a sales associate to check your size. Sometimes our feet can change just like our waistlines.
Rub it in! Treat yourself to a pedicure or a foot massage. This can help with corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, and other foot ailments that can make your feet hurt.
Practice good hygiene. Keep your feet clean and try to help eliminate your risk of developing fungal issues.
Give it a rest! At the end of the day take off your shoes, prop your feet up, and give them a rest. Stretch them out and let them have a little room to breathe.
Consult your doctor. Never be afraid to seek medical help for any foot ailment that you may have. Taking care of the problem early can make all the difference in your ability to ‘kick up your heels.’

Try Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriguez with Kristin Ohlson

For many American women it can be hard to imagine anyone more culturally different than the women of Kabul, Afghanistan. It’s tempting to ask questions along the lines of, “Do women even need hairstyling or makeup in Kabul? I’m pretty sure they just wear full-length robes and veils every day.”

But in 2002, Deborah Rodriguez, an American hairstylist from Michigan, learned much more about what Afghanistan has to offer when she moved to Kabul, the nation’s capital. Her original mission was to help out with humanitarian and war-relief efforts in the country (this was just after the Taliban was forced to leave Afghanistan). But she soon learned that just like doctors, teachers and other respected professionals, she had her own unique talents to offer the citizens of Kabul—her cosmetology talents!

Deborah worked for years with women in Kabul to establish the country’s first modern beauty school, and she documents her journey and her time spent there in Kabul Beauty School (Random House 2007). In the book, readers will be introduced to some of the most culturally important traditions in Afghanistan, and will probably be surprised at how much some of these traditions rely on hairstyling and makeup!

Deborah’s true account of her experience in Afghanistan is a great read for anyone interested in cosmetology practices and their traditions. It turns out, women in Afghanistan may not be that different after all. Maybe you’ll even learn how to begin your own career path of a humanitarian-cosmetologist-extraordinaire!
