It’s MY Education: Help Us Stop the Government from Seizing Educational Freedom

Posted on: October 12th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

cosmetology-and-career-college-educationWe were always taught that education matters. We were always told to try our hardest, and we would succeed in achieving our dreams. A country that sings the songs of golden opportunities and new hopes is displaying an unfair hypocrisy against young Americans, causing them to rethink if their dreams can still be obtainable.  The U.S Department of Education’s proposed “gainful employment” rule could potentially eliminate federal financial funding for cosmetology and career colleges. The rule, disguised as a way to make sure students don’t take on too much debt, is actually halting aspirations and career ambitions by penalizing students for selecting a career path that may be different from their peers. A career path that according to the U.S. Department of Labor educates over three million students a year.

If passed, the gainful employment rule will give the federal government control over the career choices of our future Americans, inhibiting thousands of students from receiving a cosmetology or for-profit education. But it doesn’t stop there. For many, education offered by cosmetology and career schools is needed for personal growth, for employment and as a way to improve one’s current conditions. Without this education, thousand of American’s will have limited opportunities available.

Three Things You Should Know About Sunless Tanning Lotions

Posted on: July 16th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 4 Comments

beautyschoolsdirectory-sunless-tanningNow that we’re well into summer, I’m definitely feeling that tug of longing to have beautifully bronzed skin.

But since I don’t feel like turning into a toasty lobster, I’ve been lathering on the sunscreen and staying in the shade a little bit more this year. Does this mean I’ll have to sacrifice that bronze glow for my skin? According to the sunless tanning lotion industry, the answer is… Absolutely not!

But before I go running for the lotion bottles, let’s clear up some sunless tanning lotion myths.

1. Newly-developed ingredients can change the effectiveness of sunless tanners.

Nope. Almost all sunless tanners out there today contain the same two active ingredients that they have for years: DHA (or dihydroxyacetone) and erythrulose. Almost all other ingredients are considered moisturizers, fragrances or just plain marketing gimmicks.

2. Strategically layering and shading sunless tanners can have a slimming effect.

Hmm. This one is tricky. If you’re strictly going for a slimming effect in photographs and you have very advanced airbrushing skills, go for it! But in real life? If you saw a lady walking down the street with dark streaks on the outside of her thighs, chances are you would notice that, and not necessarily in a good way. For the real world, you’ll probably want to stick to one shade of bronze only.

3. Religiously exfoliating your skin makes your bronze glow last and last.

That depends on who you ask. Many skin experts say exfoliating probably helps your tan-from-a-bottle look better and last longer. However, some sunless tanner manufacturers are perpetuating the myth that a sunless tan will last a week or longer. Unfortunately, all the exfoliating in the world won’t make that a reality. At most, sunless tans will last between five and seven days. Then, you’ll have to reapply.

Now, it’s time to go forth and look like a bronze beauty! Have any sunless tanner stories to share (good or bad)? We would love to hear them!

Tennis Star Serena Williams Goes to Beauty School!

Posted on: February 18th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

serena-1-croppedTennis super star Serena Williams has accomplished pretty much every thing a tennis player dreams of. She’s won over $30 Million in prize money, Olympic Gold Medals and more titles than I can count! And let’s not forget her partnership with Mission Skincare, and  her uber-popular line of handbags, jewelry and clothing sold on HSN. Once a girl has accomplished all that, what’s left for her to do? Go to beauty school, that’s what!

Serena recently posted an entry on her blog sharing that she’s enrolled in a Florida nail tech school near her home. What made her decide to enroll? Her love of a good mani/pedi!

“No one likes getting their nails done more than I do.  As a matter of fact I go every 4 days to get a manicure and every 7 days for a pedicure. So, I had a brilliant idea to get certified to be a nail tech. Besides the fact that I am coming out with a nail collection from a company called HairTech, I thought “Serena this is a no brainer.”  Immediately after I came home from the Australian Open I researched some schools and enrolled in a course that allowed me to complete 240 hours (that’s what u have to do to get certified at least in Fla.) at my own pace. 240 hours may seem like a lot, but I intend on completing it within the year.”

Serena snapped some pics of herself and her classmates on their first day at nail tech school. Take a look!

“Today was my first day and boy was I excited! When I got there, they immediately had us do pedicures on each other. I wanted to make sure I did it just the way the real salons do it, so I began with asking the girl if she wanted any water to drink. I was so relieved when she said no, because honestly, I didn’t have any to give her. Then I asked her to pick a color and she said French!! I’ve never done french, but I was determined to not butcher it.  Luckily, thanks to my weekly pedicures I took my time and it came out great. I know it wasn’t just me thinking I did good because all of the other girls kept asking if I had done this before. They thought I was on that show called “I get that a lot!”

“My next class is in a few days, but I’ll keep you guys posted on my progress. Don’t be surprised if you hear about a part time job I’ve picked up at a local nail salon.”

How awesome is that?! What do you think about Serena’s decision to go to beauty school? How would you react if a celeb turned up in your cosmetology school class? Let’s hear it!

East Meets West: Japanese Products Enhance American Beauty Culture

Posted on: February 16th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

japanese-beauty-postWestern beauty ideals have undeniably influenced Japanese culture, and as a result the Japanese beauty industry has turned out some strange contraptions. Big eye contacts promise to enlarge your pupils for the appearance of wider eyes, collagen marshmallows are a tasty alternative to painful injections, and “F Cup Cookies” claim to significantly increase a woman’s bust. Although these products may seem a little wacky, Japanese beauty trends have begun to make an appearance in Western society. Here are a few innovations to watch for: Fish Pedicure: If the thought of fish nibbling on your toes gives you the creeps, this procedure may not be for you. In many of their beauty treatments, the Japanese look to nature to cure and treat the body. In this case, dunking your feet in a pool of Gama Rufa (more commonly known as “doctor fish”) results in smooth skin. But don’t worry. Those who have braved the experience claim that the procedure is painless and the results are unparalleled. Nightingale Dropping Face Cream: The idea of rubbing bird feces on one’s face doesn’t appeal to most, but consider the resulting “brightened skin” promised by the product “Uguisno No Fun”. While Western society seems to prefer peels and rubs to remove skin, the Japanese aim to protect this top layer of skin through application of this product. While you may not want to go as far as using bird poop in place of your nightly crème, this concept of protection is something to consider. Sun Chlorella Supplements: Sun Chlorella is a superfood consisting of dried algae packed with vitamins, minerals and proteins. It has been used for years and supposedly encourages cell renewal for healthy, beautiful skin, hair, and nails. Considering Japanese women don’t seem to age, there may be something to be said about the power of algae. The influence of Japanese beauty products will inevitably push our own Western culture to grow and innovate. Now is the time to begin creating!

Posted on: February 11th, 2009 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

Today, pursuing a massage therapy career isn’t just for empathetic people who want to help others – it’s for business-savvy professionals who want to tap into one of today’s fastest growing industries.

There are already more than 118, 000 massage therapy professionals practicing in America – a number that’s projected to grow by 20% within the next decade. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistic’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment for massage therapists is expected to increase faster than average in the coming years.

Massage therapy is expected to grow as a result of:

• Increased interest in alternative medicine and holistic healing
• Healthcare providers who are beginning to recognize and accept massage therapy as legitimate treatment and preventative measure
• Insurance companies that are beginning to cover massage treatment
• Its increasing use as a supplement to conventional treatment of muscle problems, sickness, diseases and stress-related health problems
• More employee friendly workplaces that provide professional in-office seated massages
• Older citizens, who tend to experience great health benefits from massage, make up America’s most rapidly growing segment of population.
• Young adults who present the largest demand for massage are likely to continue to enjoy its benefits in the years to come

Are you interested in pursuing a massage therapy career? Make sure to find out the massage therapy licensing requirements for education and certification in your state because they vary a great deal. However, most states require that you undertake formal training and gain national certification.

Deep Tissue Bodywork:

Posted on: October 3rd, 2008 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

Deep Tissue MassageDeep tissue bodywork is a general term for a range of therapies that work to “unstick” the body’s connective tissues and/or muscles to encourage them to function properly again. Among the conditions deep tissue bodywork treats are whiplash, low back and neck pain, and degenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis. This procedure releases chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the grain of muscles, tendons and fascia. It is called deep tissue massage because it also focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue and is an advanced for of Swedish massage. The muscles are slowly warmed with regular massage before heavier pressure is applied. Deep tissue massage is not intended to be a relaxation massage, rather, it is often aimed for treatment of muscle injuries by increasing blood flow to the injured area. Deep tissue massage is also frequently used for the release of scar tissue.  Watch this video for good examples!

Aromatherapy

Posted on: August 27th, 2008 by Beauty Schools Directory 4 Comments

Aromatherapy uses “essential oils” to tap into one of our most utilized and sustaining senses – scent. Through the correct blending of aromatic and therapeutic oils, a therapist can affect an individual’s physical, emotional and spiritual healing. Aromatherapy is often used in conjunction with other therapeutic treatments. Combining this with a massage intensifies the healing power of both the essential oils and the massage.
