Empire Education Group’s annual ‘Empire Gives Back’ fundraising competition brought in $457,336.09 in donations, supplies and free services for women’s shelters across the country.
During the 5 month competition, students competed to see which school could raise the most donations per student.
From August 1st through December 31st, 2010 students collected as many cash donations, and in-kind donations, such as clothing and food, as possible.
Students from Empire’s Portage, MI, school are proud to give back through fundraisers and donations collected for their shelter.
The competition also included sales from Empire’s Annual National Day of Beauty, a one day event, in which 100% of proceeds from each student salon are donated to local shelters.
Each of Empire’s 102 schools in 21 states has ‘adopted’ a local women’s shelter to support. In addition to the annual fundraising competition, schools raise money and donations throughout the year, as well as offer free beauty services to women and children who are residents at the shelter.
In addition to this support, Empire Education Group has incorporated the ‘Cut It Out’ curriculum into all of its schools. “Cut It Out” is a nation-wide program for cosmetology professionals, training stylists on the signs of domestic violence and how to respond to clients who may shows signs of abuse.
“I am extremely proud of the effort and level of commitment our students and staffs have shown to their local shelters.” said Franklin K. Schoeneman, Chairman and CEO of Empire Education Group. “1 in 4 women in this country will report experiencing domestic violence in her lifetime. For me, that number is way too high for an industry like ours to ignore. Empire is committed to doing what it can to support those fighting against this crime, particularly in the communities in which our students and staff live.”
Each school will present their donation to their adopted shelter at a series of local open houses this year.
Schools which raised $100 worth of donations per student will receive 10 free seats to Empire’s Future Professional Expo, the nation’s largest cosmetology student competition and hair show in the country. For more information, visit www.empiregivesback.com.

Good day
I am a mother of a beautiful teenager daughter Naomi who wants to study Beauty Therapy next year. We live in a small city Eerste Rivier outside of Cape Town, South Africa. Both my husband and I have been unemployed since September 2010 and all the funds we had saved for education and other emergencies had to be used to cover our day to day expenses – bond payments, food and utility bills. We are now stuck and dont know where we will be getting the funds from to send our daughter to college. Banks dont want to help us as we are both unempoyed – we cannot refinance our house because we dont have a stable income.
I was searching the internet for sholarships and educational assistance but with no success. I couldnt find 1 institute that will sponsor beauty therapy or cosmetology in South Africa, Most of them will sponsor or donate to Engineering, Economics, Science and other fields except for the Beauty Industry.
The other problem I find is that most of the colleges that offer the cosmetology courses are private institutions and not goverment institutions. With further investigations I found that many students and parents cannot afford the expensive course fees, that is even more expensive than studying for a doctor or scientist. I am not sure what the reason for this is, but what I notice the students gets exceptional good pass rates and are allowed to write international exams as well, which helps them to find work elsewhere in the world.
Its my daughter dream to complete her beauty therapy training, write the international exams and then find a job on the cruiseships to gain experience. This dream will only be accomplished if we as her parents can assist her or if she must work for 2 years atleast and then start her studies. The last option she is not too keen to do.
Last night we were talking and I mentioned that maybe we can start a Student Fund for Cosmetology Students that is underprivileged like Naomi. The funds can then not just help my daughter but many other students who are in the same position that she is now. This way we can give back to the youth and make it possible for another girl to reach her dreams.
This is why I am writing this letter? I need Help? Firstly how do I start a donation fund? I will need a website – how can people make contact with us and there are so many things I would need to learn and do to be able to make this work, but I am willing to do just that. Will it be possible for someone to advise me how to get started and maybe mentor me with the whole process untill we have it up and running?
Your assistance will be greatly appreciated. Hope to hear from you soon.
Yours faithfully
Gina
