Cosmetology schools are required to review their students periodically throughout the cosmetology program but the amount of evaluations differ among schools. Some cosmetology schools choose to evaluate every quarter. The student review covers the practical skills they will be tested on during their licensing exams. Reviews also cover skills the students are weak on and take a written test covering theory concepts learned in class, in order to better prepare them for their state boards. Cosmetology schools will also do one on ones after the review to openly discuss afterthoughts, go over the exams, receive progress reports, and grades.
Depending on the school, some give reviews every two months or three months. The extra month allows more time for students to work on areas they scored low on.
Although some schools like to offer evaluations more frequently, the NACCAS requires cosmetology schools to at least evaluate students and/or issue report cards one time prior to midpoint and one time at the end of their schooling.
