One of the mistakes seasoned cosmetologists make is not taking advantage of existing customer relationships to increase their business. Every cosmetologist should keep a database of pertinent information about their customers including names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses. This allows you to send special information, announcements or offers to your customers.

If business is slow think of passing out fliers to neighboring establishments offering a free conditioner or facial or anything that will get attention from new clients that frequent the stores in the area and have never been to your salon. Maybe even a small fashion show revealing your own hairstyles, along with punch and possibly some snacks from a restaurant you left flyers at. That way they advertise your salon and you advertise their place. Do it on a Monday when the shop is usually closed not to interfere with your weekly clientele. Not to big or to much remember it's just a tease, so that you are not overwhelmed if you should get a big crowd and that it doesn't look skimpy if hardly anyone shows. Limit it to about two hours, so as not to be just sitting and waiting. Also at the end a good time to sell products, for instance facial scrubs or a beautiful scented conditioner.

I remember when in school the owners wife who had bleached hair, colored her hair each day a different pastel color to match her uniform. Couldn't wait each day to see which color she chose. I wish now that I had had the guts to do it myself. I guess that because I was so young and living at home with very conservative parents they would probably have thrown me out. I always wanted to try it and maybe one day I will what a conversation piece that would make but it would have to be very tasteful or else regarded as punk. It would then depend completely on the fashion, and worn by an older crowd not young kids. Pastels some how seem to soften the facial lines, creating a young glowing, youthful appearance. Think I'm crazy? Maybe so. Who knows maybe it'll happen. I can recall being very much of a therapist while doing hair. being a bit eccentric always made the clients feel more relaxed many times falling asleep in my chair.

Great article and great advice, Alex! I agree that it's important for beauty professionals to expand their horizons -- beyond their home state or country.
