If you haven’t already heard, a 10% federal tax will now be footed at the end of your tanning bill. It’s the government and the World Health Organization’s way of saying you should think twice about tanning; however it appears to be having the opposite effect.

Salon owners are coming up with clever ways to offset the increase by offering a 10% discount to regulars who come into their stores. They view the situation as “really sad” and “aiming at individuals.” Although the government is bringing in $2.7 billion in revenue from the new tanning laws, the subject is not sad. Tanning brings with it high risks, especially among young teens who start young and visit every day. One person dies every hour from melanoma, and the risks of melanoma increases 75 percent among people who use tanning beds before age 30, according to a report published last year by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
Maybe overtime the tax will live up to its purpose of alerting others tanning causes cancer and should not be partaken in as frequently. But if you’re a frequent bed tanner, think about converting to a spray tanner. The 10% federal tax does not apply!
