We were always taught that education matters. We were always told to try our hardest, and we would succeed in achieving our dreams. A country that sings the songs of golden opportunities and new hopes is displaying an unfair hypocrisy against young Americans, causing them to rethink if their dreams can still be obtainable. The U.S Department of Education’s proposed “gainful employment” rule could potentially eliminate federal financial funding for cosmetology and career colleges. The rule, disguised as a way to make sure students don’t take on too much debt, is actually halting aspirations and career ambitions by penalizing students for selecting a career path that may be different from their peers. A career path that according to the U.S. Department of Labor educates over three million students a year.
If passed, the gainful employment rule will give the federal government control over the career choices of our future Americans, inhibiting thousands of students from receiving a cosmetology or for-profit education. But it doesn’t stop there. For many, education offered by cosmetology and career schools is needed for personal growth, for employment and as a way to improve one’s current conditions. Without this education, thousand of American’s will have limited opportunities available.
