Ohio Cosmetology License Amnesty Program

Ohio State Board of Cosmetology LogoGood news for those of you who have accidentally let your Ohio cosmetology license lapse, or considered another career path for a while but want to make your way back into the beauty field. Former cosmetologists who want to get back into the beauty business without retaking the cosmetology license exam can contact the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology and ask about their Amnesty program. Kevin Miller, who is head of the OH State Board of Cosmetology, told NPR that up to 135,000 people could be impacted by this amnesty program.

Those of you who have been hesitant to get back into cosmetology, you won’t have to sit for the 110-question test and practical exam to get re-licensed. You must be able to prove that you have been licensed in the past. More than 500 people have already contacted the state board, and they expect many more as the media grabs hold of the news.

Even though getting re-licensed in Ohio doesn’t require re-taking the exam, if you have been out of the business for a long time we highly recommend looking at cosmetology continuing education. People who get re-licensed will be required to take a mandatory but free 4-hour safety and sanitation course, and then they must take additional CEUs with approved providers to brush up on their skills.

Are you one of the people who will be taking advantage of the Ohio cosmetology license amnesty program? Do you think people with lapsed cosmetology licenses should be able to reinstate them free of charge and regardless of how long it’s been lapsed? Leave us a comment!

Does the amnesty program apply to people who have moved from one state to another as well? I moved from Georgia to Ohio and I’m a licensed master cosmotologist in Georgia but was told I have to retake State Board exam for Ohio.
