How Safe are Permanent Cosmetics?

Permanent Lipstick - Tattoo Makeup ArtistSo, you woke up today and put on your eyeliner just like you do every morning. It may seem like a redundant task, but if it makes you feel good, you are going to do it religiously. However, if you habitually do the same makeup routine every single morning, you may start to secretly wish you could just have your makeup done for you every day. Is it possible to do permanent makeup? The short answer is — yes!

Permanent cosmetics is also referred to as permanent makeup and tattoo makeup. Permanent makeup is a similar process to how tattoos are applied. A person using a needle will apply pigmentation under the first layer of skin. There are numerous benefits to this process. For instance, even waterproof makeup sold in stores is never completely waterproof, am I right, people? But you are probably aware of that if you have ever purchased a tube of waterproof eyeliner and ended up with it smudging after a good rain (or a good cry). Even many of the toughest waterproofs tend to run a little bit when you go into the pool, shower or for a swim in the ocean. With permanent or tattoo makeup, you can go in water for as long as you want without getting the infamous “raccoon eyes.”‘

Depending on your makeup preferences and purchases, permanent makeup could potentially save you money on makeup in the long-term. The tattoo makeup procedure costs on average $500 to $2,000 total. Cheapo eyeliners that run all over your face cost about $1, but the highest quality liquid eyeliners can cost close to $35 per tube! Another benefit of permanent makeup is that it saves you time in the mornings. Maybe this means you can wake up a little later if you want by skipping the lengthy makeup routine. Not to mention you’ll never have those days where you’re running late, rushing out of the house, don’t have time to put on makeup, and people ask you, “Are you feeling ok?” all day because you look tired and sad without your makeup on. (True story – that’s happened to me.) Another perk for some who want to wear makeup but can’t due to allergies or sensitivities, permanent makeup, also called micropigmentation, can prevent the need to apply makeup that may bother your eyes or skin, especially if you have a condition like cataracts or a skin allergy to cosmetics.

Typically permanent cosmetics professionals or tattoo makeup artists are specifically trained to apply permanent makeup safely and accurately. Most states require special licensing after completing a set number of training hours before they are free to practice professionally and charge for their permanent makeup services. They are capable of applying different types of permanent makeup including tattooed eyeliner, lipstick or eyebrows. Some advanced practitioners may even offer permanent eyeshadow or blush. If you are looking a skilled professional to do the job, you should always examine their credentials and look at a portfolio of past work. Make sure they possess the correct licensing and training to perform the procedure safely, as well as accurately. In some cases, the procedure is considered advanced and may require additional training, so make sure the place you choose carries the correct credentials. Licensed permanent makeup artists take their jobs very seriously, and pay meticulous attention to giving the highest quality services in the safest environment.

Like all procedures, there are some risks to permanent makeup; however, they are generally rare and not serious. Swelling, blistering, granulomas, keloid formation and peeling may occur. Allergic reactions that can lead to a rash are possible, but choosing a pigment with an iron oxide base may prevent this risk. Additionally, avoiding organic pigments and vegetable-based ones can decrease your risk, well. Always remember to check credentials too, since those who are not properly trained are more likely to cause issues from the procedure. We can’t emphasize this enough, always choose licensed professionals who can prove their training and experience. A good permanent makeup artist will be able to consult with you on the best products for you – make sure to be completely open and honest with your tattoo makeup artist about any skin conditions, allergies or other concerns, so they can do their job effectively and safely. They will also coach you on clean, safe aftercare for your tattoo makeup, so pay attention to the information they give you!

As beautiful as I know all of us are, makeup still helps many of us feel better about ourselves  and gives us the extra boost of confidence we need to shine on a day-to-day basis. Permanent makeup is a unique way to save time and money, and always look your absolute best. Not to mention, it can be the only way that someone with sensitive skin may be able to wear makeup. With that being said, women can enjoy the benefits of permanent makeup – just always look for professionals who have undergone the proper permanent makeup training to experience the best results.
