Succeeding as a Cosmetologist: a Q&A with Our Fall 2023 Scholarship Winner, Clyne Williams

1. What do you believe will help you be successful as a cosmetologist?

My journey towards becoming a cosmetologist is deeply rooted in a genuine desire to make a positive impact on individuals' lives and to contribute meaningfully to the beauty industry.

My passion for the artistry and transformative power of cosmetology is evident in my lifelong fascination with beauty and aesthetics. This passion drives me to continuously seek knowledge and improvement in my skills. From experimenting with different makeup techniques to researching the latest trends in skincare, I am fully immersed in the world of beauty.

One of my strengths lies in my ability to connect with people and understand their needs. I believe that effective cosmetology goes beyond technical skills; it requires empathy and the ability to create a comfortable, welcoming environment for clients. I am committed to building genuine connections with clients and ensuring that their experience is as enriching as the final result.

The beauty industry is dynamic and ever-evolving, with new techniques and trends emerging regularly. I am dedicated to continuous learning and professional development. By staying updated on the latest advancements, I aim to provide cutting-edge services that cater to the diverse needs of clients. I'm committed to learning not only the latest techniques but also the psychological aspects of beauty, understanding how it intersects with self-confidence and wellbeing.

2. Is there anything you wish you would have known before starting beauty school? What tips do you have for future students?

Going into this industry, I had no clue what I was getting into. It was just a dream I had. You have to go above and beyond to succeed in this industry – from continuing your education to giving your full attention and knowledge to your client.

My tips for future students would be that it is 100% worth it in the long run. Give every client your full attention, knowledge, and, most of all, your time. You’ll make it further than you ever thought you could.

3. What were some of the most important factors you considered when choosing a cosmetology school?

When choosing a school, I chose not only the closest school, but the most “known” school. I chose the most well-known school because [I believe] to be successful in this industry, you must have good clientele.

4. What inspired you to pursue cosmetology school?

The inspiration to pursue a career in the beauty industry has been deeply ingrained in me through my family's lineage. My grandmother and great grandmother were both cosmetologists, and their legacy has ignited a profound passion within me to continue their tradition of helping women feel and look their best.

Witnessing the joy and confidence my grandmother and great grandmother brought to their clients was awe-inspiring. They were not just skilled cosmetologists, but true artists who used their talents to enhance the natural beauty of every woman who sat in their chairs. The way these women walked out of the salon with radiant smiles, uplifted spirits, and a renewed sense of self-worth left an indelible mark on my perception of the beauty industry.

My personal experiences and interactions have further fueled my determination to pursue this path. The satisfaction of applying makeup, styling hair, and providing skincare treatments goes beyond the surface—it's about nurturing self-esteem and fostering a positive self-image. Knowing that I have the ability to make women feel pretty, confident, and empowered fills me with a deep sense of purpose.

5. What are your career goals after you complete your program? Where do you hope to be 10 years from now?

After obtaining my cosmetology license, my career aspirations revolve around establishing and running my own business in the heart of west central rural Texas. Over the next 10 years, I envision creating a thriving beauty hub that caters to the diverse needs of the community while upholding the values of quality service, community engagement, and empowerment.

In the immediate years following licensure, I plan to gain hands-on experience by working in established salons and studios. This will allow me to refine my skills, build a loyal client base, and gain insights into the preferences and needs of the local clientele. During this time, I will continue to expand my knowledge by attending workshops, seminars, and keeping up with industry trends to ensure that my services are always current and innovative.

As I transition towards my long-term goal, I envision opening my own beauty establishment. This space will not only offer a wide range of beauty services including hair styling, makeup application, skincare treatments, and more, but it will also be a haven for community interaction and growth. I plan to create an environment where individuals from all walks of life can gather, connect, and enhance their sense of self-confidence and well-being.

In addition to the core services, I intend to organize workshops and educational sessions to empower clients with the knowledge and tools they need to take care of their beauty needs on a daily basis. By offering personalized consultations and a holistic approach to beauty, my business will become a destination where clients can not only receive excellent services but also embark on a journey of self-discovery and self-expression.

Ten years from now, I see my business as an integral part of the community, contributing to its economic development and fostering a sense of belonging. I envision having a dedicated and skilled team of professionals who share the same values and commitment to excellence. My business will be known not only for its exceptional beauty services but also for its dedication to community outreach, supporting local initiatives and giving back to the region that has embraced it.
