Paul Mitchell Schools Donate $106,250 to No Limits

Posted on: May 18th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

At their biannual owners Summit on May 1 in Newport Beach, CA, the nationwide network of Paul Mitchell cosmetology schools raised $106,250 for No Limits, the country’s only theater group for deaf and hard-of-hearing children. They raised the money in one day, through a silent auction in which numerous school owners and educators donated a day (or more) of education, and renowned artist Vladimir Prodanovich donated a painting valued at over $7,000.

Appearing at the Summit on behalf of No Limits, deaf comedian and motivational speaker Kathy Buckley showed a clip from the wildly popular TV show Glee, in which deaf singer and No Limits alumnus John Autry II performs a solo of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” In the program, his classmates accompany him through sign language, and the Glee choir joins in for a memorable performance between both schools.

As the clip ended, the real-life John Autry joined Kathy on stage and performed the song again, to the delight and surprise of the assembled Paul Mitchell school owners.

John is the reason we have No Limits today,” Kathy explained. At the age of seven, John began working with Michelle Christie-Adams, a highly qualified teacher dedicated to bringing speech to deaf and hearing-impaired children. When she discovered how much John loved music and performing, Michelle started the No Limits theater group especially for him.

Since then, the children of No Limits have performed in more than 60 productions in over 10 states, reaching an audience of over 30,000 people. No Limits has been featured in the New York Times, Newsday, Oprah, and other media outlets. Michelle has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the Top 100 Heroes award from Volvo for Life and the George Washington Medal of Honor from the Freedom Foundation.

Celebrity Hair Makeovers That Make Us Talk

Posted on: April 28th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

celebrity-hairIt was the haircut heard around the world—when the Biebs shed his infamous, shaggy ‘do for a closer, more mature looking cut.  While some fans quickly accepted the new look, others tweeted heartbroken and upset messages about Justin Bieber’s decision to get rid of his legendary locks.

Changing our hair in a drastic way often signals a lifestyle or career change—uh, remember when Britney Spears went for the shaved head?  When celebrities change up their look, it gives us just that much more to gossip about! Here are some of our favorite recent celeb hair makeovers that certainly have given us something to talk about.

1)    Chris Brown as a blonde—Chris Brown? How about Chris Blonde?  The singer recently revealed his bright new look on Twitter and wrote “#LookAtMeNow.”  The hair color change comes at a convenient time for publicity as Chris promotes his new album, F.A.M.E. which comes out March 22.

2)    Kate Gosselin’s extends her look—The mom of eight revealed long, blonde hair extensions last year as she told People magazine, she was “starting over.”  I think all of us girls can understand the “break-up makeover.”  When one relationship fades, you must embark on the next with a brand new look!

3)    Kim Kardashian as a beach bunny—Kim Kardashian is already a bombshell but last winter she made herself a blonde bombshell when she shocked the world with a WAY lighter shade of hair.  We give props to Kim for experimenting with blonde wigs at photo shoots first before diving in and dying her blonde.

4)    Nicki Minaj the chameleon—We just can’t pin down one hair change this singer has shocked us with because her hair changes every day! From the bright color stripes of color to the huge, leopard print bouffant she sported at this year’s Grammys.  This girl knows how to keep her look fresh—and a little bit wacky.

5)    Jennifer Aniston goes short—At her February 22 debut of “Just Go With It,” Jennifer Aniston’s famous long, flowy locks were significantly shorter.  Aniston’s new bob may catch on just as quickly as her well-known “Rachel” haircut from the sitcom “Friends.”

What are your favorite celebrity hair changes?

Easter and Other Holiday Hairstyles Gone Wrong

Posted on: April 6th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

With the holidays just around the corner, it’s important that you look your best. Whether you’re going to a party – looking to make an impression or opting for the more casual experience, one thing is for certain – you don’t want your holiday hair to resemble the holiday you’re celebrating – or do you? So without any delay, here is a list of holiday hairstyles not to rock during your happy holidays!

holiday-hairstyles-easter

Easter Hairstyles

Easter is great and all but talk about taking your love for bunnies to the extreme – WOW! Granted this woman is part of an animal hair fashion show (yes, there were in fact other women with animal woven locks), but it doesn’t stray far from the fact that you should never attempt this rabbit inspired ‘do on your own free time.

holiday-hairstyles-fourth-of-july

Fourth of July Hairstyles

Lady Liberty is a beautiful sight to behold, whether you live in New York or are simply visiting. It’s especially breathtaking on our nation’s day of Independence – a beautiful scene of freedom. However, what’s not so beautiful is a real-life Statue of Liberty hair impersonator. That’s not freeing, it’s just embarrassing.

holiday-hairstyles-halloween

Halloween Hairstyles

Unless you want to look like a gruesomely vengeful, little girl out to kill everyone and everything – or Cousin It from The Adams Family, then it’s strongly encouraged to avoid the whole hair covering your entire face look. We’ll just say it like it is – straight up creepy!

holiday-hairstyles-thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Hairstyles

Since Thanksgiving is the closest holiday, we’ll kick off the list with this Turkey hungry festivity. On a day where overeating is celebrated as a national holiday, one thing you don’t want to do is look like any of the food items or décor associated with it. The turkey may be an essential icon for Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t mean you should recreate it as a hairstyle.

holiday-hairstyles-christmas

Christmas Hairstyles

The most popular season of the year – a time of joy, cheer, crowded parking lots and millions of people teetering on the edge of breaking. Christmas is a time of celebration with friends and family, so the last thing you want to do is look like the big man in red himself. Word of advice: if you’re an older man with a white beard, you might consider shaving – at least until the season is over.

holiday-hairstyles-new-years

New Year’s Hairstyles

Because New Years doesn’t officially have any associated icons or symbols, there isn’t really any specific hairstyle to avoid. Just make sure you don’t look ridiculous. Like…well, this lady – taking the midnight kiss to a whole new level.

holiday-hairstyles-st-patricks-day

Saint Patrick’s Day Hairstyles

The holiday that encourages drinking and wearing green is a happily celebrated holiday, typically featuring large parades of green masses. It’s a fun time for everyone to show off the little bit of Irish in them. But, one thing you don’t want to do – other than not wear green because pinching hurts – is base your hairstyle on St. Paddy’s little green-plaided mascot – the leprechaun. That’s right; there isn’t anything cool or sexy about looking like a ridiculous-bearded leprechaun.

North Carolina Cosmetology State Board Under Inspection

Posted on: March 30th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

north-carolina-state-board-of-cosmetology1Cosmetology state boards are being evaluated, which could result in big changes for the cosmetology industry. The Food and Drug Administration is limited when it comes to regulating certain cosmetics. Often time state boards will aid in inspecting these products, making sure they are following safety guidelines, but now certain state boards are being inspected as well including North Carolina State Board of Cosmetology. The NC State Board licenses roughly 85,000 cosmetologists and beauty experts throughout its 78 years of operation. But currently, North Carolina is under review.

With licensing, styling and salon fees being high, especially during these currently times of a recession, some supervisors feel getting rid of these fees would bring a sigh of relieve for the beauty industry. If this were to happen, the Cosmetology Board’s services will not be as needed, which would bring a restricting or elimination of the state board all together. The board’s mission is to protect the public from using unsafe beauty products. Some fear that North Carolina could become a less quality environment if safety checks were no longer in place. If licensing was no longer required for cosmetologists to practice, this could potentially result in more harm than good, especially when it comes to sanitary regulations!

History of Cosmetology

History of Cosmetology Through the Decades
Every profession’s practitioners change with the times, but in an industry that deals exclusively with appearance, those changes are greatly pronounced. Cosmetology, perhaps more than any other field, has seen those who ply its tools transform from decade to decade, beginning in the the 1930′s and continuing right up to today.

After the Roaring Twenties ended, cosmetology was still a newer profession, with most of its stylists, skin specialists, and manicurists trained at tiny, private schools. These white-frocked “cosmetistes” as some were called, worked with females only, and were beginning to use electrical tools for the very first time. Shops were staffed by groups of women who dressed in crisp, white uniforms, and sported hairstyles of the 30′s, more somber and tied back than their 1920 counterparts. Short, pinned hair was the rage, and the demure look, for stylists as well as their clients, was par for the course.

History of Cosmetology: The 1940s

The 1940′s saw big changes, with salons now offering curling and a slightly more feminine look than the drab 1930′s. Since many hair products were in short supply due to the war, improvising became necessary. Simple was in, extravagant was out. Beauty shops, as they were known, made due with hot-curling and light rinses due to soap and shampoo scarcity. Cosmetologists themselves were often the most stylish people around, because they usually were the only ones who had access to the cherished skin, hair, and nail products. The typical salon worker of the era thought nothing of wearing curlers and headscarves as they walked to their jobs in the cities, making up and freshening up at the beauty shop on arrival.

History of Cosmetology: The 1950s

The 1950′s started with the ponytail as the hairstyle of choice, and in many ways cosmetologists became role models for their female customers, demonstrating just how easy it was to look modern. Cosmetologists really came into their own at this point, earning good wages, and seeing an up spike in regular clientele. A 1950′s cosmetologist looked a lot like Liz Taylor did in those days, with ruby red lips, heavy makeup and mascara, and sculpted, meticulously styled hair and nails.

History of Cosmetology: The 1960s

The 1960′s cosmetologist was wildly different, sporting any of the popular hairstyles of the rock and roll era. The profession was a style-setter of the decade, offering everything from Twiggy ultra-short cuts to Cher-hair, long and straight. Many cosmetologists grew their businesses to include hair removal services and sought male customers who had long hair that was in desperate need of help. The 1960′s cosmetologist was a walking advertisement for the mod hair and nail trends that were sweeping the country. Think big, teased, long, hair-as-a-centerpiece, and that’s the cosmetologist of the 1960′s.

History of Cosmetology: The 1970s & 1980s

The cosmetologist of the 1970′s and 1980′s was more subdued, sporting a wider variety of more sophisticated shades and more natural hair styles, perhaps in reaction to the new “ecology” movement, which emphasized cleaner, less made up looks. White frock, medical jackets were standard issue, as were stylish, shorter hairdos. Think Marlo Thomas in the TV show “That Girl,” or Mary Tyler Moore’s groomed look on her show, and that sums up the cosmetologist look for the era.

History of Cosmetology: Today

Today’s cosmetology practitioner, whether female or male, is a true fashion leader. From the early 1990′s to today, stylists, nail techs, and estheticians are consultants and indeed look the part. No one look prevails, because individuality is the catchphrase of the modern era. Naturalness, cleanliness, and colors.
