Six Salon Red Flags

Posted on: March 24th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

salon1.    Not Having a License: All salons must have a license in order to practice and the license is usually posted on each hairstylists or esthetician’s desk. Not having a license or expired licenses is a big no-no. The salon is basically telling you their health standards are not up-to-date or their skills are not top-notch. Make sure a license is present!
2.    The Presence of Pets: Pets are cute but they bring up a flag for sanitary conditions. Pets should be kept at home not in a place of work.
3.    Un-kept Bathroom: We clean our own bathrooms frequently, salons should as well. Just like your sink at home may have dirt and hair clippings, scummy sinks can give you a strong vibe of how the salon views cleanliness. Unfilled paper towels and toilet paper are also huge signs of a low quality salon.
4.    Dirty Tools: The sanitation liquid is there on the salon desk for a reason! If all tools aren’t completely submerged in the cleansing liquid, speak up or rethink revisiting!
5.    Washing Your Hands: This one may be harder to catch but each specialist should wash their hands before working on their next client to prevent spreading of germs.
6.    The White Towel: Each client should get one towel during their visit, not to be used on any other client. Shared towels are not only disgusting but can spread unwanted bacteria.

crackle-nail-polish-chinaglazeYou know how you usually freak out, say a choice word or boil with frustration when you smudge or chip a fresh manicure? Well, looking un- polished (sorry, we had to!) isn’t so taboo in the manicure world anymore.

The newest trend to hit salon and store shelves is crackle nail polish. Yes, it looks just like it sounds. It creates a crackly, textured look on your nails. With some brands crackle nail polish almost gives off a safari or leopard print vibe. While makeup companies dabbled in the crackle nail polish trend years ago, today’s crackle polishes come in a wide spectrum of colors with varying shimmers and truly give off an edgy, artsy look.

crackle-nail-polish-katyperrynails

To get the desired look, you paint on a base color and top it with a black top coat that crackles over the base coat.

OPI released a crackle nail polish line as the Katy Perry collection complete with four shades named after Perry’s songs including Teenage Dream, Not Like The Movies, Last Friday Night, and The One That Got Away. We think the look makes as bold of statement as Katy does!

Three other brands that are selling this “shattering” look:

• China Glaze
• Cover girl
• Mia Secret

How Often Should Cosmetology Students Receive Reviews?

Posted on: February 24th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

cosmetology-school-reviews1 Cosmetology schools are required to review their students periodically throughout the cosmetology program but the amount of evaluations differ among schools. Some cosmetology schools choose to evaluate every quarter. The student review covers the practical skills they will be tested on during their licensing exams. Reviews also cover skills the students are weak on and take a written test covering theory concepts learned in class, in order to better prepare them for their state boards. Cosmetology schools will also do one on ones after the review to openly discuss afterthoughts, go over the exams, receive progress reports, and grades.

Depending on the school, some give reviews every two months or three months. The extra month allows more time for students to work on areas they scored low on.

Although some schools like to offer evaluations more frequently, the NACCAS requires cosmetology schools to at least evaluate students and/or issue report cards one time prior to midpoint and one time at the end of their schooling.

If you are a student thinking about going to cosmetology school, visit the beauty school reviews section on My Social Beauty to see how your school rates!

A post by Charlotte Willer, Maybelline New York’s Global Makeup Artist, reporting from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.

“The inspiration for the beauty look at Betsey Johnson is Betsey herself,” says Maybelline New York Global Makeup Artist Charlotte Willer. “It’s a flirt look, full of pizzazz and spunk. But it’s quite mysterious at the same time. Ultimately, it’s a spin of Betsey’s exuberant personality – mixed with the rebellious roaring 20’s.”

Get The LOOK:
Fit me! Foundation: Charlotte applied foundation to the skin using her hands. She blended it into the face and neck for seamless coverage.

Fit Me! Pressed Power: The lightweight powder was dusted across the forehead, nose, cheekbones and chin for a natural finish.

Eye Studio Color Plush Silk Eyeshadow (New for Fall 2011): To achieve an intense smokey eye, Charlotte layered two midnight blue eyeshadow shades onto the lids and extended up to the brown bone. A vivid shimmery gold shade was then applied to the inner corners of the eye, for a dramatic and eye-enhancing touch.

Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Liner (New for Fall 2011): To add even more drama and definition, Charlotte linked the upper and lower lids with this deep gel eyeliner.

Volumin’ Express The Falsies Mascara: Dramatic lashes were created with two coats of this volumizing mascara, for a show stopping look.

Color Sensational Lipcolor (New for Fall 2011) Red Haute: A bold, vivacious red lip brought an artfully chic balance to the face. Charlotte applied the flaming hot shade with a lip b rush for striking definition that could be seen a mile away.

Easy Updos: How to create a chic hairstyle in minutes!

Posted on: February 10th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

braided-side-chignonDo you have a special occasion coming up but don’t have the time or the money to do a fancy schmancy hairstyle?  We have a few options for you that we promise will make other party guests want your hair secret…but we won’t tell them it took you five minutes to do!

The Ponytail- While the ponytail is often thought of as a “lazy day” hairstyle or casual, it can complete a fancy look.  A sleek ponytail can really make an impact, especially if you have a lot going on with your outfit and makeup.  What else can you do to make an everyday ponytail a little more chic?  Try wrapping a piece of hair around the elastic band, tease the hair on the crown of your head to give a little more “oomph” or use a small jewel, flower or bauble to dress up the side of the ponytail.

Braids- Whether it’s a long braid down your back or a small braid across the crown of your head, this easy and popular hair trend can add an interesting detail to your formal attire.  Braiding is easy and quick to do and can add a bit of whimsy to an otherwise sophisticated look.

Side bun- Is a regular bun too boring for you?  Move it to the side of your head and see what you think!  Your look can’t get any more elegant than completing it with a sexy side bun.  The trick to getting a look more “Latin lover” than librarian is to not pull the hair on the crown of your head too tight and to allow a few pieces of hair to frame your face.  Add a sparkly bauble or flower to the side of the bun for extra glam.

Half updo- No matter what length of hair you have, a half up half down ‘do looks great.  With this hairstyle you have a lot of options as well- you can curl your hair, wear it straight, or pull the hair back high or low.  If you prefer to wear your hair down but want to be able to show off a great neckline or dangly earrings this is the perfect compromise.

So there you have it.  Four extremely easy hairstyles that literally take minutes to do and don’t even require a curling iron or straightener.  For special occasions, many people don’t realize that you don’t really need a fancy hair style to compete with an elegant dress and dynamic makeup.  So, try out one of our easy hairstyles and enjoy a stress-free evening!

Tickled Pink: Pantone declares ‘honeysuckle’ color of 2011

Posted on: February 8th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

visions_in_honeysuckle_pantone_color_of_the_year“Courageous.  Confident.  Vital. A brave new color, for a brave new world.  Let the bold spirit of Honeysuckle infuse you, lift you and carry you through the year.  It’s a color for every day—with nothing “everyday” about it.”  -Pantone’s website

Ready to jump on the Honeysuckle bandwagon after reading that?   Yep, we are, too.  Pantone, “the world’s authority on color,” announced last month that this lively reddish-pink hue was the 2011 color of the year, and we are ready to bring it to bloom this spring.

Honeysuckle, which some may at first think is yellow, is a bright pink that the company says is “encouraging and uplifting,” which seems appropriate amidst our country’s economic and political turmoil this year.

“In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits.  Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going—perfect to ward off the blues,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

Last year’s color, turquoise, is so 2010.  Update your beauty and fashion routine with some Honeysuckle!

1)    On your nails— Wearing honeysuckle on your nails is a simple and temporary way to try out the trend.  Use Sinful Colors’ Cream Pink.

2)    On your cheeks—Use Shiseido’s Makeup Accentuating Color Stick in Rosy Flush on your cheeks for a handy way to give yourself a honeysuckle glow.

5)    On your dresser—Ok, so you can’t really wear this, but it sure looks pretty on your dresser in its pink bottle.  Smell as fresh as honeysuckle looks with DKNY Be Delicious in Fresh Blossom.

Five Beauty Tips From Dancing with the Stars

Posted on: November 23rd, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

121970_7710If you’re like me, and well, about 30 million other fans, you’ve been getting your weekly dose of samba and sparkles this fall thanks to a little show called, “Dancing with the Stars.”  Each week I look forward to the glittering outfits and fast-moving cha-chas on the show.  Although most of us will never get away with wearing some of those frou-frou outfits or waltzing with those professional dancer cuties, we can take a cue from some of their beauty tips.

In fact, just last week, I put a little extra sparkle on my eyelids and realized that I have been bitten by the Dancing with the Stars beauty bug!  Here are the top five beauty tips you can get from tuning into the show each week!  Try some of these beauty ideas.  Unlike the contestants on the show, you won’t be judged, promise!

1. Spray tans are the answer for instant glow. Each week all the dancers float onto stage looking like they’ve spent a week sunbathing in the French Riviera.  Their sunny golden glow is addictive—and makes most of us want to run to our nearest tanning salon.  But they’ve got the right idea, sprays tans are the way to go.  We all know how damaging fake baking can be—wrinkles, leathery skin and of course the worst, skin cancer, are all brought on by tanning beds.  Follow the dancing stars’ lead (sorry, had to!) and spray on your glow.

2. Sparkles make everything better. I’m a sucker for sparkles.  I drool over the stars’ glitzy dresses and shimmering make-up every week.  Maybe all-over sparkle just won’t do for your workplace, but adding a little shimmer or sparkle here and there can really make an impact on your usual wardrobe or make-up routine.  The key is to just add it in a few places.  Try a sparkly pair of flats, dangly, glittery earrings or a little touch of silver eye shadow.  As we know from the show, a little sparkle can go a long way!

3. Refuse to get in a rut with your hair. Have you noticed how often the hairstyles change on this show?  Every show!  One dance the star may have a slicked-back ponytail, for a samba she may have long luscious curls, and another dance it’s fun waves.  Watching this show not only gives you great ideas to try with your own hair, but it also encourages you to change up your look often.

4. High heels really do make your legs look longer. Don’t have long, lean dancer legs? No problem! A pair of heels can make any pair of gams more gamourous, er, glamourous! Heels also add a little attitude to any outfit—even an ordinary pair of jeans.  So, don’t be afraid to break out those red heels more often—just don’t try to shimmy in them all day like the stars on the show.  Ouch!

5. Exercise brings more than weight-loss. Ever notice that the stars on the show are glowing, smiling and just seem, well, happy? It all goes back to what a famous Elle Woods once said, “Exercise releases endorphins, and endorphins make you happy.”  Yes, the stars on the show may lose a few pounds from the increased activity but they also seem to realize exercise’s other benefits—improving your mood!  It’s a reminder to all of us to get more exercise to not only keep us physically fit but mentally sound as well.

Three Great Pumpkin Facial Recipes for Radiant Skin

Posted on: October 14th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

4060748237_aaa529b3acIt seems like every fall more and more uses for pumpkins come into play. If it’s not something new you can eat, it’s something you can drink or in this case something you can apply on your face!

Pumpkins can in fact be used in several natural beauty remedies as skin treatments. As it turns out, pumpkins, whether you want to classify them as fruits (they have seeds) or vegetables (they are a member of the squash family) are full of vitamin C and caroteniods, such as beta carotene which are powerful anti-oxidants that help neutralized skin damage.

Here are some great pumpkin recipes, including a pumpkin face mask, that Narine Nikogosian, author of the book Return to Beauty: Old-World Recipes for Great Radiant Skin provides for healthy looking skin:

Harvest Cleanser
Good for: Normal-to-oily skin
Ingredients: 1 pumpkin slice, 1/4 cup milk
Preparation: Remove the skin and seeds from the pumpkin, then slice and cut it into cubes. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat the pumpkin cubes until they are soft. In a small bowl, mash the pumpkin. In a second small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the mashed pumpkin with the milk. Add 1/4 cup of water and mix well.
Application: Pour a small amount of the mixture onto a clean wet washcloth or sponge. Gently wash your face with this in the morning and evening. Rinse with warm water.

Pumpkin Happy Face Mask
Good for: Dry skin
Ingredients: 1 pumpkin wedge, 1 tablespoon olive oil
Preparation: Remove the rind and chop up the pumpkin into 10 cubes. Boil the pumpkin cubes in water for 10 minutes, drain, then mash them and let cool. Combine 2 tablespoons of mashed pumpkin with the oil and mix well.
Application: Gently apply this to your face and neck and relax for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water, then apply your moisturizer.

Pumpkin Eye Mask
Good for: Anyone
Ingredients: 1 pumpkin slice, 1 teaspoon honey
Preparation: Peel and seed a slice of pumpkin. Cook it in 2 cups of water until soft, then mash it and add 1 teaspoon of honey.
Application: Put the mixture inside clean gauze, then place over your eyes and relax for 20 minutes.

Death from Pedicures, Brazilian Bikini Wax Burns and Other Beauty Dangers

Posted on: October 5th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-schools-beauty-dangersWe’ve all experienced beauty disasters—bad hair days and makeup mishaps but what about beauty emergencies?  Have you ever injured yourself thanks to your beauty routine?  Actually painful and severe injuries can occur from our everyday beauty routines.

Burns from curling irons and flat irons are probably the most common injury.  Curling irons and flat irons get up to dangerous temperatures.  It’s important to remember to turn off your iron when you’re done and keep them away from children.  According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 7,700 injuries were caused to children under 5 years old were from touching a hot curling iron.  Another 5,400 aged 15 – 24 experienced ER- treated burns from curling irons.

Pedicures can also be a health risk.  People have actually died and had amputations caused from pedicure medical problems.  Pedicure tools that aren’t properly cleaned can be a serious threat to your health.  Also, tubs you soak your feet in need to be cleaned well or they can turn into a hot bed for bacteria.  MRSA, or staph infections, that is resistant to antibiotics can also be contracted through tubs.  The best thing you can do to protect yourself is to make sure your salon disinfects well.  Also, make sure you don’t have any open cuts on your feet or legs, and as gross as it seems, don’t shave your legs before you go—less chance for bacteria to get into open pores.

Here are some less common beauty-related injuries. Don’t let these beauty emergencies happen to you! Ouch!

•    Cat Attack: One woman describes when she was using an eyelash curler and her cat jumped up on her bathroom counter at her.  She was startled and ended up pulling out ALL her eyelashes.  Although her eyelashes grew back, she had to have mix-matched eyes for awhile.

•    Shards Glass Real Life: Think skin cancer is your only risk with tanning? Think again! One woman was using a stand up tanning bed and a UV bulb burst sending shards of glass all over her body.  The woman suffered only minor cuts, but still that can’t feel good!

•    Burns in Unexpected Places: One woman in Connecticut experienced a Brazilian gone bad.  When she went for a Brazilian wax the salon technician let the hot wax drip to places it shouldn’t. Yikes! The incident resulted in severe burns that not only caused intense pain for the woman but gave her a hospital bill of $750.  Needless to say, the woman won a lawsuit of $100,000 against the salon.

So, be careful with your daily beauty routine! Even the things that make you feel great about the way you look, can also hand your some painful injuries.
