5 Ways to Use Your Salon Powers for Good

Posted on: July 13th, 2012 by Heather 1 Comment

Salon Charitable GivingCosmetologists, salons and spas have tremendous opportunities to give back to the community through charitable work – and much of it is right in line with what you’re already doing! Whether a stylist decides to become a mentor or donate his or her own hair to Locks for Love, a salon stylist can take proactive steps in bettering his or her local community. The ways that a salon can give back to the community are endless, but here are just a few examples to get you started. 5 ways to use your salon’s powers for good:

Locks of Love

Locks of Love began in 2007 and provides wigs to children under the age of 18 who have lost their hair due to severe illnesses. The children may have lost their hair due to cancer, alpocia, being involved in a fire or for other medical reasons. The mission of the charity is to provide wigs made of real hair to these children so that they can restore their confidence and self-esteem. A hair stylist can become involved in this organization by donating his or her own hair. Hair must be at least 10 inches long before it can be cut and mailed to the organization. Hair stylists can also make their clients aware of the organization and encourage them to become involved. Other charities do similar things, like Pantene Beautiful Lengths.

Cut It Out

Cut It Out is a charity organization comprised of salons that are dedicated to fighting domestic violence in inner cities throughout the United States. The organization trains salon stylists so that they can notice signs of abuse on victims. Stylists are able to recognize when a woman is being beaten in a relationship and can then refer her to local organizations in the community that assist domestic violence victims. The organization also provides educational materials that can be distributed to clients in salons.

Look Good… Feel Better

Look Good Feel Better is an organization that is dedicated to providing beauty tips to women who have cancer or who have survived cancer. Cosmetologists can volunteer for this organization and provide coaching for women on how to do makeup, manage hair loss and treat damaged skin. This organization also provides online tutorials that can help cancer patients learn how to apply makeup in a flattering way to hide the effects of chemotherapy.

Kiva Loans

Deciding to donate money toward the purchase of a Kiva loan is another way that salon stylists can benefit women who are struggling abroad but want to improve their lives for the long-term. Kiva loans provide funds to small business owners in impoverished countries and help them cover their business expenses. A hairstylist can even take up a collection of donations from his or her co-workers and clients to support a particular business through the Kiva loan program.

Donating Hair for Oil Booms

The other effective way that salon stylists can give back to the community is by donating hair to businesses that make hair booms. Hair booms absorb oil in oil spill cleanups. After the BP oil spill, salons came to the rescue in providing massive amounts of hair to create hair booms that could absorb oil. You’re just cutting it off and sweeping it into the trash anyway – why not box it up and ship it out to help the environment?

These are some of the most effective ways that a hair stylist can have an impact on the local community. A hairstylist can definitely use his or her salon powers for good with a bit of resourcefulness and determination. This list of 5 charities your salon can take part in is just the beginning. There is a whole world of charitable opportunity out there to make an impact, boost salon morale and represent your salon well in the community.

Pink Breast Cancer RibbonThe Look Good … Feel Better program helps women who have cancer improve their appearances, which can in turn improve their outlooks. When women’s appearances are affected by the side effects of cancer treatments, trained cosmetologists have the ability to help. Inspired by the difference a makeover made in a cancer patient’s appearance and attitude, the Personal Care Products Council, American Cancer Society and Professional Beauty Association/National Cosmetology Association teamed up to create the Look Good … Feel Better program to provide cosmetics and cosmetology advice to cancer patients who can benefit from beauty tools, knowledge and skills.

It is easy for anyone to feel discouraged when she doesn’t believe she looks her best. Beauty professionals witness firsthand just how much a beauty treatment can improve clients’ confidence and moods in addition to improving their appearances. The Look Good … Feel Better program brings beauty guidance to women at a time in their lives when they can benefit from it most. Chemotherapy, radiation and other cancer treatments can result in changes to patients’ appearances. Patients focused on getting well may not have the time and energy to devote to developing new beauty routines and can be at a loss as how to deal with their new beauty challenges. That’s where cosmetologists can step in to demonstrate the techniques appropriate for patients, beautifying and uplifting them. With their personal beauty needs met, these patients can continue their fight against cancer with renewed zest and peace of mind.

The Look Good … Feel Better program does not support any particular name brand or earn a profit from their services. Instead, the program offers free public services nationwide, is funded by donations and makes use of donated beauty products. Volunteer beauty professionals are trained and certified to provide support for the Look Good … Feel Better program, which hosts group workshops in over 3,000 locations nationwide. The program also holds workshops in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The Look Good … Feel Better Program is not limited to workshops. It also offers self-help kits through the mail, online support and a 24-hour hotline. Through the program, trained beauty professionals are able to positively influence the lives of others by offering their professional expertise.

9 Beauty Industry Record-Holders in the Guinness Book of World Records

Posted on: April 25th, 2012 by Heather No Comments

Did you know that beauticians and barbers have a long history in breaking world records? These talented individuals have done everything from giving haircuts worth thousands of dollars to continuing to hone their barbering skills late into their elderly age. Knowing the Guinness World Records that these talented hairstylists and other beauty professionals now hold can help clients find a newfound appreciation for the art of hair care and beauty services. Read on to discover some of the most amazing accomplishments of renowned hair stylists in the world!

World Record Lipstick Applications

One impressive hairstylist is likely the envy of other hairstylists everywhere. This man, Stuart Phillips, is renowned for giving the most expensive haircut in the world. Want to know how much he charged for a simple layered cut? The price tag was over $16,000, and the lucky client was a woman who could not find a hairstylist that she liked in all of Italy. She needed to make a last-minute appointment, and the reason she chose this hairstylist was due to seeing his name splattered across the pages of Vogue magazine.

Another impressive hairstylist is Anthony Mancinelli, who continues to practice hairstyling as a 96-year-old man in Italy. While Mancinelli may have had years to develop his talents in hair styling, the same is not true for professional hair stylist Aycan Kemal. Aycan Kemal is known for her ability to braid in the fastest time in the world. At the Afro Hair and Beauty Show she did cornrow braids in the hair of a client in only 15 minutes. She completed over 26 braids during this time!

The ability to braid in only minutes is not the only skill hairstylists can complete in limited time. John McGuire is a hairstylist from Ireland who was able to shave 60 heads in only one hour. Clare Madden is another hairstylist with the ability to beautify many clients in only an hour. Her world record is that she was able to apply lipstick to 467 clients in only one hour! The participants gathered at the beauty department in Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield. Each participant was given her own lipstick, and a volunteer applied the lipstick to each individual participant.

Some hairstylists enjoy breaking world records that benefit charities, and these hair stylists participated in the Pantene Beautiful Lengths campaign. Individuals participating in this event donated over 100 pounds of hair in 24 hours for the Mississippi Institute for Aesthetics, Nail and Cosmetology.

Other attempts to break world records seek to complete the maximum number of bikini waxes or nail manicures possible. A team of individuals from the Priceline and Sally Hansen event completed over 2,500 manicures in 8 hours. At the Every Women’s Expo in 2004, a woman did 262 bikini waxes in only 4 hours.

These are some of the most interesting world records that have been achieved by beauty professionals throughout the world!

Salons & Stylists Participate in National Donate Your Hair Day

Posted on: April 9th, 2012 by Heather No Comments

Cutting Long Hair to DonateA client who is ready to commit to a significant haircut that greatly reduces the length of her hair can help provide wigs for cancer patients by heading to a salon or hair event on April 27th, National Donate Your Hair Day. There you canll discover a new look and a new purpose for your old locks. Donated hair is sent to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, an organization that uses the hair to make wigs for cancer patients. It takes a minimum of six donations to make a Pantene Beautiful Lengths wig, so salons and hair events cannot be too busy on this important day!

Not all clients will have hair that qualifies for donation, but those who do receive haircuts can not only change their appearances but also make a difference in the lives of cancer patients. To qualify for donation, Pantene Beautiful Lengths requires hair be a minimum of eight-inches long when measured straight, free from chemical treatments and permanent hair color, and less than five-percent gray. Pantene Beautiful Lengths requests that hair donations be secured in elastic bands and placed in plastic bags before shipping.

Hairstylists can assist clients in making their donations by evaluating, preparing and cutting hair properly. Hair should be clean, dry and product-free. Many cuts for donation are made simply by putting the hair up in a ponytail and cutting above the elastic band. Hairstylists can help their clients with this process by measuring the length of the hair to be cut and ensuring that it is eight inches or longer before putting their scissors to work. If the hair does not exceed eight inches, it should be allowed to grow more because it does not yet qualify for donation. For those with lengths that do qualify, stylists can position the elastic band carefully or use more than one elastic band to make the most of each client’s donation amount.

Stylists can contribute to National Donate Your Hair Day by providing appropriate services for their donation-minded clients, either at salons or hair events. Many stylists nationwide are participating in National Donate Your Hair Day by familiarizing themselves with Pantene Beautiful Lengths requirements and offering the hair cutting and sometimes even donation mailing services. Some are going so far as to volunteer their time or offer the service at a discounted rate.

Do you work at a salon or beauty school that is participating in National Donate Your Hair Day? Chime in! Let us know how you’re contributing to the event!

Cancer Brings Mother and Daughter Closer Together

Posted on: February 8th, 2012 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

Cancer takes a great deal from a person and a family. This is especially true when a cancer victim has small children who don’t fully understand the condition. But we were quite moved by how this mother-daughter combo found a way to make the disease and the treatment bring them closer together.

Sara Duncan is a breastfeeding support worker who was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2011. With her diagnosis, Sara is taking what many would take as devastating news and turning into something positive.

Sara and her husband, Craig Etchells, are parents to six children, including six-year-old Lola Etchells. In order to help Lola to understand what her mother would look like post-chemo, Sara let her daughter be the one to cut her hair. While some people may have a very emotional experience with parting with their hair, Sara and Lola bonded over the event. They even shared a few laughs, such as when her daughter made the remark, “You are going to look like daddy when I am finished – two baldies.”

Even Craig had the opportunity to be part of the experience. A primary school IT manager, Craig stepped up as videographer, watching and laughing along with the ladies. During in the process, the video became a special memory to watch later. In fact, family and friends of Sara were moved by the video, resulting in Sara uploading the video to YouTube for everyone to see.

The touching moment between the daughter and mother has gone viral. Although Sara does place value on her hair, as she stated it’s part of your identity, she accepted her illness, and her children are helping her to make each milestone in her recovery a positive experience. She even denotes her daughter cutting her hair as cathartic. Although her fight isn’t over, she has radiotherapy along with five years of hormone therapy, Sara, Lola, Craig and their other children, are making the most of her diagnosis.

Beauty Schools Directory would like to take this moment to encourage all of our readers to donate toward cancer research and prevention through the charity of your choice. Every little bit counts.
