Cosmetology Students Collect More Than $450,000 in Donations for Local Women’s Shelters

empire-education-cosmetology-studentsEmpire Education Group’s annual ‘Empire Gives Back’ fundraising competition brought in $457,336.09 in donations, supplies and free services for women’s shelters across the country.

During the 5 month competition, students competed to see which school could raise the most donations per student.

From August 1st through December 31st, 2010 students collected as many cash donations, and in-kind donations, such as clothing and food, as possible.

Students from Empire’s Portage, MI, school are proud to give back through fundraisers and donations collected for their shelter.

The competition also included sales from Empire’s Annual National Day of Beauty, a one day event, in which 100% of proceeds from each student salon are donated to local shelters.

Each of Empire’s 102 schools in 21 states has ‘adopted’ a local women’s shelter to support.  In addition to the annual fundraising competition, schools raise money and donations throughout the year, as well as offer free beauty services to women and children who are residents at the shelter.

In addition to this support, Empire Education Group has incorporated the ‘Cut It Out’ curriculum into all of its schools.  “Cut It Out” is a nation-wide program for cosmetology professionals, training stylists on the signs of domestic violence and how to respond to clients who may shows signs of abuse.

“I am extremely proud of the effort and level of commitment our students and staffs have shown to their local shelters.” said Franklin K. Schoeneman, Chairman and CEO of Empire Education Group.  “1 in 4 women in this country will report experiencing domestic violence in her lifetime.  For me, that number is way too high for an industry like ours to ignore.  Empire is committed to doing what it can to support those fighting against this crime, particularly in the communities in which our students and staff live.”

Each school will present their donation to their adopted shelter at a series of local open houses this year.

Schools which raised $100 worth of donations per student will receive 10 free seats to Empire’s Future Professional Expo, the nation’s largest cosmetology student competition and hair show in the country.  For more information, visit www.empiregivesback.com.

Superstar Beyonce Opens Cosmetology School

beyonce-beauty-schoolSuperstar Beyonce has entered the world of Cosmetology! She and her mother Tina Knowles opened the Beyonce Cosmetology Center this week in Brooklyn, NY. The cosmetology center is a new addition at Phoenix House, a rehabilitation center for men and women recovering from drug addiction.

Beyonce visited Phoenix House while researching her role in 2008′s Cadillac Records. She was so inspired by the work she saw being done that she donated her entire salary from the film to create a cosmetology school at the center! The presence of the school at the rehabilitation center will help clients learn a trade, enabling them to support themselves once completing their recovery treatment. Pretty neat, huh?

Not only is Beyonce gorgeous on the outside, she’s gorgeous on the inside too!

Top 11 Best and 13 Worst Cities for HairHave you ever considered that the city where you live may be to thank (or to blame) for the health and stylishness (or lack thereof) of your hair? Over at the website Total Beauty, they took several factors into consideration, and ranked some of the country’s best and worst hair cities.

Apparently, when humidity levels, pollution amounts, rainfall totals, average wind speeds, water hardness levels, and the number of beauty salons per capita come together in the perfect combination, the result can be beautiful hair. Check out some of the country’s best hair cities. Is your city helping or hurting your tresses?

The top 11 hair cities in the United States are:

Luckily for me, my city didn’t make the list of “worst hair cities,” either. But if you’re already fed up with living in one of these unlucky 13 places, maybe it’s officially time to pack your bags and head to greener pastures.

India Empowers Former Sex Workers With Cosmetology Training

Women who have been victims on India’s sex industry are receiving an opportunity for a second chance at a career and at life. In India’s capital, New Delhi, sex workers are being offered free training in hair styling, beauty and makeup. Free transportation is also being provided for the women interested in the opportunity.

Spearheading this endeavor is beauty and hair expert, Amzadd Habibb. “This is my way of giving back to the society. I have always wanted to do something for these people and I was just waiting for right opportunity and right people,” Habibb said. He has organized a 24-hour haircutting event to raise money for all the equipment needed.

If you or someone you know are interested in a new career or second chance, perhaps you should consider cosmetology school training to start down a new career path.

Using Botox to treat acne?

Botox a Treatment for Acne?Chicago plastic surgeon Anil Shah M.D. recently published the only study ever done showing that Botox lowers the skin’s oil production and thus, can be used to treat acne. “Botox definitely clears up acne,” says Dr. Shah, who has treated about 100 patients in this way.

Of course, the media and spas around the country jumped on this information. “Another acne-treatment product to throw at consumers!” Only one small large problem. It seems like Botox as an acne treatment isn’t really that great of an idea.  When tiny amounts of Botox are injected directly throughout the dermis of face, yes, oil production is limited. But, sorry Dr. Shah, seems like Botox injections are a stupid way to treat breakouts.

First, to significantly reduce oil production, very large areas of the face would need to be treated, resulting in the expressionless look for which Botox is often mocked.

Second, the procedure is difficult. Even Dr. Shah admits that “Experience here is really essential.” The muscle paralyzer has to be injected directly into a layer of skin just 1/25th of an inch thick. If it’s injected too deeply it can alter the patient’s facial expressions.

Third, Botox as an acne treatment can be prohibitively expensive. Once you find a doctor willing to treat your break-outs in this way, a treatment can cost upwards of $500 and last for only 4 months.

Of course, this is only my opinion of Botox as an acne treatment. I tend to be skeptical of most trendy things, though. And over a few years, my skepticism usually proves to be right. Atkins Diet, anyone?

Scamming in the Cosmetology Industry!

cosmetology-bill-phony-scamCalifornia cosmetology license-holders should keep an eye on their mailboxes for fishy-looking “bills.” This week, the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (Cal-BBC) posted a warning on its website of a scam targeting beauty licensees in the state.

The Cal-BBC warns that a business called the “California License Renewal Service” has been mailing fake “renewal notices” to California cosmetology licensees. These notices offer to file the licensee’s renewal application and fee with the board in exchange for a “service fee” of up to $40.

The Cal-BBC wants cosmetology professionals within the state to know that the California License Renewal Service is neither associated with, nor endorsed in any way by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. When the time comes for you to renew your cosmetology license, the board will mail you its own notice within 90 days of your license’s expiration date.

The real notice will include instructions on how to file for renewal directly with the board. Most importantly, there is no service charge associated with filing your license renewal directly with the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

Check out this copy of the phony cosmetology license bill and warn all your California beauty friends to beware. Scammers are trying to get their hands on a piece of your hard-earned money!

Hairstyling: Need for Speed?

As a beauty school student or instructor, do you think that speed matters? That is, the speed at which you cut someone’s hair.

Ivan Zoot holds the world record for the fastest haircut at a mere 55 seconds. Wow! Of course, that’s for the Guinness Book of World Records, but still. Is speed-cutting a skill that can take you anywhere? I’m just not sure.

On one hand, we’ve all heard the saying that time is money. In most other industries, a quick turn-around with a quality result is one of the most important things a business can provide.

On the other hand, when a client comes into a salon, whether it’s for a day of pampering or just a quick trim, they like to feel relaxed, right? They like to be able to sit in your chair and chat, or read a magazine – anything but feel rushed.

So, which is more important – quality or speed? What are you learning or did you learn in cosmetology school? To be quick and efficient, or to linger over each client and make them feel special? Or something in between?

How to Make Your Cosmetology Career More Lucrative

U.S. News and World Report declared hairstyling and cosmetology one of the best careers for 2009. That’s no surprise considering how well being a cosmetologist fits US News’s “Best Career” specifications:

1. Job outlook
2. Average job satisfaction
3. Difficulty of the required training
4. Prestige
5. Pay

Essentially, cosmetology tops the list because it meets the five basic qualifiers: there always seem to be openings available for qualified cosmetologists, they love their jobs, training is rapid and cost-effective, people and clients have a high opinion of professional cosmetologists and they make good money.

But what are some of the other unspoken benefits of being a licensed cosmetologist?

First, this career is a fashionista’s dream. It’s one of the rare fields with good job opportunities in which you’re rewarded for staying current on fashion and design. You gain prestige and client approval because you spent a few hours over the weekend catching up on Project Runway, E! Entertainment TV gossip, and Tabatha’s Salon Takeover.

Second, your job can’t be “outsourced” to people with questionable credentials. It might seem obvious, but a cosmetologist and their clients’ relationships are very personal. You can’t fake this type of customer service over an international phone line.
