A new option in anti-aging: Revlon and L’Oreal offer Botox for hair

Posted on: January 10th, 2012 by Heather No Comments

Although skin is often the focus of anti-aging products, the look and feel of peoples’ hair can also make them seem old. Hiding grays by coloring hair is probably the most obvious strategy for regaining a youthful appearance. However, graying isn’t the only sign of aging that hair shows. The latest anti-aging trend for hair? Botox.

No, seriously. Botox.

In August of 2010, Redken released their Time Reset line of hair products, which contains several ingredients targeted at fighting the signs of aging in hair – including the extra-special Intra-Cylane to reinforce hair strands and fill in gaps in each strand’s cuticle layer, repairing damage and creating volume.

Now L’Oreal has jumped into the ring with the release of their Professional Fiberceutic Fiber Filling Treatment. While Redken’s Time Reset products were designed primarily for at-home use at around $13-20, L’Oreal’s product is an advanced treatment that’s only available through salons. It reportedly costs in the $100 range and lasts for at least six weeks.

And it’s already rumored to be a big hit with celebrities, especially as awards season closes in. Stylist Negin Zand of West Hollywood Salone is said to utilize the treatment, and while she’s mum on the particulars, her clients include Reese Witherspoon, Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson, Carey Mulligan and new-Mrs.-Justin-Timberlake-to-be Jessica Biel.

Word on the street is that L’Oreal will soon be offering a competing line of consumer Botox-for-hair shampoos and conditioners to go up against Redken’s products.

How To Make Brittle Hair Stronger

Posted on: July 13th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

Few people seem tobeauty-school-directory-brittle-hair know this but your thyroid’s health directly affects your hair. If you have a sluggish thyroid then your hair will ultimately suffer. It will become brittle, dry and slow in regards to normal growth cycles.

Solving this issue isn’t as easy as it may look on the outside. Having a healthy thyroid is also key not only to having beautiful, healthy hair, but for overall bodily functions. Thyroid health is directly affected by your fluoride intake. Fluoride poisoning will cause the previously mentioned nasty effects on your locks.

So how do you avoid it, especially when the majority of cities in the United States now have municipal codes that require that city water has a small amount of fluoride added to it? Don’t drink that water and don’t make tea that uses tea leaves.

Tea leaves contain almost four times the fluoride of fluoride-enhanced city water. There was a thought floating around that stated fluoride could completely prevent cavities. As of today, studies are inconclusive. So how do you drink the tea you love without risking your hair?

Switch to herbal teas that contain dried herbs, spices and fruits, but no tea leaves. Some toothpastes and mouthwashes also contain a decent amount of fluoride that could cause some hair damage.

So take a stand, help your thyroid and it will help you in return by making your hair absolutely stunning!

Staying Glamorous For the Long Night Out

Posted on: November 20th, 2009 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

Keeping Makeup Fresh During a Night on the TownGetting ready to bump the beat and hit the street tonight? Clubbing is great fun and a way to keep the bonds with your ladies tight, but it can play hell on your skin and hair. You can take a few simple precautions to keep your look fresh and minimize the damage while you’re out getting dangerous.

The key to maintaining a glamorous look that’s actually low-maintenance is to “expect the unexpected.” Be prepared for conditions and hours that you might not see coming. So let’s look into it…

#1: Avoid makeup streaking
The easy precaution to this is to spritz your face with a light, non-aerosol hairspray. Some clubs get hot hot hot. Using this little trick means you’ll be dance floor-proof in seconds flat.

#2: The eyes have it
When making a first impression in clubs, restaurants or group outings make sure your eyes aren’t overdone and drawing more attention than you require. Because your eyes are the first thing that people notice about you, use lighter colors that compliment a smiling face, not darker colors that warn people away.

#3: Balance is beautiful
Dancing in a hot club can mean risking raccoon damage. Avoid putting any eyeliner pencil on the bottom and make up for it with some extra waterproof mascara on the bottom lashes. It’s basically the same effect and you won’t end up looking like you have a vitamin deficiency.

#4: Simple solution to avoid stringiness
Want to keep your hair looking beautiful all night? Comb in just a little bit of baby powder after you’ve finished setting it. Just go easy on it. Sprinkle a little bit, comb it through and you’re good to go. You can also bring a little bottle in your clutch if you need a booster during a long night.

#5: Reduce the damage the morning after
Nothing like a night out in a hot and smoky nightclub does damage to your skin and hair. A quick and easy solution to keeping it all at bay is a bath with some extra healing power. Draw a warm bath and stir in a cup of honey to help your skin rejuvenate to the soft and smooth condition it was in before.

What are your secrets to keeping yourself beautiful during a long night out? We want to hear about them!

Review of Chris Rock’s “Good Hair”

Posted on: October 27th, 2009 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

good-hair-sit-back-and-relaxChris Rock’s three-year-old daughter Lola asked him, “Daddy, why don’t I have good hair?” This launched the comedian headfirst into the topic of ‘good hair’ – commonly thought of as straight, shiny, European-looking locks. This topic has fueled debates within the African American community for generations.

Rock records this search for truth in African American hair culture in Good Hair, a thought-provoking and entertaining documentary produced by HBO Films and directed by Jeff Stilson. Good Hair tackles the topics of texture, hair relaxing, weaves, and the booming financial business of African American hair care to explore the way that hairstyles impact the relationships, lifestyles, health, wallets, and self-esteem of African American women.

It’s a bold topic – how American culture defines beauty, and the lengths that women to which women will go to in order to conform to that standard. As cosmetologists, we have a hand in this. We know how expensive and painful weaves can be. We know that often, women look even more beautiful rockin’ their natural hair than getting it relaxed. But still, African American hair is a big business – with special standards, techniques and training for stylists.

What’s great about Good Hair is that it doesn’t point any fingers or take sides. The film advocates self-love and appreciation, no matter whether women choose natural or relaxed hair.

Have you seen Good Hair? What do you think?

America’s Best and Worst Hair Cities

Posted on: October 15th, 2009 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

Top 11 Best and 13 Worst Cities for HairHave you ever considered that the city where you live may be to thank (or to blame) for the health and stylishness (or lack thereof) of your hair? Over at the website Total Beauty, they took several factors into consideration, and ranked some of the country’s best and worst hair cities.

Apparently, when humidity levels, pollution amounts, rainfall totals, average wind speeds, water hardness levels, and the number of beauty salons per capita come together in the perfect combination, the result can be beautiful hair. Check out some of the country’s best hair cities. Is your city helping or hurting your tresses?

The top 11 hair cities in the United States are:

1. Santa Barbara, California
2. Honolulu, Hawaii
3. San Diego, California
4. Anchorage, Alaska
5. San Francisco, California
6. New York, New York
7. Miami, Florida
8. Los Angeles, California
9. Denver, Colorado
10. Boston, Massachusetts
11. Chicago, Illinois

Did your town make the list? Unfortunately, mine did not. I guess that means I’ll have to take it into my own hands to try to make my hair look good – even with the high humidity and hard water. *Sigh*

Luckily for me, my city didn’t make the list of “worst hair cities,” either. But if you’re already fed up with living in one of these unlucky 13 places, maybe it’s officially time to pack your bags and head to greener pastures.

America’s 13 worst hair cities are:

1. Corpus Christi, Texas
2. Olympia, Washington
3. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
4. Las Vegas, Nevada
5. Phoenix, Arizona
6. Pensacola, Florida
7. Fresno, California
8. Houston, Texas
9. Tucson, Arizona
10. New Orleans, Louisiana
11. Cincinnati, Ohio
12. Albuquerque, New Mexico
13. Eugene, Oregon

Sorry, Corpus Christi residents. Texas may be your destination of choice if big hair is your thing, but Corpus Christi’s extreme humidity, hard water and small handful of salons make it one of the worst hair cities around. Better find an amazing, trained Texas hairstylist!

Do you have any tricks for overcoming the environmental hazards in your city? Maybe if you choose a cosmetology career, you’ll help your city win the battle against bad hair!

Straight Hair in 6 Easy Steps

Posted on: January 9th, 2009 by Beauty Schools Directory 2 Comments

If you’ve been blessed with naturally straight hair, consider yourself lucky. In fact, you can kick your curling iron to the curb, because long, straight locks are in. But, if your hair is of the wavy, curly or frizzy variety, don’t fret.

You can still get this hot look by following these 6 steps:

1. Wash it. Make sure your hair is clean when you start the straightening process, or you could end up with oily, stringy looking hair instead of the voluminous shiny tresses you’re trying to achieve.

2. Partially dry it. Instead of completely drying your hair, use a wide toothed comb and get rid of the excess water.

3. Add volumizer. When hair is still slightly damp, add mouse or another volumizer to give your hair more body. Apply from root to tip of hair.

4. Blow dry. Using a large round brush, blow dry your hair from root to tip. Don’t tug on your hair, but try to keep a bit of tension with your brush. Follow the motion of your brush with the dryer until your hair is completely dry.

5. Flat iron. Section your hair and flat iron your hair from root to tip.

6. Finish your look. Use a dime-sized amount of gloss to de-frizz your hair. This step will help manage any unruly fly aways and give your hair a pretty shine.

Easy summer beauty tips

Posted on: July 14th, 2008 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

As a beauty industry professional, you can get to know your clients pretty well. And when they come back to your chair month after month, they trust your professional opinion.

The best beauty experts keep their clients looking and feeling great long after they’ve left their chairs. Now that summer’s in full effect, with the sun beating down and the humidity at it’s highest, your clients may want some tips on staying pretty in the sweltering heat.

So what kind of advice can you give your clients on summer beauty outside the salon? The kind of advice that’s easy to follow!

Easy summer beauty tips

•By now, your clients should know that it’s important to wear SFP every time they go outside – not just in the blazing sun. A good way to accomplish this is by using a light moisturizer with SPF 30 in it, and a non-greasy SPF lotion in place of their regular morning lotion.
•It’s not just skin that needs protection! A leave-in hair conditioner with a UV filter (like Kiehl’s) will protect hair from sun damage while keeping it smooth and shiny in the wind.
•They can further protect hair from wind and chlorine damage with a shine glaze that coats the hair shaft and binds silkiness to their strands. A glaze like Fredrick Fekkai Salon Glaze Clear Shine Rinse won’t weigh hair down.
•Summer’s the time to toss thick foundation and replace them with light, even-coverage powders and portable make-up sticks. In the hot summer months, most people can get away with SPF moisturizer, a smooth concealer and a dusting of tinted powder.
•For times that they want a bit more color, your clients might want to look into multi-purpose makeup that can be applied with their fingers. A peach color stick can do triple-duty as an eye shadow, blush, and lip color. Top it off with some waterproof mascara and they’re good to go!
