Salons & Stylists Participate in National Donate Your Hair Day

Posted on: April 9th, 2012 by Heather No Comments

Cutting Long Hair to DonateA client who is ready to commit to a significant haircut that greatly reduces the length of her hair can help provide wigs for cancer patients by heading to a salon or hair event on April 27th, National Donate Your Hair Day. There you canll discover a new look and a new purpose for your old locks. Donated hair is sent to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, an organization that uses the hair to make wigs for cancer patients. It takes a minimum of six donations to make a Pantene Beautiful Lengths wig, so salons and hair events cannot be too busy on this important day!

Not all clients will have hair that qualifies for donation, but those who do receive haircuts can not only change their appearances but also make a difference in the lives of cancer patients. To qualify for donation, Pantene Beautiful Lengths requires hair be a minimum of eight-inches long when measured straight, free from chemical treatments and permanent hair color, and less than five-percent gray. Pantene Beautiful Lengths requests that hair donations be secured in elastic bands and placed in plastic bags before shipping.

Hairstylists can assist clients in making their donations by evaluating, preparing and cutting hair properly. Hair should be clean, dry and product-free. Many cuts for donation are made simply by putting the hair up in a ponytail and cutting above the elastic band. Hairstylists can help their clients with this process by measuring the length of the hair to be cut and ensuring that it is eight inches or longer before putting their scissors to work. If the hair does not exceed eight inches, it should be allowed to grow more because it does not yet qualify for donation. For those with lengths that do qualify, stylists can position the elastic band carefully or use more than one elastic band to make the most of each client’s donation amount.

Stylists can contribute to National Donate Your Hair Day by providing appropriate services for their donation-minded clients, either at salons or hair events. Many stylists nationwide are participating in National Donate Your Hair Day by familiarizing themselves with Pantene Beautiful Lengths requirements and offering the hair cutting and sometimes even donation mailing services. Some are going so far as to volunteer their time or offer the service at a discounted rate.

Do you work at a salon or beauty school that is participating in National Donate Your Hair Day? Chime in! Let us know how you’re contributing to the event!

Five Hair Styling Techniques for Curly Hair

Posted on: August 10th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-school-directory-curly-hair1Curly hair can be on tough styling challenge. It frizzes, curls back out when you don’t want it to and fights you every step of the way. The key is to try to work with your curls instead of against them. Use these five curly hairstyles to help manage the frizz and enhance your natural curl.

Straighten it out
It’s no secret that women with curls covet straight hair. But have no fear curly heads, you can straighten your hair with a flat iron and maintain a sleek, straight style all day.

Use a comb to part your hair and divide your locks into several sections. Use a hair claw to keep each section separate. Unclip one section and partition it into smaller sections. Run the flat iron through each partition from root to tip. Repeat for all sections.

Wear it long
The key here is to have enough length to weigh down some of the curls. Ask your hair stylist for a layered style that’s medium to long. Go for layers that are angled back. Use a relaxer if you’re worried about the curls taking over and curling back.

Scrunch for volume
Scrunching is one of the easiest ways to manage wet, curly hair — and makes a great no-fuss look for summer. After towel drying, work a curl-defining cream through your hair near the scalp. Then, scrunch the tips of your hair with a curl-enhancing cream to infuse moisture and refine curls. Lastly, boost volume with a blowdryer using a diffuser attachment to maintain the shape of your style.

Clip it
Creating updos with long, curly hair is more difficult than with straight hair. Curls tend to take up more space and prevent the claw from attaining maximum hold. But there’s an easy fix: Use claws with multiple thin tines instead of those with only five or six thick tines. Secure hair in a low ponytail first for more support.

Embrace bangs
Women with curly hair often avoid bangs, as they require a lot of maintenance. However, bangs are especially stylish. This is particularly true when paired with long, wavy hair. Try thick, long, sidestepped bangs with long layers. These can be flat ironed in seconds, eliminating the hassle of fringe cuts.

Where Hair Extensions Come From

Posted on: October 21st, 2009 by Beauty Schools Directory 3 Comments

Hair Extensions from IndiaHave you ever wondered where hair extensions come from? According to Oprah.com, 1000 tons of human hair are imported into the U.S. every year. The finest quality hair comes from India.

One Indian landmark in particular is famous for exporting human hair. The Venkateswara Temple in Southern India earns around 18 million a year selling hair to exporters. As one of Hinduism’s holiest sites, worshipers to this temple leave an offering of their hair for Lord Venkateswara. Cutting off hair for religious reasons is part of a ritual called tonsuring.

Some salons sell this “temple hair” anywhere from $2000 to $4000 depending on the length of the extensions.
Hair from India is also collected by village women who pool their hair together and sell it to exporters. Other women collect hair after it falls out naturally and sell it.

If you want to learn how to do hair extensions and become a professional hairstylist, find cosmetology schools near you.

America’s Best and Worst Hair Cities

Posted on: October 15th, 2009 by Beauty Schools Directory 2 Comments

Top 11 Best and 13 Worst Cities for HairHave you ever considered that the city where you live may be to thank (or to blame) for the health and stylishness (or lack thereof) of your hair? Over at the website Total Beauty, they took several factors into consideration, and ranked some of the country’s best and worst hair cities.

Apparently, when humidity levels, pollution amounts, rainfall totals, average wind speeds, water hardness levels, and the number of beauty salons per capita come together in the perfect combination, the result can be beautiful hair. Check out some of the country’s best hair cities. Is your city helping or hurting your tresses?

The top 11 hair cities in the United States are:

1. Santa Barbara, California
2. Honolulu, Hawaii
3. San Diego, California
4. Anchorage, Alaska
5. San Francisco, California
6. New York, New York
7. Miami, Florida
8. Los Angeles, California
9. Denver, Colorado
10. Boston, Massachusetts
11. Chicago, Illinois

Did your town make the list? Unfortunately, mine did not. I guess that means I’ll have to take it into my own hands to try to make my hair look good – even with the high humidity and hard water. *Sigh*

Luckily for me, my city didn’t make the list of “worst hair cities,” either. But if you’re already fed up with living in one of these unlucky 13 places, maybe it’s officially time to pack your bags and head to greener pastures.

America’s 13 worst hair cities are:

1. Corpus Christi, Texas
2. Olympia, Washington
3. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
4. Las Vegas, Nevada
5. Phoenix, Arizona
6. Pensacola, Florida
7. Fresno, California
8. Houston, Texas
9. Tucson, Arizona
10. New Orleans, Louisiana
11. Cincinnati, Ohio
12. Albuquerque, New Mexico
13. Eugene, Oregon

Sorry, Corpus Christi residents. Texas may be your destination of choice if big hair is your thing, but Corpus Christi’s extreme humidity, hard water and small handful of salons make it one of the worst hair cities around. Better find an amazing, trained Texas hairstylist!

Do you have any tricks for overcoming the environmental hazards in your city? Maybe if you choose a cosmetology career, you’ll help your city win the battle against bad hair!

Formal Up Do Tutorial

Posted on: April 21st, 2008 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

Looking for a quick and easy way to create a formal up do? We can show you how in a few simple steps! You can also watch a video tutorial of this style.

how to do formal hair style

Here we have Becca; she has gorgeous hair and needs some up do ideas to make her wedding photos special.

Formal hair Before

If you have someone with a lot of hair like Becca you need to start by placing the back sections of hair in pony-tails. If you want more volume on top you would back comb the hair prior to putting it up.

Next put a touch of pomade in the remaining hair. Take a section of hair underneath the bottom pony-tail and place it across the head, securing it with a bobby pin.

Do the same on the other side.
Formal updo

Start taking sections of hair and make loop shapes, securing these with bobby pins as well. It works best to tame fly-aways with a touch of hair spray along the way.

Continue the loop design around the head, checking symmetry along the way.

After you have completed the back section, take some sections from the front, pull back loosely to create volume on top and secure.

wedding hair how-to

Do you have the advantage of having long, swooping bangs that can be shaped like Becca has? You can use these to create a wonderful, elegant curve to this up do by securing all the bangs to one side.

Bangs

Now, don’t forget to use plenty of hair spray. This style has to hold through hours of weather, mingling, dancing and photos!

Clip in hair extensions for thicker hair

Posted on: March 19th, 2008 by Beauty Schools Directory 3 Comments

Do you want fuller, thicker hair? Learn to double your hair volume and create fantastic curls using clip-in hair extensions. You can find them at many salons and beauty supply stores, and they are very easy to put in. We explain below or you can watch the video.

Hair extentions

Kari is challenged with fine, thin hair. Let’s see what we can do to change her look.

Before we put in the extensions, let’s begin by sectioning off the hair and spraying it lightly with hairspray.  After that, start curling her hair – section by section. Use a Chi iron for this procedure. Continue the process until the entire head is curled.

Curling hair

Next, loosen the curls slightly by finger combing the hair. This will make the curls a better match for the extensions.

Now we’re ready for the extensions. Place 2 sections of extensions in the back of the head. To do this, part the hair horizontally and clip in the extension.

Do the same on each side. It’s that easy!

Wow! Look at all that gorgeous hair! It blends perfectly with her natural hair.

This process is a great alternative for people who don’t have the time or the money for extensions that are sewn into the hair.
