Makeup Trends: The Hottest Makeup Looks for Spring 2012

Posted on: November 15th, 2011 by Becca No Comments

The Spring 2012 fashion shows were full of two distinct makeup looks: natural, ethereal beauty or hard-edged “glamazons.” No matter which is your preference, each aesthetic can easily be accomplished in a daily look. We bring you the top makeup trends we saw coming down the runway during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

Vintage-inspired makeup was the all a flutter amongst modern eyes and pouty lips. Easy does it for the spring by keeping the focus on the eyes or mouth.

Red Hot Lips
Many designers, including YSL and Dior, put the classic red lip on their models. Choose a shade that suits you skin tone so that the color does not wash you out.

Fresh Eyes
Twiggy made the cat eye iconic, but we saw fresh takes on this look by everyone from Dolce & Gabanna to Armani. We saw it defined and simple with no outrageous lines extending from the eye socket. We also saw bold, non-tapering cat eyes and cat eyes in color. Liquid liner works best for the precision required.

Strong Brows
Think Brooke Shields. Full eyebrows were all the rage at Jill Sander, Burberry, Derek Lam and more. If you do not have naturally strong eyebrows, then it can be created using a dark eye pencil by drawing a dramatic arch to make them stand out.

Silent film stars seemed to take over the stages like Gucci, Rodarte, Ungaro and Dsquared thanks to the heavy dark eye that was found on models. The darker and stronger the eye, then the more Gothic this look seemed. Try it in navy for a look that will not be as punk.

Sun-Kissed Skin
Michael Kors, Christopher Kane, Isabel Marant and more sent their models down the runway in an all-out glow inspired by outdoorsy athleticism. You can get this look by using a peach shimmer bronzer all over your face for fresh and sunny look.

White Silver Metallics
Chanel and Ralph Lauren washed their models eyelids in shimmering whites, grays and silvers. Go for subtle moonlit glow or dramatic shine – either way you’ll be ahead of a hot trend.

Make a statement like Miu Miu or Richard Chai or Rebecca Taylor and add vibrant color somewhere on an otherwise nude face. Think orange eye shadow or blue mascara for a fun look that will make every day more interesting.

Doll Lashes
We’re all always looking for a mascara that will make our lashes longer and fuller, but why not follow Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs and just go for fabulous fake lashes that make your eyes seem bigger and give you that fantastic, doll-like look?

Glittery Eyes
They’re not just for Halloween anymore. Fashion Week makeup artists for Dsquared and Fendi utilized everything from tin foil to fairy dust to create super-shiny looks. Maybe a bit much for every day, but don’t be afraid of sparkle this spring season.

Rosy Lips
If the vampy, red lip look is not your style, take the approach of Peter Som and Oscar de la Renta and go for barely-there roses and pinks. Use a creamy lipstick or – if you have natural pink pigment in your puckers – just go for a light gloss.

Zombie Makeup Tutorial for Halloween

Posted on: October 26th, 2011 by Becca No Comments

We know, we know – if you want to rock out the trendiest Halloween costume for 2011, there’s only one way to go: zombie.

Once upon a time, chatter about zombie apocalypses was relegated to the true fanatics, but now – thanks to The Walking Dead and a resurgence of zombie flicks like The Crazies – everyone’s got the rotting undead on their braaaaaiiins.

And who doesn’t love a good zombie costume, right? It’s easy, it’s cheap, and it embraces some of the best parts of the Halloween holiday – the scary, the gross, and the muddied line between dead and alive.

Still, there’s one big part of the costume that you need to tackle: zombie makeup. If you’re looking for zombie Halloween makeup tutorials, you’re sure to find quite a few, from the straightforward to the seriously ick-inducing.

Our favorite is xteeener’s zombie makeup tutorial in association with MonsterBuster Entertainment, which walks a fine line between “I guess you’re kind of dead” and “Oh god, ew – I can’t even look at you.” Bonus points because her zombie makeup addresses other places than just the face.

How do you like your zombie makeup? Gross and gooey? Or a little more newly dead?

Beauty picks for fall

Posted on: September 13th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-ts200266549Times change, seasons change and fashion does, too! (Thankfully – the ’90s can keep their neon mascara.) So, switching out your beauty regimen should coincide pretty easily with switching out your seasonal wardrobes. But how do you know how to make it work? We’ll tell you!

One thing that’s in style every season is a clear complexion and a good foundation. Keep moisturizing, exfoliating and fighting blemishes. And make sure you’re not using the same shade of foundation year-round. It can either make you look too pale in the summer or too dark in the winter. Not good! Once you’ve got the facial basics down, dive into the details:

Animal Prints
To go along with those fabulous leopard-print heels you’re wearing, try neutrals and browns on your eyes, lips and cheeks. The prints are bold and so should you be. You can also take a walk on the wild side with hand-painted or transfer prints for your nails. Rawr!

The Blues
For once, they’re a good thing. Cobalt blue is especially hot – think bright, bold true blue, almost like a sapphire. For a dramatic eye, try an opaque shade on your lids with some black mascara. Or, if you’re not quite that daring, mix it into your nail polish collection.

Heavy Metal
Step into the spotlight with metallic shades this fall. Sparkle with silver, glimmer with gold and be brilliant in bronze. Whether you go for a light layer or serious shimmer, these hues work perfectly on your eyes and nails.

Lash Attack
Eyelashes: the only facial hair a girl wants. And right now, the more and the bigger, the better. Mascara is no longer a one-size-fits-all product. Whether you need to lengthen, curl or thicken your lashes, there’s a tube out there for you. Take it one step further with some false lashes for an extra bold look.

Hair Beware
Volume is the name of the game when it comes to hairstyles this fall. Get pumped with volumizing shampoos, conditioners and styling products that will give you a lot of lift. And if your style starts to sag, bulk it back up with a dry shampoo.

Nail It
The fashion industry has brought back the ’30s with the appearance of half-moon manicures on the runway. Think either an unpainted or different-colored semicircle right above your cuticle. Perfect for two-tone animal prints, no?

There you have it – fall fashion for your face and nails! Day or night, simple or dramatic, these trends can put you on the cutting edge of seasonal beauty.

Grammy Beauty 2010

Posted on: February 2nd, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

Grammy night 2010 was full of hot music performances and high fashion that kept everyone talking well into the next day. But let’s not overlook the beauty! Take a look at some of our favorite beauty looks of the 2010 Grammys and the products you can use to recreate them at home or on your clients.

carrie-underwood

Carrie Underwood’s look was all glamour for the Grammys! She went for the smokey eye and nude lip combo, which is a modern classic. Try Lauren Luke My Smokey Classics and My Glossy Lips Complete Makeup Palette to recreate Carrie’s look with just one set of products!

Carrie’s shoulder length bob was incredibly shiny and featured a sultry side-swept bang. To get locks that shine like the American Idol star’s, smooth on a dime sized amount of CHI Silk Infusion before styling hair with a flat iron.

taylor-swiftTaylor Swift channeled old Hollywood for her big night at the Grammys. Her wavy ‘do, kohl rimmed eyes and sheer red lip color was a blast from the beauty past! Even the straightest hair can mimic Taylor’s sexy waves with the Rsession Tools Nalu Waver.

To get Taylor’s makeup look, line the upper and lower eyelid with Make Up For Ever Kohl Pencil for dramatic effect, and finish the look with Lipstick Queen Medieval Lipstick for a sheer burst of crimson color, and a healthy dose of Vitamin E.

lady-gagaLady Gaga not only turns heads with her performances, but with her show-stopping beauty looks. While this look in its entirety is not for every day wear (or the faint of heart) there are some great things to be pulled from this look.

For starters, Lady Gaga’s eye makeup application was impeccable! The strong brow, metallic eye color and lush lashes made for a bold and dramatic eye look. Create a bold, but natural, eye brow with MAC Eye Brows pencil. Turn to MAC Eye Shadow in Electra and MAC 6 Lash false lashes for perfect duplicates of the products used on Lady Gaga.

For a mod look, recreate Lady Gaga’s pastel pink pout with Lime Crime Candyfuture Lipstick in Great Pink Planet. If you really want to take a walk on the wild side, clip in a few Yellow Clip On Hair Extensions to bring out your inner Lady Gaga!

So, what do you think of these beauty looks? Will you be trying any of them? What celeb had your favorite look on Grammy night? Let us hear it!

New Makeup Campaign: Bobbi Brown’s Pretty Powerful

Posted on: January 21st, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory 1 Comment

On January 12th, famed makeup artist Bobbi Brown launched her newest campaign, “Pretty Powerful.” A quote from Bobbi Brown’s website talks about the inspiration behind the campaign, “This season I was inspired to ask my friends – not models – to be the faces for my new campaign. They’re pretty to begin with, but with just a few simple tweaks, they look their absolute, most confident best. That’s pretty powerful.”

Brown’s “Pretty Powerful” campaign stays in line with her philosophy of “be who you are beauty,” which means highlighting your best features, not hiding your flaws. She is also holding a “Pretty Powerful Video Contest” starting this week. You can share your “strongest” makeup look and your favorite beauty a tips – a huge opportunity for makeup school students! The prize? Three of the video contestants will be selected to win a trip to New York to get a personal makeup lesson from the Bobbi Brown! This is a big deal, as any makeup artist in training knows.

Staying Glamorous For the Long Night Out

Posted on: November 20th, 2009 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

Keeping Makeup Fresh During a Night on the TownGetting ready to bump the beat and hit the street tonight? Clubbing is great fun and a way to keep the bonds with your ladies tight, but it can play hell on your skin and hair. You can take a few simple precautions to keep your look fresh and minimize the damage while you’re out getting dangerous.

The key to maintaining a glamorous look that’s actually low-maintenance is to “expect the unexpected.” Be prepared for conditions and hours that you might not see coming. So let’s look into it…

#1: Avoid makeup streaking
The easy precaution to this is to spritz your face with a light, non-aerosol hairspray. Some clubs get hot hot hot. Using this little trick means you’ll be dance floor-proof in seconds flat.

#2: The eyes have it
When making a first impression in clubs, restaurants or group outings make sure your eyes aren’t overdone and drawing more attention than you require. Because your eyes are the first thing that people notice about you, use lighter colors that compliment a smiling face, not darker colors that warn people away.

#3: Balance is beautiful
Dancing in a hot club can mean risking raccoon damage. Avoid putting any eyeliner pencil on the bottom and make up for it with some extra waterproof mascara on the bottom lashes. It’s basically the same effect and you won’t end up looking like you have a vitamin deficiency.

#4: Simple solution to avoid stringiness
Want to keep your hair looking beautiful all night? Comb in just a little bit of baby powder after you’ve finished setting it. Just go easy on it. Sprinkle a little bit, comb it through and you’re good to go. You can also bring a little bottle in your clutch if you need a booster during a long night.

#5: Reduce the damage the morning after
Nothing like a night out in a hot and smoky nightclub does damage to your skin and hair. A quick and easy solution to keeping it all at bay is a bath with some extra healing power. Draw a warm bath and stir in a cup of honey to help your skin rejuvenate to the soft and smooth condition it was in before.

What are your secrets to keeping yourself beautiful during a long night out? We want to hear about them!

Stop giving the “evil eye!”

Posted on: June 13th, 2008 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

We recently had a reader ask for our advice on eye makeup – she has dark hair and eyes and uses black eye liner, but has been getting not-so-rave reviews from her friends and family. She may have the kindest heart, but her entourage says she looks evil!

This is a common problem when using black eyeliner – it’s easy to get out of control and end up looking more like Marylin Manson than you had ever hoped. So here are a few tips we’ve learned through our years of experimenting with makeup that we’d like to share with you!

1) Less is more: if you want to use black eyeliner, go easy on the application. Lightly line the outside corner of both lids instead of evenly lining all the way across. It draws subtle attention to your eyes, without that scary look. Another option – line only your lid near the upper lash base, to give your lashes a boost.

2) Try an alternate color liner, such as brown, like one of my faves from MAC. Lighter color liners will still give you the definition you seek, but are more natural looking and less noticeable as makeup.

3) Use eye shadow and a fine tipped brush instead of eye liner. Use a deep charcoal or brown for more dramatic effects, or medium toned shadows for a more natural look. If you’re wearing a brightly colored top, try a bit of brightly colored shadow to line your eyes to set things off a bit more. My trick for applying shadow to my lower lash base is to wet a fine tipped brush before dipping in the shadow. This ensures a clean application and you don’t have to worry about the loose, excess powder sprinkling down your cheeks!

Hopefully, by experimenting with some of these, you can change your look from goth to glam!

Skin care for any season

Posted on: April 24th, 2008 by Shana 1 Comment

“Finally, here is a skin care line that is inspired by and responsive to the seasons, so your skin can adapt seamlessly to nature’s cycles.” – Perianne web site

As we dive full-force into spring, I’ve noticed that my winter skincare routine isn’t going to cut it much longer. I apply the heavy moisturizer I used through the cold months, and I feel like I need to mop it off with a paper towel 20 minutes later.

It’s time to switch from 3 different kinds of heavy creams to a toner and a light moisturizer. I started my search on the Internet, and thank goodness! I ran across what is probably the most genius beauty invention since the false eyelashes.

Let me introduce you to Perianne skincare. Perianne has specific lines of products that correlate with the seasons, so that your fall/winter routine and spring/summer routine work together in harmony, without failed attempts at finding the next great brand. Best of all, the products are all natural and organic. Way to go green, Perianne!

Here’s some of what founder and creator Cora Michael has this to say on the Perianne web site:

“No single line offered what I needed, which was basically two versions of itself: one for spring/summer and one for fall/winter. But switching products and brands too often led to unpredictable results, and at worst irritation or allergic reactions. My skin was always confused, and the cost of trying all those new products was high!

I created Perianne to answer these problems. Finally, here is a skin care line that is inspired by and responsive to the seasons, so your skin can adapt seamlessly to nature’s cycles. This is especially important in today’s world, with climate change leading to more extreme and unpredictable shifts in temperature and weather.”

Right now, only the fall/winter line is available for purchase online. I’ll be checking back often to see when I can buy the spring/summer line! Once I’ve tried it, I’ll give you all an update!

Looking for more information on the Perianne skincare line? For The Love Of Beauty blog has a question and answer session with Perianne Skincare Founder and Creator Cora Michael. Check it out!
