It might be difficult at first to imagine what a cosmetology school just outside of Charlotte could have to do with the making of The Hunger Games, but a handful of students and educators from the Paul Mitchell School in Gastonia, North Carolina were called upon to help create many of the hairstyles and hairpieces that brought the hundreds of characters to life in the wildly popular thriller released in theaters last month.

The first Hunger Games movie involves an array of elaborate and colorful outfits and hairstyles, so professionals from all over the world were called upon to bring the incredibly ambitious project to life. For the students that were fortunate enough to work on the movie, the experience was no doubt unforgettable, albeit busy and demanding. It certainly put their hair and makeup skills they’re learning in cosmetology school to the test. The majority of the scenes were filmed on location in North Carolina, so none of the staff or students had to travel far to get a taste of Hollywood.

Evidently, the workload of preparing over 700 hairpieces for The Hunger Games was too much for Academy Award winner Linda Flowers, who called the Paul Mitchell School last summer in hopes of securing some help for the project. Instructors Rex Faile and Bryce Carey jumped at the opportunity to help their esteemed colleague from Los Angeles.Faile, Carey and their pupils were assigned the task of dying, braiding and otherwise prepping hundreds of wigs for the actors and the cameras. Bright and vibrant colors were employed whenever possible, allowing many young cosmetologists to explore the properties of dye colors that they rarely get a chance to use in a typical salon or school environment, such as silver or green. They result of an approach that left no stone unturned is a visually captivating movie that holds the audience on the edge of their seats throughout.

In total, it took over 60 hairstylists and interns the better part of a humid and muggy Southern summer to complete more than 700 hairpieces for The Hunger Games, along with 4,000 eyelashes and 2,000 fingernails. Many of the students and interns were ecstatic to be working alongside a few of the stars that they’ve been admiring on the big screen for years. Naturally, many of them are seeing the film several times in order to be able to properly appreciate their own workSaid one young designer that worked on set to reporters, “I see Katniss walk by with the braids and I’m thinking, ‘That’s my work.’” While a movie of the size and scope of The Hunger Games may not come through North Carolina again for a long time, the skills and resume building that the many students from Paul Mitchell School attained will likely lead them to other interesting jobs in the near future.

Paul Mitchell Schools Donate $106,250 to No Limits

Posted on: May 18th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

At their biannual owners Summit on May 1 in Newport Beach, CA, the nationwide network of Paul Mitchell cosmetology schools raised $106,250 for No Limits, the country’s only theater group for deaf and hard-of-hearing children. They raised the money in one day, through a silent auction in which numerous school owners and educators donated a day (or more) of education, and renowned artist Vladimir Prodanovich donated a painting valued at over $7,000.

Appearing at the Summit on behalf of No Limits, deaf comedian and motivational speaker Kathy Buckley showed a clip from the wildly popular TV show Glee, in which deaf singer and No Limits alumnus John Autry II performs a solo of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” In the program, his classmates accompany him through sign language, and the Glee choir joins in for a memorable performance between both schools.

As the clip ended, the real-life John Autry joined Kathy on stage and performed the song again, to the delight and surprise of the assembled Paul Mitchell school owners.

John is the reason we have No Limits today,” Kathy explained. At the age of seven, John began working with Michelle Christie-Adams, a highly qualified teacher dedicated to bringing speech to deaf and hearing-impaired children. When she discovered how much John loved music and performing, Michelle started the No Limits theater group especially for him.

Since then, the children of No Limits have performed in more than 60 productions in over 10 states, reaching an audience of over 30,000 people. No Limits has been featured in the New York Times, Newsday, Oprah, and other media outlets. Michelle has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the Top 100 Heroes award from Volvo for Life and the George Washington Medal of Honor from the Freedom Foundation.

Paul Mitchell Beauty Schools Partner with Local Salons for Creative Infusion

Posted on: January 25th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

beauty-schools-creative-infusion1Local salons coming together has been a popular topic lately from the big screen on shows like Jerseylicious to local venues like Paul Mitchell Beauty Schools in Overland Park, KS. A great way for beauty school students to get more involved in their community, Creative Infusion involved six salons across the Kansas metro working with Paul Mitchell Beauty Schools to create high-end hair design and makeup looks.

The Creative Infusion project is showing these smaller sized salons that they can work with their competition (or peers) and market themselves, while growing stronger as artists. “If you have a small business you’re on your own you don’t really have those resources,” said Marty Serroque, which is why Creative Infusion is so beneficial.

It is also showing the public the beauty industry is more than just tons of hairspray and a great spray tan. Although the girls of Jerseylicious have a way of “doing it big,” a local event like Creative Infusion helps show the public what reality really is. “Reality TV has given us a way to speak from behind the chair,” says salon owner Roshanna Campbell said. “Sometimes though it can be over the top.” One of the most unique aspects of Creative Infusion was models were able to try these tips at home.

“I’m really impressed with how it turned out so I’m definitely going to take little elements from it,” said model Sarah Wildhaber. And doing just that, taking tips and creating great customer service between salon owner and client is how the word spreads and business grows.

Paul Mitchell Schools FUNraising Campaign Launches New Web Site

Posted on: January 14th, 2011 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

The Paul Mitchell Schools FUNraising Campaign launched a new version of its Web site this week. The new site includes a complete history of the seven-year “FUNraising” campaign, which has raised and donated over $4.6 million to a variety of charitable organizations.

In accordance with the campaign’s commitment to keep administrative costs low, the team who created the new site donated their time and talent to the project. Web developers Blind Acre Media of Columbus, Ohio, and well-known writer and editor Gail Fink, who also manage the Paul Mitchell Schools Web site, newsletters, and other publications, developed the new FUNraising site free of charge.

“In our seven years of FUNraising, every dollar raised has gone directly to the charities,” said Paul Mitchell Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh. “We have no overhead: no salaries, no rent, and no utilities. Our accountants, attorneys, and board of directors all donate their time, and we are extremely grateful to all of them. As a result of their incredible generosity, our FUNraising expenses are little to none: the cost incurred in raising the $4.6 million has been just $68,462—an amazingly low 1.5%, compared to the national average of 25%. In other words, we don’t spend $100 trying to raise $200!”

The original Web site included information about the annual Magic of Memories Dinner, a gala event that celebrates all of the participating schools and announces the FUNraising total for the year. Claybaugh notes that the new site “tells the complete history of our FUNraising campaign, introduces our celebrity partners and the organizations we raise money for, and explains where the money goes and how it is used.”

A “fan favorite” on the new site is last year’s highlights video, featuring singing superstar Donny Osmond entertaining at the 2010 event. The new site also includes downloadable press releases for the media; photo albums showing how the talented and creative Future Professionals and staff members raise the money; video and audio messages from this year’s celebrity partners Betty White, Dolly Parton, Donny and Marie Osmond, Fran Drescher, and Leeza Gibbons, who has been with the campaign since its inception; and a timeline showing the campaign’s history, including photos and quotes from past partners Larry King, Vidal Sassoon, and more.

“We’re especially excited about an upcoming feature: an online donation portal, so people can contribute directly to their chosen charities through the Web site,” Winn adds.

The 2011 campaign kicks off on February 1. Visit www.paulmitchellschoolsfunraising.org for more information.

Paul Mitchell Crowns America’s “Next Top Photo Stylists”

Posted on: November 18th, 2010 by Beauty Schools Directory No Comments

paul-mitchell-beauty-schoolsThree talented future professionals from the nationwide network of Paul Mitchell Schools have been named “Next Top Photo Stylist” by Paul Mitchell Editorial Director Lucie Doughty and a panel of distinguished judges.

Elizabeth Ankenman from Paul Mitchell The School – St. George, Erik McEwen from Paul Mitchell The School – Sherman Oaks, and Heather Burnworth of Paul Mitchell The School – Salt Lake City were named winners in the recent competition, which drew over 130 entries. The three winners will travel to Los Angeles in January for a two-day photo shoot with Paul Mitchell Editorial Director Lucie Doughty. Each winner will shoot one model with three separate style looks.

All of the hopeful contestants set up their own photo shoots, which included selecting models and photographers and designing and executing the wardrobe, hair, and makeup. Each contestant submitted photos for five out of seven categories, including texture, avante garde, contemporary classic, color, cutting, male, and long hair upstyle.

“The entries were such a high standard,” Lucie said, “I was just amazed by the creativity and technical ability. The quality of the styling and their ability to do color and translate trends and techniques were really fantastic. It was tough picking the winners because so many were good. They all should be really proud of what they submitted.”

Lucie, who has put together countless winning photo shoots for the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) and numerous other competitions said, “Competing gets you thinking about your craft, how you can perfect your work and put your inspirations and ideas together as a story. Whether you’re doing a fashion show or photo shoot, or putting together a portfolio, it’s a demonstration of your work and creativity. There’s a lot of value in entering a contest like this one, and it’s something that all future and salon professionals should do an ongoing basis. It keeps you inspired and pushing for the next level.”
