Make Makeup Work with the New Hair Hue

So, it’s the start of a new year. A new decade, even! And you or your clients may be feeling a little complacent with the same old style. That means it’s time to shake things up!

As I’ve learned over the years, changing my hair color every once in a while can be a fun, relatively easy way to get a new look and to get un-bored with my current hair situation. But some stylists recommend that if you’re making a fairly drastic color change, you’ll need to adjust your makeup routine as well.

As any redhead, blonde or brunette will tell you, make up that works on one girl is not guaranteed to look awesome on everyone. So, here’s a quick guide that you can either use for yourself, or pass on to your clients, that can offer some good makeup and hair matching advice:

For going from blond to brunette: Darker locks change the contrast between the skin and hair and can make the skin look more easily washed out. To keep your face looking vibrant next to your darkened locks, look for products with light-reflecting elements. Peach and coral colors on your skin can be a great way to make your face look warmer.

For going from brunette to blond: Not all blondes can handle the heavier, darker makeup looks that brunettes can get away with. Anything too bold or intense might look harsher on a blonde. Instead, try soft muted colors like pale pinks, mauve-y browns, or nudes.

For going to red or reddish brown: Our eyes are trained to associate harmony and similarity in colors with beauty, so when switching to a hair color in the auburn family, look for makeup products with similar hues. Avoid cool colors like blues and purples, and stick with warm shades like champagne, tawny or even soft grays.
