In order to obtain a license in cosmetology, esthetics or nail technology in the state of Delaware, students must complete the requirements listed below from the Delaware State Board of Cosmetology. When getting a Delaware cosmetology license or other beauty practitioner certification, you must attend a licensed school and complete the state of Delaware's minimum required training hours and then take the state's cosmetology board exams. After finishing your training, you are required to pass a licensing exam issue by the Delaware State Board of Cosmetology. Once you pass this exam, you will receive your Delaware cosmetology license shortly thereafter. You're now able to work in the state of Delaware. Keep in mind, even though Delaware may not require continuing education to renew some licenses, you may wish to consider taking cosmetology continuing education hours in Delaware annually to stay current on the latest trends. Delaware Board of Cosmetology License Requirements

  • COSMETOLOGIST LICENSE: 1500 Hours / 3000 Hours Apprenticeship
  • BARBER LICENSE: 1500 Hours / 3000 Hours Apprenticeship
  • NAIL TECHNICIAN LICENSE: 300 Hours / 600 Hours Apprenticeship
  • ESTHETICIAN LICENSE: 600 Hours / 1200 Hours Apprenticeship
  • COSMETOLOGY INSTRUCTOR LICENSE: Cosmetology License + 500 Training Hours OR 250 Training Hours and 2 Years Active Work Experience
  • MASSAGE THERAPIST LICENSE: 500 Hours Therpaist, 300 Hours Technician

Delaware Cosmetology License Renewal

The renewal fee is the same as the original licensing fee. Barbers, nail technicians and estheticians must renew their licenses by March 31 of even-numbered years. Cosmetologists must renew their licenses by October 31 of even-numbered years. Delaware does not currently require continuing education hours to renew your license.

Cosmetology License Reciprocity (Transfer) in Delaware

The Delaware Board of Cosmetology & Barbering can help with cosmetology license transfers. Delaware accepts applications for reciprocity for licensees from other states. The first method for transferring your license says that if your home state's training and testing requirements are equivalent to Delaware's, no notarization or testing are required. The second method of transferring your cosmetology license to Delaware is if your home state's requirements are not equivalent, you will need a notarized statement from your employer verifying that you were licensed and worked for at least 5 years. The cost of transferring your license to DE varies from $60 to $97.
