In order to obtain a license in cosmetology, esthetics or nail technology in the state of New York, students must complete the requirements listed below from the New York State Board of Cosmetology. When getting a New York cosmetology license or other beauty practitioner certification, you must attend a licensed school and complete the state of New York's minimum required training hours and then take the state's cosmetology board exams. After finishing your training, you are required to pass a licensing exam issued by the New York State Board of Cosmetology. New York only offers the cosmetology board exams in the English language. Once you pass this exam, you will receive your New York cosmetology license shortly thereafter. You're now able to work in the state of New York. Keep in mind, even though New York may not require continuing education to renew some licenses, you may wish to consider taking cosmetology continuing education hours in New York annually to stay current on the latest trends. New York Board of Cosmetology License Requirements
- COSMETOLOGIST LICENSE: 1000 Hours
- NATURAL HAIRSTYLIST LICENSE: 300 Hours
- ESTHETICIAN LICENSE: 600 Hours
- NAIL TECHNICIAN LICENSE: 250 Hours
- BARBER LICENSE: 2-Year Apprenticeship
- COSMETOLOGY INSTRUCTOR LICENSE: Cosmetology License + Work Experience
- WAXING LICENSE: 75 Hours
- MASSAGE THERAPIST LICENSE: 1000 Hours
New York Cosmetology License Renewal
Cosmetology licenses in New York must be renewed every four years and the license renewal fee is $40. No continuing education hours are currently required, but CEUs are always recommended to stay current in the industry.
Cosmetology License Reciprocity (Transfer) in New York
New York has specific reciprocity arrangements for different states and licenses. Each request for transfer by reciprocity requires the certification from the cosmetology board in your home state, and a completed cosmetology or other license application with the $40 application fee. The states below offer licensure in New York by either reciprocity or endorsement. If your state is not listed or if you do not meet the minimum requirements, you may be required to a) take additional classes for more training hours, or b) take the New York practical and written board exams.
Cosmetologist Reciprocity - Alaska, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Virginia just require current licensure. Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and Washington D.C. all require current licensure plus varying amounts of work experience.
Cosmetology Endorsement - New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming have cosmetology licensure by endorsement.
Barber Reciprocity - Maine, Pennsylvania, New York have direct reciprocity. If your home state is Maine, New Mexico or Pennsylvania, the Dept. of St ate will waive your NY State practical exam requirement if you supply an original certificate with the raised seal from your home state, along with the Barber Operator Application.
Esthetician Endorsement - Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Washington D.C., Maine, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming have esthetician licensure by endorsement.
Nail Technician Endorsement - Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Washington D.C., Maine, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah and Wyoming have nail technician licensure by endorsement.
Natural Hair Styling Endorsement - Pennsylvania has natural hair styling licensure by endorsement.
