If you choose to work for a salon or rent a chair at a salon, you may expect tips on top of your regular wages. License Requirements in Georgia

Your work as a cosmetologist, nail technician, barber, or esthetician is overseen by the Georgia Board of Cosmetology. While attending an Atlanta beauty school, you'll want to make sure that you meet the Board's educational requirements:

  • Cosmetologist: 1,500 hours
  • Barber: 1,500 hours
  • Esthetician: 1,000 hours
  • Nail technician: 525 hours

You have to take a comprehensive written and practical exam. After you pass this, you receive your license. You have to renew it by March 31 of even-numbered years.

Beauty Connections and Public Transit

If you want to make the most out of your education, you could really benefit from membership in a professional development group! These groups are designed to connect beauty professionals, share legislative updates, and help members find job openings. By joining as a student member, you'll build a network of contacts that can really help you once you're ready to begin your job search. One of the largest associations in the Atlanta area is the Georgia Spa & Salon Association.

Taking advantage of public transit can make it easy for you to travel all over the city for school and work. The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority offers bus and rail service. They have a university pass that may allow you to ride for a reduced fare.
