Beauty Schools and Cosmetology Schools in Seattle, WA

As the largest city in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle plays a big role in the country's beauty industry. While the city itself has over 630,000 residents, the Seattle metropolitan area includes nearly 3.5 million potential cosmetology clients.

You can start a career in Seattle's beauty industry by attending one of the many cosmetology schools in this area. You can get the skills you need to become a licensed cosmetologist, esthetician, nail technician, barber, or other beauty professional. Seattle schools include large cosmetology schools and smaller schools that offer training in one specialized area.

Beauty Salaries in Seattle

There are many different careers you can pursue in the beauty industry, all of which come with their own potential income range. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the following salary ranges for Seattle beauty workers:

  • Barbers: $19,200 to $48,970
  • Cosmetologists: $19,970 to $69,090
  • Manicurists: $19,820 to $33,860
  • Shampooers: $19,230 to $28,900
  • Skincare specialists: $19,220 to $48,700

Not only is your salary affected by experience and seniority, it will vary depending on what type of job you get after completing your training. If you work for a salon, you may earn a base wage and earn tips. This route allows you to benefit from the salon's reputation and take walk-in clients. You can also choose to rent a chair at a salon. This may require you to set your own rates, receive tips, and pay a chair rental fee. Your income tends to increase as you gain a base of customers. Salon ownership is another route that may allow you to increase your income potential; however, it does require business skills.

License Requirements in Washington

As you complete your cosmetology training in Seattle, you'll want to make sure that you are completing the training requirements set out by the State of Washington Department of Licensing. Each career path requires a certain amount of training hours:

  • Cosmetologists: 1,600 hours
  • Barbers: 1,000 hours
  • Estheticians and nail technicians: 600 hours

Once you pass the state's practical and written exams, you receive a license that is good for two years. Be sure to renew your license every two years by your original licensure date to keep it valid.
