The Academy of Cosmetology building is located on the northeast section of the main campus of Tri-State Business Institute. The Academy of Cosmetology offers 7,000 square feet with a 24-station clinic space, adjoining classrooms, dispensary and an excellent atmosphere for the learning and practice of cosmetology. Specially constructed carousel stations provide attractive workspaces for students. The facilities are equipped with audio/visual equipment to assist instructor-led classes. The Academy of Cosmetology utilizes the Pivot Point method of cosmetology instruction.

Programs Offered
Salon Management Degree
The Academy has Pennsylvania's ONLY Associate Degree offered in the field of Cosmetology. Some areas presented will be skills-based instruction for client-therapist relations, promotional techniques, business practices and communication with clients. The skills acquired within the course will be of interest and use in the current trend of full service spa salons.

Students are instructed in the subjects pertinent to the entire field of cosmetology, including being able to manage a salon and to teach cosmetology related subjects. The Pivot Point philosophy of hair sculpture and design, color and perming, as well as nails and skin are taught throughout the program. The program strives to develop each student's communication and human relations abilities by offering courses in psychology, public speaking, and computer usage.

Cosmetology Instructor/Operator
This facet of the cosmetology industry will prepare the student for an entry-level instructional position within the field of Cosmetology. Students who wish to enter into the Instructor program must graduate from an approved program in cosmetology (or its equivalent) prior to being accepted into the Cosmetology Instructor program.

The student will be taught teaching techniques for subject matter related to cosmetology curricula. Professional Practices and Salon Management will allow the student to have a well-rounded view of the field of cosmetology instruction. Students will be exposed to teaching methods and techniques. Students will learn how to prepare lesson plans, course outlines, classroom presentation and demonstrations, and review evaluation methods. Practical experience in clinical management under direct supervision of the instructor will occur.

Students will be taught the rules and regulations of the Pennsylvania Board of Cosmetology. They will be exposed to the theory and skills of shampooing, hair and scalp treatment, hair-cutting, chemical hair restoring, and hair styling, shaping, and manicuring.

Barbering
Tri-State Business Institute now offers a state-of-the-art barbering academy and the opportunity to receive a Pennsylvania Barber license. This program includes practical and theoretical knowledge taught by licensed, experienced instructors.

Students are given hands-on experience, in addition to theory background, in areas such as

  • care of tools and implements
  • facials and scalp treatments
  • hair cutting methodology
  • honing
  • stropping and shaving techniques
  • hair coloring methodology
  • sanitation and sterilization methods
  • facials and scalp treatments
  • utilizing perms and color
  • stropping and shaving techniques

This program prepares the student to understand all phases of the Barbering profession including business practices, rules and regulations of the Pennsylvania Barber License Laws and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as well as professional business ethics. Also included is kit packing procedures, preparation for the Pennsylvania State Board Barber examination, job resumes and methods of obtaining employment in a barber Salon.

Styling specialists can also receive a DUAL license – Cosmetology AND Barbering. In as little as 18 weeks, students with cosmetology operator hours can acquire additional barber hours and training enabling them to apply for the Pennsylvania barber license.
