Cosmetology
The Niles School of Cosmetology has established a primary course that will prepare students to go out as cosmetologists or cosmetology teachers. The successful completion of this course qualifies the student to the licensing examination for Registered Cosmetologist offered through the Illinois state examination, where he/she is qualified to work as a Cosmetologist in the state of Illinois. Upon successful completion of the course you will be prepared to pursue a career in many of the following fields:
- Salon Owner
- Cosmetology School Owner
- Make-up Artist
- Industry Representative
COURSE GOALS
The Primary goals of the Niles School of Cosmetology is to provide training to individuals in preparation for the state of Illinois licensing examinations in Cosmetology & Cosmetology Instruction; and to place such individuals in the fields of Cosmetology & Cosmetology Education.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The following is a breakdown of topics of theoretical and practical instruction necessary for completing the course, as prescribed by Illinois statue. Please note that the actual sequence of instruction may vary.
- Basic Training
- Practical Chemical Application and Hair Treatment
- Hair Styling / Hair Dressing
- Shop Management, Sanitation, and Interpersonal Relations
- Esthetics
- Nail Technology
- Electives
REQUIREMENTS
Prospective students for the Cosmetology course must meet the following requirements to be admitted:
- Have completed the 8th grade (or its equivalent) or higher. To qualify for grants, must have a High School Diploma or take the A.T.B. test.
- Be at least 16 years of age upon admission.
- Foreign born students who lack documentation of such on equivalence may be enrolled as regular students, provided that they complete a statement certifying the same. -OR-
- Demonstrate the ability to benefit from the course of instruction by passing an independently administered Ability-to-Benefit examination.
Cosmetology Teacher
The course also qualifies a graduate who successfully completed the state licensing examination for further training in the field of Cosmetology Instructor. Secondary courses compromise the Teacher Training program, the successful completion of which qualifies the student to apply to take the licensing for Registered Cosmetology Instructor offered through the Illinois Department of Professional Cosmetology Instructor in the state of Illinois. If the student passes the state examination he/she is qualified to work as a Cosmetology Instructor in the state of Illinois. The course is also designed to prepare students for careers including but not limited to the following additional fields:
- Cosmetology Instructor
- Cosmetology School Owner
- Make-up Artist
- Platform Artist
- Industry Representative
- Educational Consultant

REQUIREMENTS
Prospective students for either Teacher Training course must meet the following requirements to be admitted:
- Be at least 18 years of age upon admission
- Have a U.S. High School Diploma or equivalency certificate or, possess a recognized foreign equivalent. Foreign born students who lack documentation of such equivalence may be enrolled as regular students, provided that they complete a statement certifying the same.
- Have a valid Cosmetology license.
