Michigan Skin Care & Esthetics Schools

An esthetician, also called a skin care specialist, is a licensed beauty professional who provides a variety of skin care treatments, including facials, waxing, hair removal, makeup artistry, and microdermabrasion. He or she helps clients care for the skin and provides advice on useful tips and recommended skin care products for different skin types. If this sounds like something you would be great at, consider talking to esthetics schools in Michigan about how to get started down this career path.

Michigan estheticians also train to apply artificial eyelashes and other temporary beauty enhancements. They can become part of the excitement of the beauty and fashion world while performing a service to others and improving the lives of their clients.

Earn Your Michigan Esthetician License

The Michigan Bureau of Commercial Services - Board of Cosmetology mandates 400 hours of classroom education in esthetics schools for a student to qualify for a license. Students can also participate in a highly structured unpaid apprenticeship supervised by a licensed cosmetologist. Apprenticeships consist of 120 classroom hours and 480 direct practice hours over the course of at least six months. Apprentices must take two exams during the course of their training. After training through school or apprenticeship, graduates take a written and practical skills test. Licensees must be at least 17 years old and have a 9th grade education. Esthetics schools in Michigan provide a curriculum including skin care, skin analysis, skin treatments, cosmetics application, use of skin care equipment, and salon operations skills. Schools provide hands-on training to students in clinics. Apprentices must learn the same skills under the guidance of their trainer.

Work as a Michigan Esthetician

Michigan estheticians work mainly in spas and salons, providing skin care and cosmetic services. Others work with dermatologists and plastic surgeons in clinics and hospitals, providing skincare treatments to those with skin illnesses, injuries, or even burns. The tourism industry offers additional opportunities for skin care specialists in hotels and resort spas. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the field of esthetics will grow by at least 25 percent by 2020. The Lansing metropolitan area reported the sixth-highest number of job sites and concentration of jobs for estheticians among all cities studied by the BLS. Salaries for Michigan skincare specialists average $25,280 per year before tips and bonuses. Lansing estheticians earn an annual average of $26,970 before tips.
