Skin Care & Esthetics Schools in Texas
Texas is a big state with big opportunities for estheticians, or skin care specialists, who work in spas or salons performing facials, hair removal and offering advice on skin care. There are many esthetics schools in Texas, and after training, you may find that opportunities for estheticians in Texas are as vast as the state itself, from Houston to Dallas to San Antonio to El Paos. Texas estheticians must complete training in a state-approved esthetics school. At Texas esthetics schools, training includes courses in safety and sanitation procedures, facials, wraps, extractions, waxing, and even some elements of massage or makeup application. You'll learn about various skin care products and techniques, and how to use esthetics equipment. The training includes classroom instruction and hands-on practice. Texas requires at least 750 hours of training before you can take the state esthetician licensing exam. Licenses are administered by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The written portion of the test covers sanitation practices, communication with clients, facial treatments, makeup, hair removal and salon management and other elements of esthetics and skin care theory. In the second part of the test - the practical exam - you must demonstrate skin care and makeup techniques on a live model. According to the TDLR, the test is offered in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that employment of skin care specialists will increase nationally by 25 percent from 2010 to 2020, which is faster than average for all occupations. The BLS attributes this growth to new services such as mini-facials and an increasing desire to look younger among both men and women. The BLS said a May 2011 survey showed there are currently about 2,400 skin care specialists (and counting!) working in Texas, making it the third highest employing state in the U.S. for skin care specialists. Texas estheticians earn an annual median wage of about $31,220 with plenty of growth potential through tips and career advancement.
