MAKEUP: KEEP IT OR TOSS IT?

MakeupExpirationDate

If there is one thing that we all can agree on it’s that letting go of makeup that we’ve spent our precious dollars on is not an easy task. We tend to hold on to makeup too long and way past the expiration date of the product. Some people aren’t even aware that makeup has an expiration date, but just like food, makeup will go bad over a certain period of time. If you aren’t cautious about following the expiration dates on the back label of your makeup products, then you are allowing yourself to be exposed to many dangers. Old makeup products harbor bacteria and when used can cause irritation, breakouts, eye infections, and in worst cases, some forms of staph infection.

Here are some guidelines to follow to ensure you are not exposing yourself to harm with expired makeup. First, check to see if the product’s texture has changed. If it’s clumpy or doesn’t go on smooth like it used to, then toss it. Second, if you notice the color has changed, toss it. Lastly, if the product has a bad odor, TOSS IT!

Not all products will have expiration dates listed on them. If they do have this listed, it will typically be located on the back. An open lid symbol with a number and a letter next to it will indicate the expiration date of the product. For example, if you see an open lid symbol with “6m” on it that means that the product will last for 6 months. If the product does not have an expiration date on the back label, then use the guide of below estimates for how long you should keep each product before you toss it:

Liquid Foundation – 6 months to 1 year

Concealer – 1 to 2 years

Powder Foundation – 1 to 2 years

Blush – 1 to 2 years

Brow Pencil – 1 year

Eyeshadow – 1 to 2 years

Mascara – 3 to 6 months

Eyeliner – 6 months to 1 year

Lipstick – 1 to 2 years

Lipgloss – 1 year

Lipliner – 1 year

Don’t let the products you love go to waste. You spent your hard earned dollars on that perfect lip gloss color, or the must have eyeshadow palette! You should spoil yourself and use them frequently so that you do not risk the products expiring before you got to really enjoy the new look you were able to bring to life!
