Vermont License Requirements

Vermont has strict requirements for its cosmetology professionals, and you must be ready to meet or exceed these requirements if you want to make a career in the beauty industry. If you want to become licensed as a cosmetologist or another beauty professional, you must complete the requirements listed below from the Vermont Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists.
When getting a Vermont cosmetology license or another type of beauty certification, you must attend a licensed and accredited school to earn your training hours. After you finish your training, you can proceed to the rest of the licensure process.
Once you have graduated from your cosmetology program, you are required to pass two licensing exams issued by the Vermont Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists. You’ll receive your cosmetology license once you receive passing scores on both of these tests.
With your license in hand, you can now officially start your career in the beauty industry. Currently, Vermont does not have any continuing education requirements for any beauty professionals except for cosmetology instructors. However, it is still recommended that you pursue continuing education opportunities to further your knowledge and keep your skills up-to-date.

The state of Vermont does allow apprenticeship to get your training hours for some licenses. Generally, apprenticeship hour requirements are about two times more than training requirements. Vermont administers exams through PCS and allows you to take the boards in the English language only.
Vermont Board of Cosmetology License Requirements (2017)
- COSMETOLOGIST LICENSE: 1500 Hours
- BARBER LICENSE: 1000 hours (2000 hours apprenticeship; no more than 3000 hours)
- ESTHETICIAN LICENSE: 600 hours (800 hours apprenticeship; no more than 1200 hours)
- MASTER ESTHETICIAN LICENSE: 1200 Hours
- NAIL TECHNICIAN LICENSE: 400 hours (600 hours apprenticeship; no more than 900 hours)
- ELECTROLOGIST LICENSE: 600 Hours
- COSMETOLOGY INSTRUCTOR LICENSE: Cosmetology License + 3 Years Active Work Experience + Instructor Exam
- MASSAGE THERAPIST LICENSE: Varies by Municipality
Vermont Cosmetology License Renewal
Cosmetology license renewal in Vermont happens every two years on November 30 in odd-numbered years. The cost to renew a cosmetology license is $130. The Board sends out renewal reminders in October. Vermont requires 24 cosmetology continuing education hours to renew instructor licenses. Six of these hours must be in the art of teaching, and the rest should be in your field of study. However, CEUs are always recommended to stay current in the industry.
Cosmetology License Reciprocity (Transfer) in Vermont
To be eligible for licensure by endorsement, you must pay a fee of $110 and submit a completed endorsement application to the Board. You must have evidence of your professional training submitted to the Board. It should show that you’ve completed 1000 hours for barber licensure, 1500 hours for cosmetology licensure, 400 hours for manicurist licensure, or 600 hours for esthetician licensure.
