If there's one constant in the field of cosmetology, it's change! The styles and techniques you learn in cosmetology school today may not be in high demand in the years or even months to come. Where to Find Continuing Education
Cosmetology Schools
Local Salons
Trade Shows

You may be able to complete your continuing education hours in many different settings. The cosmetology school you graduate from may offer ongoing education opportunities. Local salons often host continuing education classes, although you may need to be a salon employee to take advantage of these opportunities. In many cases, seminars and trade shows are a great way to get continuing education hours. This route allows you to learn more about new products, discover up-and-coming styling techniques, and network with other professionals in the field.

Education Details

One of the best parts of pursuing continuing education in Michigan is how versatile continuing education is. Sit down and think about what your long-term career goals are. If you want to become more business-savvy, you can take salon management or ownership courses. If you think you could afford to brush up on your styling skills, you can look for continuing education programs in styling, coloring, or cutting. There are also continuing education classes based in customer service, which may be a good choice for you if you want to improve your customers' experience.

It's clear that taking advantage of continuing education opportunities can have a profound effect on your salary and job outlook. Furthering your education can give you more skills in your arsenal, potentially giving you the chance to earn a raise or compete for higher-paying positions. In addition, you and your skills may be in higher demand if you keep up on ongoing education classes. According to O*Net, the average salary for a Michigan cosmetologist is $20,600 per year. With experience and seniority, you may be able to earn $41,200 or more per year (O*Net, 2013). Tips will likely be a significant part of your income, so you may wish to ensure that customer service is a big part of your job.

After Continuing Education

Cosmetologists in Michigan often enjoy multifaceted careers that allow them to interact with patients of all ages, backgrounds, and beauty needs. During your shifts, you may offer many different services and see new and returning clients. Depending on what you have on the books, you might offer hair services, nail care, or skin care. No matter what cosmetology services you provide, it's important to put your clients first. Based out of Winona, Adrienne Geiger has become well-known and well-respected for her excellent cuts, styles, and coloring. Customers note that she enjoys getting to know her clients and building long-lasting connections with them. Her business philosophy is one to keep in mind as you grow in your cosmetology career: "Doing hair is really about serving other people. It's always about them, not about me." Geiger came to be a successful stylist after struggling to find her ideal career and discovering her own creativity. Her story demonstrates the importance of continuing education. After getting her cosmetology license, she earned certification in advanced hair coloring and enhanced her education in other areas. Continuing education in Michigan can help you take your career wherever you want it to go. Even if you are not required to complete continuing education hours, why wouldn't you want to be the best stylist you can be?
