Continuing Education

In any career field, you have to keep up-to-date on new technologies in your field and stay current on industry expectations. However, continuing education is particularly important in the field of cosmetology! Trends and techniques change from year to year, and if you don’t master trends as they change, you can lose customers and become irrelevant.

By dedicating some of your time to continuing education every year, you can keep your skill set fresh and current.

Where to Find Continuing Education
Education Details

You may complete continuing education courses in many different subjects and specialties, depending on what your salon wishes of you and where you think you need to improve. You may work on your practical skills by learning about new hairstyling techniques, updated coloring styles and techniques, and newly-developed haircutting tools. If you’re considering becoming a manager or salon owner, you may wish to take continuing education courses that teach you about business, small business finance, or management. Safety and sanitation are always important topics for cosmetologists, so consider taking a refresher course every year.

Though continuing education is recommended in all beauty specialties, it is not required for most specialties by the Minnesota Board of Cosmetology Examiners. If you are a cosmetology instructor, you must complete 45 hours of continuing education every three years. If you are a salon owner or operator, you must take a four-hour course every year.

As a cosmetologist, you may earn a variety of salaries throughout the duration of your career. Per O*Net, the average salary for a Minnesota cosmetologist is $23,500 per year. Furthering your education may increase your earning potential, as you may be able to provide a greater range of services to your clients and increase your demand as a stylist. Job growth for cosmetologists is expected to remain fairly stable in Minnesota. Through 2022, O*Net anticipates a 6% increase in cosmetology job openings. Your job outlook may benefit from continued education, as many salons expect their cosmetologists to keep their skills relevant through courses, seminars, and training classes. In addition, building your skill set can help you seek employment in high-end salons that want stylists with a variety of skills.

After Continuing Education

Working as a hair designer in Minnesota involves working in a fast-paced setting that requires quick decision making and great customer service skills. Plan on working a variety of hours in this field, as salons are often open on weekends and during the evenings. Depending on the clients you serve, you may have to work different shifts every week to keep your appointments and take care of customers. Continuing education may allow you to expand your job duties and tasks. If you complete business courses or seminars, for example, you may take on leadership or management roles in your salon. If you learn a new skill, like ombre hair coloring, you may become known as a specialist in that technique and see more clients who are looking for that service. You may want to spend some time thinking about your long-term career goals and shaping your continuing education courses around your career goals. Salon ownership may be a major goal of yours in the cosmetology industry. Fox 6 Now tells the inspiring story of a woman who used her cosmetology skills to open her own salon. As you become more and more advanced in your cosmetology skills and your leadership abilities, business ownership may become a reality for you!
