Continuing Education
IN
Minnesota

In any career field, you have to keep up-to-date on new technologies in your field and stay current on industry expectations. However, continuing education is particularly important in the field of cosmetology! Trends and techniques change from year to year, and if you don’t master trends as they change, you can lose customers and become irrelevant.

By dedicating some of your time to continuing education every year, you can keep your skill set fresh and current.

Education Details

You may complete continuing education courses in many different subjects and specialties, depending on what your salon wishes of you and where you think you need to improve. You may work on your practical skills by learning about new hairstyling techniques, updated coloring styles and techniques, and newly-developed haircutting tools. If you’re considering becoming a manager or salon owner, you may wish to take continuing education courses that teach you about business, small business finance, or management. Safety and sanitation are always important topics for cosmetologists, so consider taking a refresher course every year.

After Continuing Education

Working as a hair designer in Minnesota involves working in a fast-paced setting that requires quick decision making and great customer service skills. Plan on working a variety of hours in this field, as salons are often open on weekends and during the evenings. Depending on the clients you serve, you may have to work different shifts every week to keep your appointments and take care of customers. Continuing education may allow you to expand your job duties and tasks. If you complete business courses or seminars, for example, you may take on leadership or management roles in your salon. If you learn a new skill, like ombre hair coloring, you may become known as a specialist in that technique and see more clients who are looking for that service. You may want to spend some time thinking about your long-term career goals and shaping your continuing education courses around your career goals. Salon ownership may be a major goal of yours in the cosmetology industry. Fox 6 Now tells the inspiring story of a woman who used her cosmetology skills to open her own salon. As you become more and more advanced in your cosmetology skills and your leadership abilities, business ownership may become a reality for you!
