Education Details

Before you can get into the fun part of your education, you have to develop a strong knowledge of infection prevention, safety, hygiene, and sanitation. You can learn about sanitation laws in Ohio and how to follow these standards every day. Another important part of hair safety is knowing about the chemicals that go into the products you use. Your instructors will likely have you work with many types of products, from shampoo and conditioner to hair dye and relaxing chemicals. You may discover which chemicals and ingredients make up each product, helping you avoid allergic or chemical reactions in clients. As a prospective hair dresser, you're probably most excited to learn about the different techniques and tools used in hair styling! During theory and practical lessons, you may learn how to use combs, razors, scissors, and other tools to create the hair style your client wants. In addition to styling, clients can come to you for coloring, perms, and other chemical procedures. You can plan on getting lots of hands-on experience in all of these procedures, both on mannequin heads and real clients.

Average yearly salary for hair design in Ohio

Ohio is one of the few states that allows hopeful hair designers to earn a license specifically designed for hair styling. The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology requires hair stylists to complete 1,500 hours of hair care education before earning their license. After earning your hair styling license, you may be rewarded with an excellent salary range. The average salary in this industry is $30,040 per year (O*Net, 2020). You may earn more as you build a reputation and gain valuable experience.

Hair design is often considered a field with unlimited possibilities. You can work with all clients that come to you or you can begin specializing in one type of hair. You may see lots of clients on evenings and weekends, especially if you become well-known for doing hair for special events. Developing a reputation for updos and formal hair can mean big business during homecoming, prom, and wedding season. Technical knowledge may well be the most important part of your career. Being personable and likable is important, but knowing how to create impeccable hairstyles is the most crucial part of this field. As a result, you may spend your free time or time between clients learning about new styles and practicing them on mannequin heads. Some people who go into hair styling go on to become salon owners, a career path that may lead to financial freedom. Minuteman reports on three cosmetology school graduates that went on to open their own successful salons. Whether you want to work as a stylist long-term or eventually become a salon owner, marketing your skills and giving clients what they want can lead you to a rewarding and promising cosmetology career.
