State License Requirements
N/A

It is most useful for spa and salon managers to possess and maintain a license in a beauty specialty, such as hair styling, hair dressing, cosmetology, or barbering, and most managers do possess a license. Having a license gives them the ability to understand the experiences of their professional staff. It also enables them to step in and provide direct client services if a particular staff member is absent, so it gives them greater flexibility. The Kentucky Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists issues these licenses, which need to be renewed yearly.

Education Details

You can study spa and salon management in a special program run by most beauty schools. These programs tend to last between six and twelve months, and earn you between 15 and 30 credits. The focus of these programs is on the business skills you will need to run a successful spa or salon. You’ll learn business finance, payroll, hiring and managing staff, advertising and marketing, motivating staff, qualities of a successful leader, and local laws and regulations pertaining to the beauty industry and to running a small business in Kentucky.

Working as a Salon Manager

What is great about working in spa or salon management is how varied the responsibilities are and hence, the workday. During a typical day, you will spend time in your office attending to finance issues, hiring and managing staff, planning marketing and advertising campaigns, ordering supplies, and other management tasks. Out on the floor, you may answer phones and make appointments, oversee that things are running smoothly, that staff is being productive and efficient, that sterilization and sanitation regulations are being followed, and that clients are happy. You may need to fill in for an absent staff member on occasion. All of this makes for a long work day where you are on your feet much of the time, so you should have good energy, stamina, and health. If there is a problem or issue, people will come to you. In short, you have a lot of responsibility, and with responsibility comes greater reward.
