Hair Licensing in Florida

Florida doesn't require hair school and hairdressing licensure; you need to get a cosmetology license to practice. A cosmetology license in the state takes 1,200 hours to earn. Coursework primarily focuses on hair services, though testing also covers makeup, nails, skincare, laws, and sanitation.

The only hair treatments you can do without a license are braiding and wrapping. However, to be successful in those fields, you should have a good amount of informal training through a family member or friend.

How Much Florida Hairstylists Earn

As of 2022, hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists in Florida earn $35,040 per year. The exact amount you can make depends on your experience, the place you live, the type of salon or space you work in, and more. This number doesn't include self-employed hairdressers, so if that's what you want to do, be sure to talk with people who work in that capacity to learn more about pay.
