I decided to try South Hills Beauty Academy for a root touch-up and pedicure. The root touch-up went well, though it did take almost 3 hours total. However, I got an infection on my big toe two days after the pedicure that required an urgent care visit and prescription antibiotic ointment. The student who was doing it used a wooden cuticle pusher tool to push down my cuticles. The tool was covered in nail polish and had obviously been used. I was grossed out by it in the moment, but I didn’t say anything (in hindsight, I should have). There is no way to effectively sanitize wooden tools, and I feel like it had been used on multiple people. Additionally, at least two of the four pedicure chairs didn’t work (one didn’t have any water at all, and the one I was in didn’t have working jets). The student doing my pedicure was talking to another student next to me about other things throughout the salon that weren’t working either. I was really hoping to have a good experience here, but I do not plan on returning.

I went to get my hair done and it smelled like something had died inside. It made me physically ill, so I turned around and left. I called to let the owner know that it was not a safe or pleasant environment for anyone to be in and that I couldn't believe they were open. I spoke to a student who attends this academy and she informed me that this has been going on all week and that students are getting sick. When I called I was told by the owner April that they "couldn't find the source of the smell," but students decided to open the ceiling themselves and found the source. April fully dismissed my concerns with an "Okay, well, thank you for your opinion" and is threatening to take away hours from students who are physically ill and cannot work in the clinic. Students tried to stand outside and were told they would be clocked out if they didn't go back inside. The owners do not care about their employees, students, or clients and not only lied about not knowing the source but have also shown an egregious level of unprofessional behavior.
