⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I highly recommend P&A Scholars, and especially Kiara! My mother has dementia, so patience, kindness, and a gentle touch are extremely important when it comes to her hair. Kiara exceeded my expectations. My mom had locks that had been in for quite some time, and after they were removed, her hair had some significant tangling and matting. Kiara was incredibly patient and thorough. She used detangling spray and carefully worked through her hair from the bottom up, taking her time to preserve my mother’s hair and avoid unnecessary breakage. I was so impressed with the care she took. My mother normally does not like people touching her hair and will quickly let you know if someone is being too rough or hurting her. She never complained once with Kiara. Because of her dementia, she also gets bored and restless and will repeatedly get up, but Kiara remained patient, pleasant, and understanding the entire time. She kept a smile on her face and never made my mother—or me—feel like we were inconveniencing her. She also made great recommendations and even helped me figure out exactly what hair to purchase. After taking down the locks, my mom became too tired to continue, so we scheduled another appointment three days later. Kiara washed and conditioned her hair and put it into a neat bun so she would be comfortable until we returned. What really touched me was that when we came back, my mom was happy to see Kiara again and comfortably allowed her to finish her hair. That says a LOT for my mother. Kiara gave her beautiful goddess braids, and they turned out absolutely gorgeous! My mother loves them, and everyone who has seen her hair loves them too. I understand Kiara will be graduating soon, and I will genuinely be sad to see her go. It is not easy to find a stylist who is skilled and has the patience, compassion, and temperament to work with someone living with dementia. Kiara has all of those qualities, and her pleasant spirit made the entire experience even better. I absolutely recommend P&A Scholars, and if you have the opportunity to book with Kiara, do it. She took wonderful care of my mom, and that means more to me than she probably realizes. ❤️

My experience at P&A Scholars was extremely disappointing and unprofessional. I truly believe it’s an injustice to the students who enroll in this program, especially the senior students who depend on working with models to earn the hours they need for the state board. Before driving to Detroit, I called to ask about pricing and whether there was any availability , as I’m a single mother. I also wanted to support the students by allowing them to perform my services. When I arrived around 10:30 a.m., things immediately started going downhill. First, the price I was quoted changed once I got there. Although I wasn’t happy about it, I agreed to pay the higher amount. Then, the card reader wasn’t working, and an employee took my debit card away for about 15 minutes. No customer should ever have their card taken out of their sight for that long. The service itself was incredibly disorganized. It took about 30 minutes just to blow-dry my hair and nearly 30 more minutes to wash it. I didn’t even finish my wash and blowout until around 1:30 p.m. After that, the student working on my hair had to search for someone to continue the service while staff members were walking around celebrating a birthday. I understand this is a cosmetology school, and students are there to learn. However, the school is responsible for setting the standard of professionalism, organization, and proper instruction. If instructors aren’t actively teaching, correcting, and guiding students during clinic hours, they’re doing both the students and future clients a disservice. The beauty industry depends on schools producing skilled, professional stylists, and that starts with leadership. What’s most disappointing is that this school has been a part of the Detroit community for many years and has graduated countless talented cosmetologists, estheticians, and beauty professionals. With that kind of legacy and reputation, I expected a much higher level of professionalism, organization, and leadership. The students deserve an environment that prepares them for success, and clients deserve to feel that their time and trust are respected. I came in hoping to support the students while receiving a service, but I left feeling like my time wasn’t valued. I sincerely hope the school takes steps to improve its organization, professionalism, and student supervision.
