DO NOT GO TO THIS SCHOOL IF YOU HAVE TEXTURED HAIR!!
This was our first time working with these people, so we came in with an open mind and understood that they are students who are still learning. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing.
We arrived on time for my boyfriend’s appointment, and Denise started working on his 3C textured hair. At first, everything seemed fine. I understood that sectioning could take some time because his hair is thick, but once she started braiding, she struggled almost immediately. The first braid had to be taken out and redone, and the second braid also had to be taken out. We had already been there around two hours with very little progress.
Denise also spent a lot of time talking about her personal life and business instead of focusing on his hair. I can’t say this caused the issues, but it felt distracting and unprofessional.
Denise then went on lunch, and Emma and Kaelyn took over. They seemed to be trying, but they also struggled with the sectioning. I even have a video showing one of them giving up before another student had to take over. The sections were uneven and wavy, and once they started braiding, the braids looked very puffy.
I also had an issue with how the guest policy was handled. I had gone over to my boyfriend several times to check on him, bring him food, and ask if he was okay, and nobody said anything about guests not being allowed in that area. However, when I was speaking to him in Spanish and telling him that if he wasn’t comfortable, we could leave, a blonde employee with a headband suddenly told me that guests weren’t allowed back there. This was confusing because earlier Denise had even asked my boyfriend, “Why didn’t your girlfriend just stay and sit next to you?” I understand having policies, but they should be communicated from the beginning.
I also became visibly frustrated after hours of very little progress. I noticed some employees looking at me and appearing to snicker or laugh. I understand my frustration was noticeable, but I believe it was reasonable given the circumstances.
The policy said there was a minimum amount of time we had to stay and that we couldn’t leave until the service was finished. After already being there for hours with little progress, this felt unreasonable, especially since he wasn’t receiving a chemical service.
The biggest issue was that the students seemed unprepared to work with his 3C textured hair. If they weren’t comfortable working with his hair type, we should have been told upfront instead of wasting five hours. He was still charged the full $45.
There also didn’t appear to be a teacher actively supervising. I understand students make mistakes, but there should be someone available to step in when they are struggling, especially with different hair textures.
The gel used also seemed unsuitable for his hair. It was very watery and didn’t provide the hold needed for clean, secure braids.
We understand this is a cosmetology school and that students are learning. We were never expecting perfection. However, we expected better communication, supervision, and honesty about whether they could properly work with his hair type. I hope the school takes this feedback seriously and improves its training and customer service.
