Education Details

A big part of succeeding in this field is understanding how permanent makeup in Alabama works. Unlike typical makeup, which is deposited on the skin, permanent makeup uses tattoo needles that deposit pigment just below the skin. This information can help you when you begin using tattoo needles. You can plan on spending lots of time getting practical experience with permanent makeup needles, since clients will expect you to have perfect technique when you start your career. Color theory is likely going to a significant part of your training. Choosing permanent makeup colors is different from choosing regular makeup colors, since your selections must be appropriate for different settings and seasons. Your color training may cover the differences between permanent makeup pigment and regular makeup choices, selecting pigments for different clients, and choosing colors to keep on hand. It's always important to keep your work area clean, particularly when you're using needles that could spread infection or disease. Through interactive modules and classroom lessons, you can learn about proper sanitation and hygiene in permanent makeup.

Job Outlook Increase
Between 2012 - 2022

The overall job outlook in Alabama is positive for cosmetology professionals, including permanent makeup artists! Between 2012 and 2022, O*Net expects a 13% increase in job openings for cosmetology professionals. The job outlook may be better for permanent makeup artists in major cities, since people tend to head to these areas for major procedures. Although salaries differ significantly from person to person, O*Net notes that the average salary for a cosmetology worker is $21,000 per year. If you become well-known for a certain procedure or if your skills are in high demand, you may be able to command a higher salary. The highest-paid cosmetology professionals in Alabama earn $37,100 per year or more (O*Net, 2013). Although permanent makeup is a beauty profession, it is not regulated by the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. Permanent makeup artists are not required to complete any specific amount of training. However, their work and sanitation must be up to the standards laid out by the Alabama Department of Public Health.

Working as a Permanent Makeup Artist

Once you go through the intensive training that you may need to become a good permanent makeup artist, you can look forward and start building your client base! As a permanent makeup artist, you may have a wide and varied client base. Some people go to permanent makeup artists for medical reasons; they may have disabilities or conditions that make it difficult to apply makeup or that have diminished part of their appearance. In addition, you may see clients that want the convenience of permanent makeup. Since some of your cases may be cosmetic and some may be medical, it's important to begin building connections in both industries. If you treat a doctor's patients well, they may send more clients your way! If you network with local cosmetologists or hair designers, your name may come up if customers ask about permanent makeup. Keeping your skills fresh is a crucial part of permanent makeup. Diane Rohe, a local successful permanent makeup artist, is a perfect example of this. She furthers her career with advanced classes, beauty expos, and certification courses. Investing in your future with education not only makes you a better permanent makeup artist, it shows your clients that you care about their experience.
