Permanent Make-Up

The cosmetics industry is a growing industry, with new products and services offered every month. Along with the expanded offering, prices of cosmetics products increase steadily as well. Plus, the careful application of makeup, requiring a steady hand and just the right touch, can take up considerable time in the morning, when you are getting ready to go to work, or in the evening, when you are getting ready to go out for dinner and/or entertainment.

It is no wonder that the field of permanent makeup, in which specially trained and skilled permanent makeup artists apply pigments that form a permanent eyeliner, eyebrow, lipliner, and others, are gaining in popularity. If you have an artistic and creative talent, wish to help people look and feel their best, and you would love to work in the fast-growing beauty field, becoming a permanent makeup artist in the state of Delaware may be a great career option for you!

State License Requirements

Delaware does not currently license body art operators, which includes tattoo artists and permanent makeup artists. Rather, it licenses body art establishments. You may complete your training at a permanent makeup program or through an experienced permanent makeup artist. You must only perform these procedures in licensed establishments, use disposable gloves at all times, and comply with universal precautions.

Permanent makeup application, also known as tattooing, micropigmentation, and dermapigmentation, is typically taught in schools of cosmetology as a specialized skill. They can take anywhere from a few days, to a few weeks, to a few months, or even longer, depending upon whether you want to apprentice under the supervision of an experienced permanent makeup artist or take specialized courses, such as those in cosmetic restoration after injury or illness. Courses will teach you about the anatomy and physiology of skin, and about the pigments you will use to cause permanent cosmetic changes to the skin. You will also learn about the specialized needles used to apply permanent makeup. You will learn application techniques, color selection, and how to use the different pigments and needles. If you are thinking about going into cosmetic restoration, you will also learn about scar camouflage, tattoo removal, aereola restoration, and cleft lip correction. Individuals who practice permanent makeup in Delaware need to be licensed by the Delaware Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. In cosmetology, 1500 hours of training are required in preparation for the license. There are also a number of professional associations to which permanent makeup artists may belong, and which offer their own certification. Professionals wishing to demonstrate that they have achieved a level of proficiency that is higher than required by the state, attracting and assuring clientele, or achieving a promotion or raise at work, may wish to apply for such certification. Cosmetologists practicing in the state of Delaware earned an average of $29,800 in 2013, which is considerably higher than the average across the United States, which was $23,100, according to statistics reported by O*Net. Practitioners of permanent makeup have a subspecialty within cosmetology that may allow them to command a higher fee for their services. The field of cosmetology is expected to grow between 8% and 14% between 2012 and 2022, making this a field with a good outlook for new graduates seeking their first jobs.

Working as a Permanent Makeup Artist

The cosmetics industry is growing, and the demand for an alternative to the daily application of expensive cosmetics products is growing as well. Most permanent makeup artists work in beauty salons and spas, where they work in a quiet, secluded area that allows them to concentrate, and helps their clients feel relaxed and comfortable. If you decide to go into the cosmetic restoration area, you may work in doctors’ offices, medical clinics, and perhaps even hospital settings. Again, permanent makeup is a skill that is applied in a private and quiet setting wherever it is performed. Because the majority of your work will be with individual clients, you will have a great deal of flexibility in creating your schedule, although it is highly likely that you will need to work some evening and weekend hours to accommodate the schedules of your clients. It is possible to work either full or part time in this growing field, and to arrange your schedule around your other commitments, such as taking care of a young family. If you wish to make an important difference in people’s lives, the specialization area of cosmetic restoration may appeal to you. You will get to help people look and feel their best after surgery and illness that may cause disfiguration, or those born with a congenital defect that diminishes their self-esteem and self-confidence. As a permanent makeup artist, you can make a real and an important difference in people’s lives, making this career a rewarding choice.
