Before you consider different schools, you must decide which type of fashion degree fits your career goals and plans. A Bachelor’s degree in fashion helps you establish the knowledge and skills that are needed for an entry-level career in design, while a two-year Associate's degree may help you decide if fashion is the right industry for you.

Education Details

Whether you choose an Associate’s degree or a Bachelor's degree, you will likely split your educational time between fashion courses and general education courses. In the fashion program, some of your classes take place in a traditional classroom setting. However, others take you into the workforce, into the art studio, or to the nearest sewing machine.

With that in mind, keep reading to learn more about courses that are commonly part of fashion design programs:

If you work hard in school, your degree should lay a solid foundation for the development of your career. A significant part of fashion relies on who you know and how much experience you have. Building strong relationships with designers and business owners can help you learn about employment opportunities before they become publicly available. Doing well at an internship is good for your professional network, but it also puts your fashion knowledge to work in a real-life setting. Your job outlook and earning potential depend a lot on where you live in Oklahoma, what type of fashion work you want to do, and how successful you are at becoming part of this community. Job openings are not expected to change significantly through 2022, and the average salary for a fashion designer is $64,000 per year (O*Net, 2016).

Working as a Fashion Designer

Making the time to attend networking events and stay in the loop regarding the fashion community can help you make the most of your career options. Every year, Oklahoma Fashion Week showcases the best work of up-and-coming Oklahoma designers. You can also make your mark in groups like the Oklahoma Fashion and Beauty Association. You may find your perfect career by becoming a fashion designer. If you are interested in being active in every part of the fashion design process, from conception to marketing, you likely have the passion and tenacity needed to thrive in the world of design. Working in this industry gives you new challenges, ideas, and tasks on a daily basis, keeping you engaged and active.
