Laser Training

Laser hair removal is an in-demand beauty service throughout the country, with more people realizing every day that waxing and shaving are huge hassles. By learning how to use a laser safely and appropriately, you can build valuable career skills that may help you create a great career for yourself.

Safety is a major concern when working with lasers, which is why proper training is so important. A good training program should help you understand the theory of laser hair removal and give you many chances to get hands-on practice.

State License Requirements

In some states, laser hair removal falls into the field of medical legislation, but in Iowa, it is part of cosmetology. Per the Iowa Board of Medicine, you can become a licensed laser technician if you are an esthetician, cosmetologist, or electrologist. You get your certification by completing a state-approved program at one of Iowa’s laser training schools.

Education Details

Only approved Iowa laser training programs can help you get licensed.

The state of Iowa requires you to cover the following topics in your education:

  • Anatomy, physiology, and pathology
  • Basic physics, including wavelength and chromophore
  • Safety issues
  • Sedation and anesthesia
  • Possible complications
  • How to evaluate conditions and determine if laser use is appropriate

On top of spending lots of time learning about the theory of laser hair removal, you should spend plenty of time working with lasers. During your hands-on experience, you should learn about proper use and storage of lasers, how to perform hair removal on different areas of the body, how to adjust your technique based on skin texture and sensitivity, and how to handle complications.

Job Outlook Increase
Between 2012 - 2022

In Iowa, you can work as a laser technician anywhere that estheticians, electrologists, and cosmetologists are employed. You may find that the greatest variety of options are found in salons and spas. However, some medical clinics do offer laser hair removal, particularly clinics that work with patients who suffer from excessive hair growth. When it comes to working as a laser tech in IA, there are many paths to consider. In Iowa, the need for skin care specialists is extremely high. Through the year 2022, job openings for skin care specialists are expected to swell 41% (O*Net, 2016). The average salary for a specialist in this field is $26,000 per year (O*Net, 2016).

Working as a Laser Technician

A hair removal and skincare technician can independently travel from home to home offering personal care. Another option for the entrepreneurial technician is to open and manage a salon. For technicians seeking traditional employment, both salons and medical facilities employ hair removal and skincare technicians. No matter the direction a technician chooses to take, the job options are plentiful. Job growth numbers bode well for the job outlook of Iowa hair removal and skin care technicians.
