MAKEUP - WISCONSIN

Make-Up Artist Training
IN
Wisconsin

One of the most popular fields in the cosmetology industry is makeup artistry.

Makeup has always fascinated women across the world, but the colors and types of makeup available today far exceed anything that has ever been available before. What does this mean for you?

State License Requirements
N/A

In Wisconsin, you can either pursue cosmetology or esthetician training to become a makeup artist in this state. Since you can’t earn a makeup artist license in the state, those two programs can prepare you to become a practitioner. We would suggest taking an esthetician program if you aren’t interested in offering hair or nail services to clients.

Education Details

Color theory is a major part of most makeup artist training programs. Color theory shows you what colors work well together, how to choose colors based on the seasons, and how to select makeup colors that suit a person's natural coloring. You may use this knowledge in the practical experience portion of your education, since your training often requires you to work with a variety of clients to demonstrate your skills.

License Renewal
Hours required vary by licensure

Once you obtain your license, you will need to renew in March of odd-numbered years, for $82.

Careers

Job Outlook Increase
Between 2012 - 2022

If you decide to start your career in Wisconsin, you may be rewarded with a fairly solid job outlook. According to O*Net, job openings for beauty professionals are expected to swell by 8% by the year 2022. You may also be able to earn a lucrative salary by working hard and making a name for yourself. The average salary for a beauty specialist in Wisconsin is $22,800 per year (O*Net, 2014).

Working as a Makeup Artist

You must decide how and where you want to use your skills once you complete your education. If you want to become self-employed, you may open your own studio or travel to clients’ homes to do their makeup. If you want to earn commissions, you may decide to work for a department store or makeup store. Some salons and spas in Wisconsin also hire makeup artists. Throughout your work day, you may spend most of your time on your feet. While some appointments may be quick, especially if clients just want a touchup, others may take over an hour. At certain points of the year, you may mostly work on special occasions and events, like weddings and dances.
